There ere 2 types of Zappa albums in his all discography. (aprox: 100 records) 1)The albums of talking about something 2) The albums of playing guitar (like no one can play it This one is his the most heavy and magnificent work.It contains live performances (HE IS IN TRANS WITH MIND BLOWING GUITAR SOLOS) in 1979 and up to may 1980. I recommend this album strongly to all guitar lovers (not to the beginners and amateur guitarists) and to all rock record collectors. ZAPPA IS FLYING!
Also recommended : "over nite sensation", hot rats,we're only it in,you can't do that on stage vol 2, "uncle meat, guitar (1988)

  Zappa Purchase
Review created: 02/10/08

I like the online buying because you can find what you want when you want it. This is the case with the Zappa disc. None of retail stores I've been in recently have had it.
There is one thing that I think that Ebay can improve upon. When viewing a list of items, I will see an item that is not at the top of the list and will click on it to view the details. When I return to the list of items, most times I am returned to the top of the list and not where I left off. This is a minor inconvenience but it would be nice if the shopper was returned to were he or she left off.
Thanks

Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar - 1995
Review created: 02/06/07

It is all guitar solos extracted from various concert tours circa 1979. I saw him several times during that time and he was never animated, but boy he could play. Zappa can't play with the passion like, Hendrix or Stevie Ray, but I believe he has better range and can he shred. It's worth a buy if you love guitar and a must if you are a Zappa fan. It's something you can put on as background music also. Very Nice

Zappa's Best Album from the Eighties
Review created: 12/13/06

Pros:
Zappa's masterpiece from the eighties. Every track is a joy.

Cons:
Listeners need to have a taste for electric guitar music

I haven't yet heard all eight albums from Zappa's guitar-driven band period (1979-1985), but I've heard most of them as well as live performances by the various bands as compiled on the You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore series. Based on what I've heard so far, this album, Shut Up And Play Your Guitar, is the best of what Zappa had to offer during that time period. Its closest competitor from that era is the album most like it, Guitar, released in 1988. Moreover, the present album also deserves to be on the short list of candidates for best Zappa album of all. One caveat, however. Since this..

Pros:
great, great, great guitar playing

Cons:
cds are too damn short!

I wish this set were only on 2 cds. It would fit. It'd also make it cheaper, because more people should buy this one. It and Guitar are the 2 I play most from Zappa. You can listen to it while doing Anything, and while you listen, you find yourself working harder, faster stronger - you are propelled!! It's also the perfect title to push to friends that don't know Zappa, but if they are into progressive rock, they'll get hooked into FZ easy enough. The guitar is wild and wired. Doesn't matter what the tracks are called, each cd contains 30-something minutes of solos taken from stage shows....

  Shut Up 'N Listen, Guitarists
Review created: 12/05/00
by: stilldreaming -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Zappa's soloing, great little audio snippets

Cons:
Could be fit on two discs, a bit too pricey for this reason

Frank Zappa is (was) a national treasure that too few knew about. Solos from his great music are highlighted in the compilation. Not to mention the groovy little dialog tracks interspersed hither and yon. They sound so great if you enjoy listening to people just talking. They leave the listener with a mental picture that can be so fun. You get to fill in the blanks. They go really well with the music, because the music demands your full mental interaction. The voice tracks are a great primer for that. "Oh, ship ahoy!" Any guitar in the western world worth their salt should be at least...

Shut Up And Play Yer Guitar
Review created: 12/29/99

Pros:
Everything!

Cons:
Expensive!

My opinion....... FZ is a hell of a soloist, and this album proves it. Two hours of guitar solos, interludes, and experiments! My wish come true! Some of these songs are brilliant, and any one person will enjoy them. From the trio of Shut Up and Play Yer Guitars, to the farce "VAriations On the Secret Chord Progression Of Carlos Santana", to the experimental bouzouki piece at the end. A great master of Frank Zappa. No singing, no talking, only PLAYING! Buy it, it's rare and expensive, so beware. However, if you have an afternoon, and 40 bucks to spare, buy it!
