Sony PlayStation 2 Slim - Thumbs Up

The Sony PlayStation 2 Slim (PStwo) is an excellent video game system (and DVD player) for your money. I've had one since it first came out about a year ago and I've been very pleased with it. It is the 2004 version of the original PlayStation 2 released in 2000, but it is much more compact and adds built-in online capability. Here is a more thorough list of the pros and cons:
Pros:
1. Has a huge selection of games for all ages and genres
2. Plays both DVDs and CDs (and you can purchase a remote separately)
3. It's tiny! And it easily fits into most entertainment system
4. Is relatively cheap compared to the newest systems
5. Is very affordable, especially when compared with the 2005-2006 systems
6. Has built-in online capability and playing online with others is free
Cons:
1. Despite its newness, it does not have the latest graphics capabilities
2. Its online experience is not as robust and polished as Xbox Live
3. Discs are top-loaded, which requires more room than front-loading trays
4. Unlike the original PlayStation 2, it has no hard drive expansion option

When the PS2 launched, it created a buzz that we hadn't seen again until the XBOX360 came out. People were lining up overnight for a system that would only come out with a few games for the first few months. The price tag was high and the games were $50 each. But it was worth it.
Over the past four years the price has come down to $150, and a newer, slim version has debuted. Both have their merits, but here are some insights on each.
Older version:
*Hard Drive expandability. The only licensed game I know of that used the Hard Drive was Final Fantasy, but there were other reasons for adding one, and there are plenty of companies that still support adding a HDD to the PS2.
*Not uncommon to experience read errors. The laser is very finicky, and you can easily have problems that are not solved without someone opening the system.
*Scratched discs when stood up (on one end). I never experienced this, but I saw the result of some discs used in a system that was used vertically.
*Age. All of these systems are older, and unless you have a guarantee or know the previous owner; buyer beware. Although you might cherish your video game systems, plenty of people treat them like trash.
New (Slim) Version:
*Small. About a quarter the size and a third the weight. But this is deceiving, because the power brick is now external (helps with size and cooling). So as long as you're not bothered by the huge power brick, it’s great.
*Built in network card. No buying the $35 network adapter like you have to on the old version.
*Loss of hard drive expansion. They removed the ability to add a hard drive. This was because of a lack of supported HDD games and illegal use of HDD's in PS2's.
*Top loading (no tray like most computer DVD drives). This reduced the complexity, which means one less thing to go wrong.
A couple of other major points that apply to both versions:
*USB slots. Plug in a USB keyboard for online play; very useful.
*Different multi-tap adaptors for the two versions. Check carefully for which version the tap is designed before buying.
*Longer controller cables. The PS2 controller cables are longer than Dual Shock controllers for the original Playstation. They also weigh about 33% less.

I like the slim line much better than the other PS2 it's electronic components, ex: the optical eye and disk spin motor, seem to last longer in this model. I have had fewer problems with disk read errors or certain color disks not playing in this model also. I actually bought this PS2 to replace an older model one (the "fat" PS2) that will no longer play blue disks and has had to be taken apart and worked on more than once. I would definitely suggest saving time money and energy and say buy this model and forget about the other "fat" one.

good workin conditioneverything was great, good games too. the only one problem was that it was three controllers in which 2 had the x button barely workin or not working. and the other one thgat was good got damage after three days of used and dont know why.. i brought a new controllers but overall it was a good deal...

Sony Playstation 2- Game console-charcoal blackPS2 worked for 2 weeks, then would not turn on. Needless to say, I am not too happy, as I paid $50 less than a new one, and now am out that cash. Not sure this is the seller's fault, but leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Best Game Console Ever IMHO (The Slim PS2)The slimmer version (later version) of the PS2 is much more stable. There are hardly ever disc read errors, and if so, it's because of the disc, not the player...I've had one of these slim PS2's for about 3 years and never had a single problem. I bought this one as a birthday gift, which I am excited about. I have played Wii, game cube, gameboy advanced, Nintendo (original), Sega, Atari, Pong (LOL), etc....and I'd still say this is the very best. I have not yet tried or know anyone personally who has bought the very expensive PS3. I can't see really how much they could improve upon this product...maybe speed and internet ability. I understand it has a hard drive, but I also heard that you can't play your OLD games on it. On this PS2 Slim version, you can play any playstation game.

We now have three PS2s and one PS3, as well as a PSP slim. Sony's reputation for letting down their customers aside, we're content with what they've done for the gaming market. Our kids enjoy their PS2s, and we have three units networked for full-screen team gaming in the comfort of our home. Some people go all out and get one of every console, but that just makes for a clutter. Pick one and stick to it, I say.
