Elton gets back to his roots and then some!

The album is loaded with intriguing lyrics and with a bit of a different vocal approach by Reg. He is at times nostalgic for the good old days of the Elton John Band of the '70's without getting stuck in a lamentable time warp. Elton has a little something for everyone on this album but it is not the expected mega-hit the press was hoping for.

The song with the most radio airplay is the haunting "I Want Love", which is my personal favorite on the CD! Elton's vocals are much deeper and raspier than on past efforts and for this song, it works! "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore" was the 2nd single to receive extended FM and AM radio attention, and it deserved it! It is a beautiful ballad and again, reminds us that Elton's vocal prowess and range is ever-changing and at times quite suprising.

The CD has some duds but if you enjoy Elton John, even these will catch your attention and make you tap your foot. Overall, this was not what the world was expecting when it was released in 2001 as the "Elton John comeback recording". However, the CD is, as always, well-produced and worth having in your music library. If you are an Elton John fan, this would be in the middle of Elton's 40-odd recordings and a definite must-have!

Songs From The West Coast - Elton John is Back!
Review created: 10/05/01

Pros:
The Best In Years

Cons:
NONE

I had heard the reviews before I ever purchased Elton John s new album Songs From The West Coast. Everything I had read, said this was the best album from Elton John in years. It already had been praised by critics and has been said that it was the Elton John of the seventies back to his original best. Well being an Elton John fan I knew that I had to hear this for myself. I have purchased his previous albums and my favorite of late was Elton John Love Songs. I saw Elton in concert last year and it was a wonderful show! It was just Elton John alone on stage with his voice and his piano. I...

Elton Goes Back to his Roots & Returns To Form
Review created: 10/19/01

Pros:
Excellent Album from Elton John.

Cons:
One too many ballads, needs a rocker or two to make it great.

Throughout his entire career, Elton John had created a rich legacy for more than thirty years. In the 1970s, he released several albums where seven of them went to number one in a row including two albums that debuted at number one. In the 1980s while continuing to have hit singles, he was going through personal demons of booze and drugs while making terrible albums that only contained a few hits. In the 1990s, he sobered up and gained more hit singles again but his albums fell short of the grandness that 70s albums like Tumbleweed Connection , Honky Chateau , Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and...

Indistinct Elton: Songs That Ease Themselves Away
Review created: 03/15/07
by: wlswarts -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Some decent lyrics

Cons:
Musically unimaginative, Thematically overbearing

Lately, I've been finding one or two musical artists and getting a bunch of their music and listening it to, getting into artists who I have (historically) not owned anything by. I picked up "Songs From The West Coast" by Elton John because I have generally liked his singles and I thought this would be an album that I would have a very pure listening experience with; none of the titles were recognizable to me. As it turns out, I think "I Want Love" might have been on a Target commercial I once saw. Otherwise, my listen was pretty virginal. This was also my first Elton John album I've...

  The Reg Is Back

Pros:
Great songs in the style that made Elton such a success in the seventies

Cons:
None

Sir Elton John is like Coca-Cola. In 1985 (the year I was born), Coke altered their original formula and created New Coke to help combat their formidable opponent Pepsi. But American consumers didn't want a replacement for the classic Coca-Cola. In their view, classic Coke was an American legend. Production of New Coke ended the same week it began. On the other side of the Atlantic during the eighties, Elton John was messing with his popular formula for music that spawned hits like Daniel and Your Song. He abandoned his classic piano ballads, honky-tonk, and rock songs for bland pop and...

  Back To Basics
Review created: 01/06/02
by: clydoscope -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
For those who grooved to Rocketman etc, this will be a revival of sorts.

Cons:
Nothing as anthemic as "Sacrifice", or "Your Song".

I play the piano and I sing and I write songs with Bernie [Taupin]. And if the songs are good, then the album is going to be good, so let's just get back to basics and make a record without too many frills . It was with this simple focus in mind that Reginald Dwight (yes, yes Elton ji) began his return to roots album. The piano pounder has in the past delivered smash hits such as Your Song, Don t Let The Sun Go Down, and Sacrifice . And just when everyone thought he had turned official soundtrack producer for Disney think Lion King, Aida, El Dorado he gets back to what he does best. Songs...
