Spawn (1997, DVD)

There had to have been some kind of icy silence that overcame the screening room of New Line, after the executives got a sneak preview at the final cut. I can imagine that there was a real unease in how they would market this to audiences, on a concept that was like a square peg trying to fit in a round hole. Suffice to say, a movie like Spawn, or more importantly, a character like Spawn is definitely not audience friendly. It's really not the kind of character that you can market across happy meals and cuddly stuffed animals. I don't think parents would find the idea enticing of their little.

Let me start by stating that anyone who is not familiar with the comic book aspect of this character would not understand the story what so ever. The movie is definitely not for children and has a very grim and dark story line. However the movie also had both pros and cons depending on the palette of those viewing it.
