This is an amazing piece of hardware. It is good at doing a lot of things, and has a lot of nice features.
PROS:
-Screen - HUGE! Bright, vivid and sharp!
-Graphics - This system is almost as powerful as a PS2, and is portable.
-Memory Stick Expansion - The PSP supports Memory Stick PRO Duo. What's nice about this is they make up to a 2GB capacity sticks, so you can get close to 500 MP3s (plus saves) onto one card, or close to 3 Full Length DVD Rips.
-UMD - Universal Media Disc is the propietary medium in which the PSP runs. They can fit 1.8GB of memory, and can rotate at a relatively fast speed.
-Wi-Fi – This doesn’t just have Wi-Fi, it has wireless internet via access point. With the latest updates you can even check your e-mail on your PSP. You can connect to people nationwide on a growing line up of online games, and play them head to head.
-Accessories - THERE ARE TONS! Like the iPod, there are stero speakers; there are charge cases, extra batteries, designated headphones, screen covers, skins, etc. You won't have any trouble finding ways to make your PSP not only original, but last a long time.
CONS:
-Dead pixel issue - Most PSPs have dead pixels as many LCD screens do - As a caution, if you buy a PSP, see if they offer a replacement plan just in case! To test for dead pixels, you can upload random colors onto your Memory Stick PRO Duo and see if there are any "specs."
-Battery Life - As you've heard, the battery life is very lack luster. There are plans to release larger capacity batteries, but I'm sure at a great cost to your wallet.
-Lack-luster software - The PSP has a really good launch. There were three or four games that really stood out. Lumines, Ridge Racer, Wipeout Pure, and Tony Hawk Underground 2. But everything after its launch has just been okay, if that. There isn't a whole lot of variety in the games, with limited RPGs, RTS, Adventure, and innovative titles but more games coming within the next year look VERY promising!
-Design - Aestetics are right on. This machines beautiful, sexy, and nicely put together. But its a con because its bringing PS2 games onto a handheld with one analog stick... and that one analog stick is very awkward to use.
-Load times - 40 second loads are atrocious!
-Not to user-friendly- connecting to anything is a hastle, but they have tons of webpages for that, so don't let that stop you.
-No S-Video - I know one question a lot of people had was, "can I watch my PSP movies on my TV?" No. There are methods in the near future that will be readily available, but nothing with just a cord.
-PRICE! - $299.99 is EXPENSIVE, especially due to the fact that a lot of kids want this!
ESSENTIAL EXTRAS:
-Logitech Playgear case
-Import a better screen cover
-Rag in a bag - keep your finger prints off your PSP for $.99
-USB to USB-A cord - doesn't come with one
-Games - a Sampler Disc is the only thing playable in the box. Burnout Legends is my personal recommendation for a first title.
-Movies - HUGE Library, and new one each week. (Sin City – Recommended!)
IMPROVE YOUR EXPERIENCE:
-Cycle the battery when you get it
-Change screen settings to medium brightness
-If you have an original PSP, have 2 memory cards, 1 for gameplay, and 1 to not have the updates download to play Emulators.
-Buy stereo headphones
-A USB - USB-A cord
BOTTOM LINES: Despite some flaws, this machine has a lot of potential that is currently being unutilized, but most definately wi
