Sony BDP-S301 Blu-Ray Player

It plays just about any dvd and it produces an excellent picture even on none blu-ray dvds.I decided to buy it when the price was right.There wasn't anything I disliked about it.

This is a great CD/DVD/BLU RAY player; and, it comes at a very reasonable price. It is small enough to fit comfortably within most Home Theater cabinets, and is light enough to move around easily. It does a beautiful job of playing all media; and, has the ability to "boost" your SD items up to High Def. It comes with a great Sony multipurpose remote control, which can be programmed to control most of your other Home Theater equipment.

Included with the unit are a power cord, and three RCA equipped cables. This will permit you to connect the unit to either your TV or to your A/V Amplifier; however, it will NOT permit you to connect it to use it in HD mode; or, to obtain the built-in Dolby audio functions. To get 1080 in progressive scan mode, you will have to purchase a HDMI cable. You CAN get 1080 in the interlaced mode, using component video hookup. You will also need a TOSVIDEO (Optical) cable, if you really want to get the full, surround sound, DOLBY experience from this machine;OR, a dolby equipped A/V amplifier with separate inputs for each set of speakers. The S301 has a built-in Dolby Decoder, and can output the 5 signals separately, via RCA plugs. It has an Optical audio output port. It also has a component video output, and standard left-right audio connectors; and S-VIDEO connector. You cannot get HD via the S-Video route at all. My A/V receiver, which is a Sony model DA1000 unit does NOT have HDMI inputs! Therefore, I am forced to either direct-connect the video from the BDP-300 to my Hitachi 52" flat screen, and connect the audio via optical cable to my A/V amplifier; OR, live without Progressive Scan. Frankly, I consider this a shortcoming......by SONY, in both their DA1000ES receiver, and in the BDP-300 unit. I also have a SONY DVD Recorder, which DOES provide progressive scan recording AND playback, via the component video route. Why can't this unit do the same?

All-in-all, I consider the BDP300 a good unit for most applications. If you are going to hook it directly to your TV, via HDMI, it will work like a charm; and, if your A/V Receiver has HDMI ports, it will work perfectly in that arena also. It plays CD's very well, and you get full Dolby processing of them. In addition, it does a great job with DVD's. Blu-Ray is in a world, all it's own, with very limited applications available at this time. I cannot fairly evaluate the units capability in that field without more testing.

This was my first HD DVD player, and Sony hit it right on the head with this one! Easy to operate, works well with my universal remote. Only negative I can think of is it takes a little while to load a DVD, but that is because of the amount of data in a Blu-Ray. I would highly recommend one!

The picture quality is like nothing else. The Sony Blu-Ray enhances all my DVDs. I am extremely pleased.

I have a home theater with a 1080p projector and a 1080i Rear projection TV. After the war between HD and Blu Ray ended, now is the time to start buying from the winner. Like Standard DVD when they frist came out, Blu Ray DVD's are priced mid 20's to 30 dollars a disk. So now that there is one format the cost should be going down.
The picture quality on the Sony Blu Ray player is Amazing. If you have not seen a full 1080p picture, go to your local electronics story and see what you are missing.
The only down side I see now is the slow loading time. It takes at least 1 minute for the player to get ready, and once you insert a disc it takes a couple of minutes at least before your disc is ready for you to access it.
But the picture in full 1080p is worth the wait.

I Purchased this player to update to the current technology. I'm also planning to up update to a 1080p television as well as surround sound. This Blu-Ray player has improved the picture on my 1080i TV, and has lots of features that are not on a standard DVD player. This player also allows you to download software updates from Sony.com. All in all I'm very happy with my purchase

the BR disk player works like a charm.
the player was well pack and quick on the deliver time.
The unit didn't come with a remote control but my Sone Brave TV has a remote that control the player.

This is my second review, a follow-up if you wish. I have had this Blu-Ray BDP-S301 for several months now and it has been a great performer. I updated the firmware about 2 weeks after I bought it. Very easy to do. It did not improve the start-up/warm-up time. Start-up/warm-up time still a little slow and does not play VCD's. Upconversion is outstanding. My display is a Sony KDS-60A3000. I use a Monster High Speed HDMI cable. Blu-ray movies literally "Jump Off The Screen". Since both units are Sony they are "Theatre Sync" compatible. I love this feature. It allows the 2 units to communicate with each other. In order to take advantage of 7.1 surround sound this player offers you have to have a compatible receiver (with HDMI inputs & output) that offers it. The 7.1 sound is only available through the HDMI hookup. I didn't want to spring for the $1000.00 for a new receiver. I am very happy with my Yamaha 7.1 Surround Receiver with 7 Infinity Speakers & 12in Sub. Overall I found this DVD Player to be an EXCELLENT Product.

quality very best.And blu-ray disk is high capaciy than DVD.But I don't have this player and not used any time.It dislike for me I think it no has TV or Cable tuner.

I purchased a blu ray player from these people and did so with a lightning fast payment. I left them feedback and on numerous occasions asked for them to do the same. This is now going on two months and they haven't left me feedback. This is not appropriate ebay decorum. I hate people like this. They expect you to comment and won't return favor. I paid for this item 5 minutes after the auction ended. It's been months and nothing. These people need some time for self reflection. We buy their used crap and they don't have the decency to show appreciation by leaving good feedback. Shame on these animals.

it's easy to hook up and extremely easy to use. takes a couple of minutes to power up fully but nothing excessive. the controls are easy to use and the picture is great

The picture is awesome! The audio and video are so crystal clear and multi dimensional. Very easy to use, only on some blue rays we need to change it from 1080i to 760 or 480 for a clearer picture but I know this is due to the DISK not the player.
It has a sleek design and Sony has a great reputation. You won't be disappointed!

We had shopped for a Blu-Ray player for a very long time. Trying to figure out just the right model. Which one do I need?? After getting all of that figured out and decided on a Sony, a 300 model is all anyone could ever need for there home. Sony being the leader in Blu-Ray could never find one at what i considered a bargain price. So what did I do? Started to watch e-bay ( as always) and befor long got the chance to buy one for about 35% off retail,retail as in your Kmart,Walmart,Best-Buy, ect. Got to save a very nice peice of change plus had some fun doing it. I have learned that your shipping can put you over the top. So you have to watch out for those kind of sellers b ut there are still some honest people out there on e-bay and it's up to you to find them. One more reason to give feedback!!!! Good or bad. The player plays Blu-ray DVD's excellently, and upgrades my regular dvd's. It plays 5.1 and DTS sound. It syncs perfectly with my SONY Bravia tv. It does everything I expected and does it perfectly to give me the best HD experience.

The system works pretty well as described.
However, it takes way too long from the time you power-on to the time that you are able to click-in the functions compared to other regular dvd players.
I don't know if it is because of a problem with my unit only or the machine itself is supposed to take that long.

I bought the BD S301 because of the brand name quality history, it's compatibility with my Sony HD tv, and the Sony surround system purchased at the same time. The quality of the Blu-Ray picture is outstanding! My only complaint is the time it takes to read the disk and start playing. I haven't actually timed it, but believe it is close to five minutes before you can actually start playing the movie.

I have been shopping for a BlueRay player for some time and regularly review eBay for options. In this case we found a new Blu-Ray player at a fraction of the cost in the local retail stores. It has performed at or above expectations since it was installed several weeks ago.
