Broadway embraced Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, the tragic story of a hideously deformed madman creating mayhem in an opera house where he lived the life of a recluse. It was less enamored with Sunset Boulevard, the tragic story of an aging silent movie queen creating mayhem in a Hollywood mansion where she lived the life of a recluse. The Phantom wrote a discordant opera and demanded that it be performed, using fear and intimidation as his trump cards. Faded silent movie queen Norma Desmond wrote a silent filmscript, Salome, and demanded that young screenwriter Joe Gillis help..
