I am a Christian Bale fan and that's why I bought this movie. It was better than I thought it would be. I really enjoyed Jeffrey Wright's Dominican character Peoples. He was a riot. I've already watched it twice.

Shaft - an excellent homage to the original
Review created: 04/07/08
by:

I bought this movie a week or so ago because it is a favorite of my wife's. After watching it with her, I realized that not only had I seen this movie before, but I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Anyone who is a fan of action movies, or Samuel L. Jackson, or the ORIGINAL Shaft - all will find something to like about this movie.

Sure, the plot device has been done before (privileged majority male performs a hate crime on a minority, appears to get off scott-free) but the acting was well done, the pacing of the movie itself was excellent and the dialog was at times comical as well as serious- which was necessary given the subject matter.

Overall, this was definitely a good purchase as it is a good movie that bears watching more than once, if for no other reason than to see certain characters (Peoples, anyone?) again. I recommend this movie to anyone who loves action flicks.

The movie "Shaft" starring Samuel L. Jackson
Review created: 12/10/07
by:

"Shaft" was a movie that had just about everything I could have hoped for. You had quality action. You had quality violence. You had quality music. You had quality cool, simply put, you had "Shaft." This reincarnation of "Shaft" has Samuel L. Jackson playing John Shaft. But, to not have him replacing the John Shaft of old, we find that he is the nephew of, well, the John Shaft of old, played by the original Richard Roundtree. This time around Shaft thinks that he can make a difference among the racists that are in the police force, court system, and the wealthy.
It all starts with a racist killing of a black man who was just minding his own business at a restaurant, gets taunted repeatedly by, Walter (Christian Bale), gets the crowd to laugh at Walter, but then gets his skull bashed in when he steps outside for a smoke. The only witness, a dudette who is too afraid to testify, among other things, and Walter gets out on bail and heads for Switzerland for some time on the slopes waiting for the heat to die down a little. Shaft is pissed. Another racist getting away and there’s not much he can do at the time. But Shaft persists, Walter comes back to the states, and now it is a race to find the witness, with a contract price now on her head, and Shaft has to save the day.
Samuel L. Jackson is today’s epitome of cool, and he doesn’t upstage Richard Roundtree either as it seems Richard actually has an easier time with the ladies. And Shaft is viscous in his wanting things right, isn’t afraid to bash a skull in where needed, and knows how to manipulate the bad guys. Exactly what you would expect, with the addition of a great twist towards the ending that I didn’t see coming.
So I won’t bore you anymore with a time consuming review but just say that I found "Shaft" one of the most entertaining movies, even without nudity. Samuel L. Jackson is one bad-mother "shut your mouth", Richard Roundtree comes off great as the uncle who knows what John is fighting for, and sort of helps mentor the younger Shaft into reality, but also how reality can be made to work for you. The movie leads the door open for a sequel, and I’m actually hoping they consider a follow-up.

New Shaft Movie As Good as Earlier Film
Review created: 07/10/06

Love this updated version of Shaft because John Singleton (writer, director) has captured the tempo and continual racial problems in today's New York City...artistically, music is still the best (from original film) and the acting couldn't be better--Samuel Jackson, Christian Bale are excellent...and Bust Rhymes is always terrific even in this tiny role...even if you're not old enough to have seen the original, this should be a must on anyone's DVDs to own list.

  Samuel L. Jackson in Shaft

Pros:
Fun performance from Jackson and cast, keeps the spirit of the original

Cons:
The scope of the script is too broad

Shaft (2000): New Deal Prodcutions/ Paramount Pictures Rating: USA: R Seeing as how many of the films I choose to write about here at Epinions are exploitation movies, it probably doesn t come as a big surprise to any of my regular readers that I rushed out today to catch John Singleton s updating of the classic blaxploitation film series, Shaft. Despite the fact that I wasn t even born when the original film hit the theater (1971), I've been lucky enough to be a kid in the video age, which means I've been able to see and enjoy the earlier films (along with the other blaxploitation classics...

  Tired, recycled, implausible, fascistic plot
Review created: 06/22/00
by: Stephen_Murray-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
acting, cintematography

Cons:
hackneyed plot, ethnic stereotyping

I remember when Pauline Kael first attacked the vigilante aspect of "Dirty Harry." I don't see how changing the color of the cop glorified for social cleansing makes the product any less fascistic. And the ethnic stereotyping, particularly of Latinos, but also of WASPS, is no less objectionable from a black director than it would be from a white one. There is some range of black characters, and a stereotyped solidary Italian family wanting nothing to do with lawmen. There are rich white devils in control of the "justice system." And a drug gang of wacko Latinos (headed by Jeffrey Wright)....

More watered down than free beer.

Pros:
A few exciting scenes and a great soundtrack.

Cons:
Lack of a real direction, not the best acted movie around.

This movie was a huge disappointment for me. I have watched the old Shaft movies, and agreed that he was one bad (shut yo' mouth!). Sorry, I had to work that in. Anyway, I thought Shaft was a character for the millenium in the 1970's, so I didn't see a reason to change him. It's a shame I didn't direct the movie. Detective John Shaft is played by Samuel L. Jackson. Let my criticism start here. I like Jackson, and respect his talent. The problem is this: Jackson is a funny guy. You can see in his eyes that he is never far from a joke. That was perfect for Pulp Fiction, but Shaft is more...

  Get The Shaft!
Review created: 06/19/00
by: pmills1210-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
Good acting, good energy

Cons:
Not at all original, not enough focus on Shaft

Could it be that Samuel L. Jackson is lining up work for the next several years? Perhaps. He's already on board to appear in the next two installments of the "Star Wars" series. If his "Shaft" is as successful at the box office as the Richard Roundtree trilogy (1971-73), then Jackson could be going back and forth between series of films. After seeing "Shaft," I wouldn't mind that at all. Jackson's John Shaft is the nephew of Roundtree's John Shaft. Jackson plays a New York detective assigned to find and protect Diane Palmieri(Toni Collette), the sole witness to a racially motivated hate crime.

  Return of Shaft
Review created: 06/18/00
by: 32_Footsteps -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Fast-paced plot, Richard Roundtree on the big screen again, Busta Rhymes with a breakout performance

Cons:
Rountree and Rhymes are marginalized, Jackson struggles with the part, cookie-cutter characters.

Everyone knows of Shaft - the private detective that got the women, got the crooks, and generally was too cool be on the screen. I hear people quote Isaac Hayes' memorable theme song all the time (and quite poorly, may I add). It was no-brainer that someone would try to make a new Shaft movie, because clearly this movie would make some serious money. So I went to see it, expecting something I didn't quite get. Of course, the movie starts off with the memorable theme song. Isaac Hayes' "Theme from Shaft" blares out in beautiful stereo, and fans of the original will notice that this theme is...
