You can forget what a legit Broadway musical is supposed to sound like these days. Well, if you want to know how the classic shows were done, pick up this cd. It's the original and has all the vitatality that a newborn show is supposed to have. Please remember that Richard Rodgers was a perfectionist about his music. He would not allow any fooling around with his creations. The point is this cd present "SouthPacific" how it is supposed to be done. The cast is simply peerless. Please enjoy.
I was excited to find this on CD! I grew up listening to this music on vinyl. I have a worn out copy and a "new" copy I was afraid to play. Now I can play it whenever I want! Some CD's remastered don't sound good at all. That is not the case here - it is terrific.

South Pacific (1949 Broadway Cast)

Pros: Beautiful melodies, social commentary, Mary Martin
Cons: Operatic in some places
By the time Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II wrote South Pacific, the pair was already legendary for the near perfection of their musicals. Their combination of genius and ambition allowed them to create shows that were unparalleled in their time for their mix of innovative and skillful music, intelligent drama, warm social commentary, and popular entertainment. I don't think South Pacific is in the league of Carousel and King and I, but that's as much a matter of personal preference as it is of inherent quality. By any standard, this is one of the greatest American musicals. The Show.
