I really enjoyed this movie even thought it is science fiction. the cast that was used was extremely excellent and performed quite well. any movie that includes queen latifah, samuel l. jackson, dustin hoffman and sharon stone can only be great in all aspects. i would definitely recommend this movie for all to watch and learn about how things can be different under unusal circumstances and situations. the underwater scenes were shot to the extreme. excellent movie and get cast.

  Great Movie with metaphysical overtones

I liked the mood and the characters were instantly recognizable. I didn't have to struggle to find the actors places. Dustin Haufman was at his best. The only thing I didn't like was that they didn't show enough of the inside of the spaceship or inside the sphere.

Pros:
very good movie, will keep many people enthralled, believable

Cons:
none really

A little background This movie is directed by Barry Levinson and came out in 1998. There are some very great actors in this movie, Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L Jackson. The movie is based upon a novel written by Michael Crichton, and it is classified as a Sci-fi/thriller. I was not really prepared for this movie when I watched it. To be honest, I knew nothing about it. (That's in part because the movie was two years old, and I couldn't recall the movie trailers that came out to advertise the movie back then.) The basic premise of the movie: A spaceship has been found 1000 feet...

Pros:
Great story, followed the book it was based on,good acting, lots of tension and action, etc.

Cons:
None.

Deep beneath the ocean, a secret awaits discovery. A three hundred year old spaceship has been lodged in the shifting sand of the ocean floor, hidden by the murky depths of the ocean as generations have come and gone in the world above. For many long years, its sterile passageways have remained abandoned, its occupants dead, its shocking secrets safely hidden from the prying eyes of the world above, until now. US officials have discovered the spaceship and in an attempt to understand its myriad mysteries have sent a team of scientists and their group psychiatrist to live 1,000 feet beneath...

Sphere: Sci-fi flick that's got some depth

Pros:
Cerebral story and plot makes it intriguingly different.

Cons:
Some sci-fi cliches, would have liked a little more action.

With an actor the caliber of Dustin Hoffman, you know you're going to enter a whole new sphere of sci-fi flick. And in Sphere, you do. This is not a typical monster/aliens sci-fi. It follows the formula so far as it has moments of suspense, other-worldly content, and technical gadgetry. Where Sphere is different is in it's story. There is a mystery, and relationship issues, and a force that communicates through a computer terminal. Well, ok, that sounds like many other films, but it is the way it is written, and the setting it's in, that makes a difference (not to mention the presence of...

  Normally don't watch sci-fi flicks

Pros:
Believable characters--three dimensional

Cons:
Dark images at times made it difficult to tell what was going on.

I am not a sci-fi fan per se, but anything starring Dustin Hoffman captures my attention. And so for this reason I viewed this movie from start to finish. Hoffman adds something to the story, a certain dimension. The plot is pretty much formulaic, and predictable. Without going into much detail we have earthlings, who actually never leave the earth but are at the bottom of the ocean, encountering an alien. Why do aliens always have to be the bad guy? Unlike Close Encounters of the Third Kind which I actually enjoyed from start to finish, and left me with a upbeat feeling. The plot in Sphere...

Pros:
Tries to invoke fear.

Cons:
Can't scare anyone with high math and logic.

Sphere is one of those movies I hate to review more than I hate to watch. On one hand, you have the numerous good aspects of the film (top notch cast, etc.). On the other hand, you have a plot that can't be passed off in the world of celluloid. Based on the novel by Michael Crichton, Sphere concerns a team called the ULF team (Unknown Life Form). These people, hand picked by Norman Johnson (Dustin Hoffman) during the cold war, are a team designed to make contact with alien life. On it are a mathematician (Samuel L. Jackson), an astrophysicist (Liev Schrieber), a biologist (Sharon Stone),...
