Dazzling movie. You have to watch this at least twice!
Review created: 07/14/08

My wife can only watch half of a movie before retiring for the night and finishing it later. She couldn't take her eyes off it until it ended. I had to leave the room because I wanted to restart it, so much was happening and I didn't want to finish it until I really 'got it'. Now she wants to see it again, and I'll be able to see it from the start again. What a movie. Have since caught a couple of episodes of Firefly on Universal HD. You might say the entire series compressed into one movie is Serenity. It is one of the most entrancing movies that I've seen in years.

 Great Movie!
Review created: 06/03/08
by:

I'll admit, I've drunk the Kool Aid where "Firefly" and this movie are concerned. "Firefly" died well before it's time. As this movie proves.
Fast paced dialogue, hilarious one liners, great action sequences coupled with great performances by the main cast, though special mention should go to Summer Glau for her portrayal of River Tam. The way she can switch from the wide eyed innocent mentally fragile girl to an almost unstoppable warrior is breathtaking to watch.
The real strength of this movie comes, not from the action sequences but from the quiet character moments. Like the one between River and her brother Simon, the self-appointed protector of his baby sister, or Mal and Shepard Book.

The ending did feel a bit rushed to me, and I was saying quite literally "That's it?"
The only real negative thing to say about this movie is that there probably won't be a sequel, it did poorly at the box office, but as with "Firefly" before it it's the little movie that could picking up a lot of fans via DVD.
If you haven't seen this movie yet, I suggest you either rent it or do yourself a favor and buy it. You won't be sorry.

 Action-packed Sci-fi film
Review created: 05/12/08(updated 05/18/08)

This movie is action-packed from the word "go". Based on the TV show "Firefly", this movie provides a "big bang finish" for the show, giving depth and closure to the characters. Even with no knowledge of the TV series, a viewer is provided plenty of information on each character to keep from feeling out of the loop. Great banter and likeable characters make up for any deficiencies in the plot. Definitely an entertaining movie as long as it isn't overthought (it is, after all, sci-fi)!

I came late to this party but here we have a cast, crew, director, and story line just begging for a sequel. Hope Universal steps up to the pump and sees it through. This modern day western is slick, well directed, well acted, and the camera work is masterful. With a bigger budget and eye-popping special effects a sequel to Serenity would be a delightful mind blower. Shame to let this one end the story.

Plot OK, but effects and audio dynamite. Concept of movie kind of out there, but that is fine with me. Entertaining enough.

 From our patrons.......
Review created: 03/09/08

Our patrons throughly enjoyed this movie.
Others that had seen it before on the 'big screen' said it was a whole new experience watching it in High-Definition on a 73-inch screen.
Many noted that it is imperitive that anyone interested in watching this movie, should first watch the entire Firefly season to get the entire storyline that leads up to this movie/episode.

 Sci-Fi action thriller Serenity
Review created: 09/04/07

This movie is a fusion of old westerns and science fiction, it is what the world could become according to Joss Whedon. The movie stems from the series Firefly which, despite it's almost cult following, only ran for one season. I highly recommend not only the movie Serenity but the series Firefly as well. This is a great choice for sci-fi fans and those that wouldn't know the difference between a Klingon and a Romulan. The HD DVD version includes high resolution playback, interactive menus, and behind the scenes interviews that are perfect for any would be fan or experienced "Browncoat."

This movie was an excellent addition to the Firefly series. I was really pleased that Joss Whedon was able to make a movie installment for the series since they weren't able to finish the series since it was cancelled.

You don't have to see the series first in order to enjoy it, but it certainly helps you understand each character better if you do.

This movie ties up a lot of loose ends for characters, and ends some characters. I really wish we would have learned more about Book, I was really curious about his past, but it didn't talk about it.

If you enjoyed the series, or if you are a sci-fi fan you'll enjoy this movie.

I recommend it to anyone.

Excellent Sci-Fi In HD You Will Laugh, Cry & Be Amazed!
Review created: 09/04/06

Yes, you will laugh, cry and be amazed by this movie based on the little show that could. One of my favorite shows ever and it only lasted a season - not a complete seasons since the Fox did not air all of the episodes ):

After the Earth was depleted of its natural resources other planets were terra-formed to sustain life. Like on Earth, the planets were divided by money and politics. The "haves" are tech advanced, the "have nots" live in pioneer condition - hence the western themes. The Alliance (core planets government) decides to unify all planet but the outer planets do not want to be under their control. So civil war breaks out. Guess who wins.

So a couple of Browncoats (as the rebels were called) and crew fly a Firefly transport ship called Serenity. Even though they are thieves, scavengers and malcontents they are still the heroes.
The Firefly series ended with the crew having found out that little River is actually a weapon made by the government.
Serenity is set months after the series left off. The crew is still doing their thing - robbing payrolls, dodging the Alliance who is looking for River and trying to keep Serenity in the air.

The special effect have always been incredible - even the series was known for the great chase scenes. The ship is a marvel. In HD they just POP!
Excellent writing, witty and smart. Love the actors, all of them - well, maybe not so much the Inara character, she always bugged me for some reason.

Only thing that could have made it better was the series' theme and the Ballad of a Man Called Jayne were not in movie. Hey, and Jayne's hat would have been cool too.

Highly recommended even if you have not seen the series. This movie stands well on its own. But check out the series, it is excellent!

Serenity - Joss Whedon's Firefly Soars onto the Big Screen
Review created: 10/04/05
by: dragonfire88-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
Cast, characters, story.

Cons:
Some characters under used. Two things happened I didn't like.

In the fall of 2002, Joss Whedon s newest show, Firefly, began on Fox. Unfortunately the network didn t give the show a chance, airing episodes out of order and cancelling it after only eleven episodes aired. Firefly - The Complete Series was released on DVD, selling better than expected, which helped keep the characters and stories alive. Whedon and the cast were able to return and make Serenity. Since Serenity was a continuation of Firefly, I want to provide a little bit of background information before specifically discussing the movie. 500 years in the future, Earth could no longer...

Serenity --- Joss Whedon brings Firefly to the big screen
Review created: 01/10/06
by: three_ster-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
acting, some great special effects, good story

Cons:
not a satisfying ending

Most people started noticing Joss Whedon back when he worked on Buffy The Vampire Slayer. When he created the television show "Firefly" his following grew even more. But, his television series didn't end up lasting very long, and lost with it were the stories of the main characters. That was until Whedon was given the go-ahead to film a movie based on the series. That movie is Serenity, and it brought the story of a group of rebels in the future to a wider audience. The reason the film ended up being made, was that the DVD sales and cult-like following of Firefly even after it was cancelled...

Serenity Recipe: One Part Buffy's Fighting, One Part Angel's Nobility and Mix In Firefly
Review created: 09/30/05
by: Joubert -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Good effects, decent plot and acting...

Cons:
...but people unfamiliar with Firefly may not enjoy the film as much

Combining the non-stop action of his beloved Buffy with the noble sentiments from Angel, Joss Whedon finally brings his outer space western to the big screen in Serenity. Based on the 14 episode Fox series called Firefly that aired in 2002, Serenity was a labor of love for one of Hollywood s hottest writers. Even after the show s cancellation, he began calling in chits, finally bankrolling his vision with $40 million of Universal s money. Building on Roddenberry Hollywood legend holds that Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry originally pitched his television show as Wagon Train In The Stars ...

Serenity... or more likely, anything but!
Review created: 10/08/05
by: captaind-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
Action-packed, funny, great cast and SFX, quirky style

Cons:
Some scenes too drawn out, perhaps a touch overlong
Serenity might be the name of the spaceship but it s anything but fitting for this film! Based on the short-lived but much loved cult TV sci-fi series Firefly and featuring the same Director / Writer (Josh Whedon) and actors, this is a science fiction film with a rather different feel to it than most. I ll admit now, I ve still never seen more than a couple of five-minute clips of Firefly, so I went in with no preconceived idea about what it would be like. (My sister-in-law is quite a fan however, and she was happy with the film so this bodes well if you are a fan.) The ship Serenity is a...

Joss Whedon's Serenity ~ Hopefully getting the recognition it deserves!
Review created: 10/03/05
by: dramastef-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
Too many for a mere 15 words

Cons:
I'm still worried that Firefly virgins won't appreciate it as much

Ok, a pre-review warning: My rating and opinion of this movie are highly colored by a) my admiration for Joss Whedon and b) my love for his cancelled series, Firefly. As I was watching the movie, I initially tried to view it as someone who had never seen an episode of Firefly would view it. It didn t take long for me to realize the futility of that exercise, lighten up and just plain enjoy the movie. * * * * * A little bit o background * * * * * Serenity is the feature-length film based on Joss Whedon s cancelled series, Firefly. It takes place five hundred years in the future, after humans...
