It s hard for me to believe that it s been twenty years since the release of the movie Splash - the film that launched Disney s Touchstone Films division. I can distinctly remember the buzz about the film when it was released. A young boy falls into the sea and has an encounter with a mermaid. This encounter goes with him all of the days of his life and affects him as the only time where he felt peace within himself. This sets ups a cute and precious love story that would be really one for the "books", except that the story itself becomes filled with sexual references in valuation with love instead of love on its own merits. Do mermaids exist? After watching Splash, I sure hope so. This great little gem of the 80's brought mermaids into the mainstream. Now, it is by no means good. Tom Hanks evidently wasn't much of an actor back then. Darryl Hannah? I don't think so. Not only is she a terrible actress, but, and I know this is going to be disputed by many, I find her to be totally unacttractive. John Candy is THE 80s actor and was by far the best one in the cast.
