Great Family Entertainment~Extremely Funny Movie~Worth watching more than once. This movie is a throw-back ij time, to the 50's era.
Josh Lucas (of "A Beautiful Mind") gets a phone call telling that his two great-uncles have been in an accident. Young Haley Joel Osment is literally dropped off with great-uncles Michael Caine and Robert Duvall by his mother Kyra Sedgwick. The two are supposed to have a huge fortune somewhere on their farm in Texas and Sedgwick, along with several others, have been trying to find the treasure for years. Osment seems out-of-place at first and his two uncles appear to be cold-hearted. Duvall is seen sleep-walking and acts like he is sword-fighting. Osment has never seen anyone act this way before and he becomes curious. He finds a photo of the beautiful and exotic Emmanuelle Vaugier in the house's tower and his want to know the pasts of his uncles'. Caine tells Osment at the start of World War I the two uncles joined the French Legion, fighting with the Allies. Caine tells of Duvall's love for Vaugier when he was a young man. She was also wanted by an evil sheik (Adam Ozturk) The story concludes and Osment finds out how the two got their money. "Secondhand Lions" -an old lion that Duvall and Caine buy-is one of those movies that makes you wonder why hollywood does not produce more like it. Give this one "Two Thumbs Up"
Five Stars *****

 Awesome family movie!
Review created: 07/05/06

I absolutely loved Secondhand Lions, as well as my children. I considered this movie to be a family movie. There's a couple of curse words and 'fantasy' violence (no blood, etc)but nothing that needs more than the PG rating it has.

The acting is superb which you would expect with veteran actors Michael Caine and Robert Duvall and Haley Joel Osment has proved to be an experience actor.

There's nothing about this movie I didn't like:)

Secondhand Lions Is Damn Near Perfection
Review created: 04/26/04

Pros:
Just excellent on every level

Cons:
Not one damn thing

I try to catch movies while they're in the theater as much as possible, but once in awhile a great one slips by me. Luckily I did finally catch this one on DVD. Man I wish I had seen it on the big screen. This is one of those stories where old-meets-young and they both learn something. Not a new premise at all, but done ever so much better here. Haley Joel Osment is the young lad in this case. His mom is a gold-digging idiot who drops him off at her great uncles' house.. uncles who have been missing for 40 years and only just resurfaced. Rumor has it they are hording millions. Osment is...

Michael Caine and Robert Duvall are Brothers in Secondhand Lions

Pros:
Cast and plot. Return of the King trailer

Cons:
Something disturbing happens at one point

I first saw a preview for Secondhand Lions a few months ago when I went to see a movie. I thought it looked like it would be good and I decided that I wanted to see it. I was finally able to go see it. I did enjoy the movie. I was also happy to be able to see the trailed for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King before the movie. Walter was a young teenage boy who was taken to stay with his two great uncles, Garth and Hub, by his mother Mae in the 1960's. Walter didn t want to stay with them, but Mae told him how the two hadn t been back in Texas for long and how they were supposed to.

Secondhand Lions - great movie for the whole family
Review created: 05/19/05

Pros:
Artisic enough to be interesting. Offbeat humor. Great casting.

Cons:
I wouldn't change anything.

I absolutely adored Secondhand Lions. I laughed. I teared up just a bit (though not much). And, the movie was creative and campy enough to be interesting but not annoying. By the time the film was over, I felt like I had been royally entertained. The show opens with Mae dumping her pre-teen son on the steps of her great uncle s farm in Texas. She says she is off to college, but she is chasing men (again). Plus, she s heard that the old uncles are filthy rich, and she thinks that Walter may locate the loot. In any case, she s ready to be shed of her responsibilities for a while, and when...

Secondhand Lions Goes Out with its Boots On
Review created: 09/22/03

Pros:
Nice atmosphere, good backstory, the three guys build a nice bond.

Cons:
Someone hits the kid (not the uncles), parts of the trailer got cut.

With Haley Joel Osment's awkward transition into puberty, his latest feature Secondhand Lions had the potential to make or break his career. In my eyes, it really didn't do either of the two - it just kind of "was". Even those who live vicariously through the achievements of their Hollywood idols probably would still hesitate to place any bets on Osment's future based on what they saw here. Thankfully, Secondhand Lions is an engrossing enough experience that you won't be thinking about all that throughout the movie. Maybe just in a few spots. Osment plays the role of 12-year old Walter, a kid.

Secondhand Lions ---- With Haley Joel Osmet, Michael Caine, and Robert Duvall
Review created: 08/08/06
by: three_ster-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
the acting to a point, the two Uncles (Caine and Duvall)

Cons:
the writing, no real drama, story dragged at parts, under-developed storylines

Secondhand Lions had all the intent of being a "coming of age" story for a young boy named Walter. Walter has been dragged around by his mother, often ending up leaving him someplace while she goes off to search for a man. He has grown tired of the same routine, often catching his mother in lies about what she claims to be doing. In the latest occurrence, she has decided to leave Walter with two Great Uncles presumably to go attend classes at a school. At least this is what she says, but we will soon find out that it is just another one of her lines. Leaving him with the two Uncles, she...
