Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron is a charming eco-friendly anti-colonisation animated tale of the Wild West that wears its heart firmly on its sleeve. From the same studio that brought us Shrek, this is an animation the delights and disappoints in equal measure. Firstly, the storyline. This is pretty basic from-slave-to-freedom stuff, with a standard love interest and some nice period detail. I am beginning to wonder what s up with American Audiences. Have we become such drones that we can t appreciate the wonder of our world, and GET the message of this beautiful little film? Not one of those movies that had 40 million behind the Advertising campaign, this is nevertheless, in my opinion, the best animated feature to be made in America last year. Don t get me wrong. I liked TREASURE PLANET, despite its flaws. I loved THE ICE AGE , haven t seen LILO AND STITCH -and I still think Miyazaki s film SPIRITED AWAY earned the Oscar. They must have a lot of white guys working over at Dreamworks (-: Now, I don t have a problem with white guys. My two boys would fall under that category for the most part, but I sure hope my boys would have a bigger view of the world than what was portrayed in Stallion of the Cimarron. A while back, a friend sent me a link to a YouTube video in which someone had set clips of the Dreamworks movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron to the tune of John Denver s Eagles and Horses. The glorious animation of a horse joyously racing an eagle fit perfectly with Denver s stirring ode to freedom, and the video reminded me how much I wanted to see the 2002 film. Spirit finally arrived last week, and I remain impressed by the gorgeous artwork, especially the vast expanses of untouched landscapes of the Old West. My fianc e said to me I always cry during Disney movies . Well guess what I told her, this is not a Disney movie! And yet better I tell you, is that it has the same charm and same emotional attachment that the great Disney movies had but this is a Dreamworks presentation.
