Secret Window (2004, DVD)

What I could call a psychological suspense akin to old Alfred Hitchcock films, "Secret Window," is based on a Stephen King novella of a different kind.

The story begins with a sloppy avant garde writer, Mort Rainey (Johnny Depp), an alcoholic & cigarette addict because he feels like his life's out of his own control: after his wife (Maria Bello) betrays & leaves him. He quits writing. He acts depressed & as if he feels worthless.

While Mort is super strung out, showing signs of falling apart emotionally, a weird Southern stranger, (John Shooter), claims that Mort has plagiarized one of his stories. Since Shooter seems like an ignorant buffoon, it's hard to imagine he can even spell let alone compose a publishable story. Shooter is way beyond the edge of deranged & attempts to drive Mort to the brink of insanity. Mort's wife is equally crazy-making as she, along with her adulterous lover, try their best to press Depp into an unwanted divorce to be finalized.

Rainey descends into insanity with such maneuvers that he takes me into the darkest recesses of his character's mind. Like a Hitchcock film, King's focus is on the characters themselves instead of his usual special spooky effects. Thus, this is a thriller with a totally surprise ending. A must see. Bring popcorn.

Very good movie, would definatly recommend to other buyers. Plus hey, it has Johnny Depp. So where can you go wrong.

i purchased this movie for a psychology project. i was assigned to watch the movie and relate it to psychology in some way. i loved the movie, i thought it was great. johnny depp did a fantastic job and the suspense kept the audience's attention throughout the movie.

It was listed as Used, but in excellent condition. It arrived just as advertised. Seller has good feedback and the postage was reasonable so bought it from her. I check the feedback of potential sellers and if the score is less than 98% I avoid them and also sellers that charge outrageous postage fees.

A much better King movie than most. Many of King's books don't seem to translate well to the screen, but this one does nicely. You will definitely enjoy it.

I love it when Stephen King writes a novela and then they turn it into a movie...like Shawshank Redemption. I think they make better movies than his full length novels. I was surprised by how good this movie was anwas a little ashamed that it has taken me so long to see it. I am one of Johnny Depp's biggest fans and I loved this movie. It is great to see him in a movie that he can speak in a normal voice, with no English accent or strange voice. He was wonderful and I love the fact that his wife's name is Amy. :)

Well, the DVD wasn't for me. It was a gift for my boyfriend. But it was new, and i liked that about it. Also, it was very cheap. =] Thank you.

I think this is one of his best "Dark" movie. He is so intense and the story line is just easy to follow and still be intrigued by.

Secret Window is so bad it will actually make you angry. The acting is mediocre, the pace slow, and the plot absurd. You will have this "thriller" figured out in 15 minutes. Slam a window on your hand which will be much less painful than this movie and will certainly waste less of your time. This movie is an absolute stinker. Watch it at your own risk.

I may be bias, as I am a huge Johnny Depp fan, but once again, he pulls off a role not just anyone can play. The psychological thriller is a great movie, especially as a suspense with an ending that may surprise you.

Love this movie! It has all of the qualitites of Johnny Depp's acting skills that I love. You will laugh and fall in love with Mort Rainley's outrageous anticts. The storyline and ending is a great one. Highly Recommended!

I still have never received this item. I contacted the seller twice to report it and they were supposed to be tracking it and letting me know. I never heard another word. It was only $5, but it is the principle of it. I chalk it up to experience.

This film is really serious until almost the very end. Then when the twist happens I thought is was actually kind of funny. make sure that you watch the Cut out scenes at the very end. They really actually pull the film together for me. I will not give away the twist, but you will really like it.

Great movie! I like Stephen King a lot. It's not as good as The shining or It but it is a movie that I like to watch over & over again!

My daughter wanted this movie for her birthday. This movie has many twists and turns and the ending is totally unexpected. I recommend this movie for older children. A must see.

I bought this movie because of Johnny Depp, I love anything he is in! This movie had it all: suspense, drama, a little humor, and even a twist you might not be expecting! If you are a fan of Johnny Depp you will want to check this one out.

Secret Window is a very good film with Johnny Depp as the writer and Maria Bello as the ex-wife both are really good. This film has some many twists
and turns it is hard to figure who did it.

I like everything about my purchase. I am trying to collect all of Johnny's movies, and this was a great purchase for me because the price was great and the quality of the item is outstanding. I decided to buy it because it's one of Johnny's best performances - odd, yes - but he pulls it off with such finesse that we actually buy the fact that he is a deranged writer. :)

I loved this movie! JD's acting ability completely caught me unawares as to how this story was going to proceed. His skill combined with the rest of the cast and the crew on this movie made for a delightful and shivery adventure.

Not everyone agrees on this movie, that's for sure. But I think it's a work of art.

I had high hopes for this film. I mean based on a Stephen King novella and starring Johnny Depp and John Turturro it HAS to be good, right?

The story is so predictable you figure it out from the start - and if you have read or seen Dark Half then that's all you need to know. Maybe because I figured it out early on the film felt excruciatingly long and slow. Not scary at all.

Stay away from this one. For Johnny Depp watch Sleepy Hollow, for Turturro watch O Brother Where Art Thou and for Stephen King - weel, there are so many! Carrie, The Shinning, The Shawshank Redemption just to name a few.
