Never underestimate the regenerative powers of Metallica. Following the stripped-down Load and Re-Load, they've returned to the raw, vitriolic savagery of their earlier canon, using 1984's Ride the Lightning as a template for St. Anger. The title track provides the psychic lynchpin of the album by combining the bombast and defiance of the band's earliest high-water marks with more deliberate lyrics and emotional nakedness. Equally cathartic is "Some Kind of Monster," a lumbering beast of a song that declares, "This is the voice of silence no more." Despite that claim, there's an economy to these lyrics; James Hetfield's raw-toothed growl only occasionally punctuates the menacing soundscapes. In fact, "Dirty Windows," the standout track here, is a shimmering five-minute instrumental that's free of the baroque trappings that sometimes clutter the Metallica landscape.

Metallica's ST ANGER: Introducing the Biggest Pile of Donkey Spunk of 2003

Pros:
the aggression is back

Cons:
that's about it folks

It's been a busy few years for California metal gods Metallica. Let's see: taking on Napster and your fans, a stint in rehab for your vocalist/guitarist (James Hetfield), a near breakup, a live album with a full orchestra, losing a longtime bassist, and honored as the third MTV Icons. That's enough to keep any band busy, nevermind one who is thought of as highly as Metallica. So today came the early release of their 8th proper studio album, St. Anger. Supposedly, this was going to be the album that moved the band back toward their aggressive, head-banging roots, and away from the more melodic.

Pros:
Flashes of brilliance, more aggressive and generally heavier. Frantic

Cons:
Terrible production values, heavier doesn't always mean better, poor lyricism, pointless passages

I ve decided to go out on a limb today and review the latest album by Metallica, underground thrash metal Gods. It s not likely that you ve heard of these guys because, well, they aren t very well known. In metal circles, they re revered, but the general population really hasn t been exposed to these guys. Oh, wait It s 2003. Never mind. Let s try that one again. Everyone and their mom have an opinion on Metallica. They say you should start a review by citing a fact. This, I know to be true. Every single person I ve encountered in the last five years (at least, those I ve had music-related...

Words fail to express how bad this record is, but I try anyway

Pros:
Supposedly, members of Metallica were involved in the recording of this record

Cons:
It absolutely blows and should be avoided at all costs

Metallica is subjected to a lot of unfair criticism. After making four of the finest thrashy metal albums of the '80s and '90s, everyone seemed to want to jump on the bandwagon to criticize works like Metallica, Load and ReLoad. But the black album and Load were honestly interesting stretches for the band, with a lot of lingering energy and only a few bombs. The criticism of ReLoad was more or less deserved; it was an album full of mediocre leftover tracks that just didn't have a lot of replay value. But nothing can compare to Metallica's return to the studio six years later, also known as St.

Saint Anger needs some Anger Management.

Pros:
The Hetfield Growl and Riffs, Lars' double bass attack.

Cons:
Lame and rehashed (!!!) lyrics; Almost all of the songs run way too long.

It is with a heavy heart that I must write this review. Metallica, one of my all-time favorite metal acts, has put out the worst CD of their career. But before I get into the CD itself, let me at least give a brief discography/history of the band (for those four of you out there who don't know.) Metallica was formed in 1981 by James Hetfield (vocals, rhythm guitar) and Lars Ulrich (drums). Their original lead guitarist was Megadeth's Dave Mustaine. By the time they released their first album, Kill 'Em All, the lineup was completed with the addition of Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) and Cliff...

Hey, Some of My Best Friends Are Metalheads: St. Anger

Pros:
Dense, hard-driven tracks

Cons:
Doesn't always work; many songs go on too long

Okay, so I'm not really a big metal fan. I tend to gravitate more toward punk and hip-hop albums, with a bit of industrial thrown into the mix. However, like a large number of people in their 20's, I own a number of Metallica albums, and like many of these same people, I was more than a bit disappointed by the band's previous two albums. Metallica apparently heard the negative comments and the accusations of "selling out", and it seems they're a bit angry. So much so, the entire theme of their new album, St. Anger, is about anger. In spite of being a decidedly more heavy and dense sound than..
