THE ROLLING STONES KEEP ROLLING!
Review created: 03/05/07

Despite having to replace yet another guitarist, The Rolling Stones continue their timeless musical and turmultuos journey with this collaboration of the 1978 recording sessions entitled "SOME GIRLS". RONNIE WOOD replaces MICK TAYLOR, bringing to the band his own signature sound to intertwine with that of long time co-founder, song writer and guitarist, KIETH RICHARDS. RICHARDS, when asked about the title of the album responded "Because we couldn't remember all their F**kin' names!" Among the now classic hits "MISS YOU", "SHATTERED", and "BEAST OF BURDEN", fans of the band are treated to another 'STONES' cover of legendary MOTOWN recording artists, THE TEMPTATIONS with "IT WAS JUST MY IMMAGINATION". Originally the album cover sported the likenesses of such celebs as RAQUEL WELCH, LUCILLE BALL AND DESI ARNEZ. LUCILLE BALL sued the band and the celebrity faces were removed, altering the album to it's present look with now bright colored "VOIDS" where faces once adorned.

A Variety of Cool Stone's Tunes
Review created: 11/11/06

This is kind of an odd album. None of the tunes really have anything to do with each other. Miss You has a disco sound, Far Away Eyes is as close to country as the Stones will get, they do a cover of the Temptation's (I think that's who did this song, could have been the Four Tops) Just My Imagination which is actually a pretty inventive rendition of a cover song, and Shattered which is kind of a goofy rambling song, almost like Mick was doing a precursor to rap. The closest thing to what you might think of as a regular Stone's tune is When The Whip Comes Down. Not that there's anything wrong with what they've done on this album, but with so many different kinds of songs, it seems like a collection instead of an album. With that in mind, they really show their versatility, songsmanship, and musicianship on this album. Ringo Starr has got nothing on Charlie Watts. Most people already know this, but check out his cool drumming in Shattered. He does a lot of off-time cool drumming that just seems to work. I don't know how, it sounds so goofy, but it works. That's what makes it so cool. And albums like this are what make these guys such a cool band.

Some Girls give me money which is always good
Review created: 11/02/06

It's some of the best work The Stones have ever done except for Exile on Main Street but that's just me. I stopped collecting Mick and the Boys after Emotional Rescue but I do like the song Going to a Go-go. The best work is from 1965 to 1978 as far as I'm concerned..

The Rolling Stones Some Girls Review
Review created: 09/03/06(updated 11/04/06)

The Rolling Stones CD Some Girls is certainly an album that crashed through boundaries the record industry and the pulse of the nations musical taste held on with much tenacity to the disco beat. When Saturday Night Fever in the United States was the best selling Album of all time and Punk was underground in New York and exploding in The United Kingdom this was a very difficult time to create a Rock and Roll album that would appeal to everyone. For this was the time Rock and Roll was taking itself very seriously and if a song wasn't 10 minutes long it wasn't worth playing. And the only thing we knew for sure was Lou Gramm's girlfriend or lover was as cold as ice. The Rolling Stones never stagnant in their musical endeavors created the release of Some Girls which had a bit of everything in it. So if you don't know what direction to take, go everywhere and that is exactly what they did. From the punk sound of Shattered, The now legendary and classic "Beast of Burden" might be the best rock ballad ever and with the genuine rocking riffs of When the "Whip Comes down" and "Respectable" illustrates the Stones can keep on rocking and Rolling and even let you throw on polyester pants and boogie the night away to "Miss You". And it was certainly no mistake that the Number one Hit off the album gave the reluctant rockers to accept Disco in an entirely different avenue and still be cool. And if that wasn't enough the Classic Country "Far Away Eyes" was the icing on the cake. The song would become a Stones classic to it's comical lyrics and country parody melody. If any Rock and Roll Album would represent a band's ability to remain true to their roots and still move with the times this would be the first album of it's type to epitomize diversity in musical composition. In an era where Rock and Roll was going to undergo serious future changes The Rolling Stones Some Girls was a granite stepping stones in the decade to come and in my opinion is the best example of what the Stones do best, Play rock and roll and we know its only rock and roll but we like it.

Beginners Luck in Music Selection (Where it all began W/O)

Pros:
possibly the last great Stones album

Cons:
possibly the last great Stones album

I was intrigued when invited to participate in Lambchops's write off Where it all began. It seemed an interesting topic to go back to the first CD (or record in my case) in the collection. For me, this meant a trip back some 24 years. I had to dig up some ancient spiral notebooks to verify the record. Surprisingly, my memory can be sketchy at times. I know some people have embarassing first albums like Lief Garrett or Milli Vanilli. Others will have some classic album like Led Zeppelin IV or Are You Experienced. Still others were ahead of the curve with an early Smashing Pumpkins or Dave...

Pros:
Hmmm...someone told me that these guys are a pretty damn good rock 'n roll band.

Cons:
One line that leaves a VERY bad taste in my mouth.

The Rolling Stones. Easily the longest-lasting hit-making outfit in musical history. As the fellas pass 40 years of making successful records and continue to wow crowds on another sell-out tour, it calls to mind one question that's vaguely troubled me recently. How come The Stones don't move me? I mean, it's not that I don't like them. Hell, I own "Forty Licks". I have that "Jump Back" compilation too. I've at various points owned not only the album I'm reviewing, but "Emotional Rescue" (on vinyl, to boot) and "Dirty Work". Wait, I think I may have just answered my own question. Well, aside...

Punk, disco, the temptations, and that ever-popular dirty blues boogie.

Pros:
Ten concise Stones songs, each one great in its own way.

Cons:
Overt pandering to mainstream by including punk and disco songs.

As far as most critics and the general record-consuming public were concerned, the Rolling Stones, the band that held the trademark rights to the title of Greatest Rock Band In The World, the band that made friggin' "Gimme Shelter," were all but dead. They hadn't made a commerically successful album in years, and what they were coming up with critics were roasting on a rotating spit. So the boys go into the studio to record their 1978 album. Mick Jagger, usually influenced by current trends in popular music, occasionally to a fault, writes some songs. One disco song, one New York rant, one...

 Probably the Best Stones Album
Review created: 01/24/01
by: 4-1-1 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
may be the best album ever by the Rolling Stones

Cons:
Under 41 minutes in length

I am not a huge fan of the Rolling Stones. I don t really care too much for this band s early work, and I don t too much like the stuff that the band cranked out during the past 15 years while Jagger and company ran an extensive feathering the nest retirement tour. That being said, I will confess that there is one particular Stones album that I consider a treasure. I have an extensive music collection on various media: CDs, cassettes, LPs, MP3s and even 8-track tapes. I have, however, only two Rolling Stones albums... and Some Girls is the only album I have in CD format.... and it is the only.

Fairly solid, but not one of the best from the band.
Review created: 05/04/01

Pros:
Decent songs that show the band still had some kick left in the late '70s.

Cons:
What the hell? A disco tune?

Some Girls is an uneven album at best. Sure, you've got some gritty, nasty tunes on here that sound like the Rolling Stones at the peak of form. However, the band's attempt to sound "more modern" is just pathetic. Yes, folks, I'm talking about "Miss You" when I talk about a pathetic attempt. That song is nothing but damn disco, and sounds more "dated" than anything else on here. The members of the Rolling Stones, seemingly, felt the need to "update" their sound by surrendering to the disco craze of the late '70s, and "Miss You" is an obvious result of that horrible, horrible decision. What...
