  good coming of age movie
Review created: 07/11/08

I had seen it before and wanted my wife to see it. I think everyone endures prejudice in one form or another. It touched on the very hypocrisy of humanity, even white against white. I had seen it with my sons many years ago. I think more people should see it and learn to be more tolerant on many more levels.

I loved this movie when it was in theaters. Because it has so many applications beyond school, I wanted it for my video library.

I remember seeing this movie years ago. I loved it then, and still love it. Doesn't matter how many times I watch it, I still feel the same tension and indignation about how the main character is treated because of his religion.

beautiful film- introduction of today's hollywood boys
Review created: 01/13/08
by:

OK, so right away, have to disclose that i was an extra on this shoot when i was twelve or thirteen growing up in Boston. My perspective is a bit askew, with nostalgia and personal bias. But re-watching this movie on television the other day, a flood of memories-- and the justification for my film school education-- return. At the time (early 90;s), the period (1955) elements were more impressive to me than the subject matter. However, that period setting also distracts at some times. The sceenplay is written in a very "on the nose" television time constrained style ... one of those "not real" sugary movies that is a very direct vehicle for the message, not much in the way of character or extra story development. This is an amazing ensemble of actors, that compete for the very few words available. But the film is effective nonetheless if you're a fan of period reproduction, and the visual escape of watching an idealized American innocence and beauty that does not exist to us today; but whose subject matter does. odd juxtapositioning. But for true hollywood-craft production value, this is a great achievement by the best of that day's (early 90's) period re-creation technicians. Jeanine Claudia Oppenwall, production designer (very period affective, noted for other period pieces such as Sean Penn's "Paper Moon"; Cinematographer Freddie Francis (who shot many of the Hammer Studios gothic horror masterpieces of the 60s and 70s); Ann Roth, classic american-- the Ralph Lauren of costume design--giving us Brooks Brothers, well tailored men. then there's Robert Mandell. A man who, I'm told, is a very visually focused director. From my perspective, looking AT him, he looked like a frizzy haired aging jewish wizard. We know most of the great names that made and were made by this film. But Robert Mandell doesnt really stick out to anybody as one. I think the film could have been recieved much differently with a stronger name behind the lens. However, from behind to in front of the camera, an almost unbelievable ensemble of great filmmaking/acting talent. A dream team, if you will. However, the film Has sort of a high school play quality about it... as if the actors and sets are all working to convince us of the inaccessible fantasy land of the 50's. this is a cute, but ultimately negative, annoyance. the film narrows its appeal this way, as more a harkening to yesteryear for baby boomers; rather than a powerful strong dramatic vehicle for some very talented up-and-coming actors of the day-- true actors. Alot of the talent was New York cast, as I recall; so right away the movie projects that mature and sophisticated sort of "east coast stage actor" hollywood movie feel. But their script is sort of a cotton candy version of Dead Poets Society. Like, combined together into one film, the two would have made a powerfully dramatic, visually stunning classic. View School Ties as a beautifully nostalgic painting. A shame, as I remember quite a lot of great stuff; some shot and some in the script that never made it to the screen. Brendan Fraser MAKES this film believable; the only actor who's not stuck in the trap of convincing us that its 1955. Regardless, the film does tackle anti-semitism in a mass market way. Then head of Paramount, Lansing, had been pushing this film through development for years, no doubt the reason for its commerical release.

I had seen this movie years ago and when it came to mind one day, I decided to try to find a copy of my own. The actors were in their early years and they do a very commendable job. I received it in good condition and am very satisfied.

It shows you some of the stuff that still goes on in schools and colleges today. People are pretty cruel sometimes when it comes to being predijest against someone because of their religion or skin color.

See Affleck and Damon at their Greenest in School Ties

Pros:
Great cast, great story, fantastic performances

Cons:
depressing

School Ties (1992) is really a pretty fantastic movie that helped begin the careers of several young actors. Ironically, Brendan Fraser stars in the leading role as David Greene, a Jewish teen from Pennsylvania who gets a scholarship to a pre-Ivy league high school so that he can play quarterback for their football team. Matt Damon comes second, as he stars as Charlie Dillon, a jealous rich brat who tries to have David expelled from school. Ben Affleck has a constant role in the film, yet with very few lines. He is a just another student at the school. My, how things have changes for the...

School Ties shoes anti-semitism in higher education
Review created: 03/16/07
by: joshua94 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Good story

Cons:
Negative topic

This movie stars Brendan Fraser as a Jewish student in a anti-semetic 1950 prep school for gifted students. It is an all boys school, starring Matt Damon, Ben affleck and Chris o'Donnell. He hides the fact that he is Jewish from his peers because he is poor and doesn't want to lose an opportunity to go to this school on scholarship, and his buddies always make Jewish jokes that are full of hatred and anger. This movie is awful in the cruelness, especially when the other kids find out, but it sends a message that there is no place for hatred and ignorance in society. You feel the sadness of...

  Educational and worth watching...

Pros:
Great story-line, good actors

Cons:
Will make you emotional

I have been an adoring fan of Brendan Fraser since his first appearance in the film, "Dogfight." I enjoyed every bit of his performance in the 1992 movie "School Ties." I love this movie so much that I've watched it over 20 times. In School Ties, Fraser's role is the Jewish football star named David Green. David Green is the son of a coal miner who later learns the hard lessons of life when he is given the opportunity to attend a very well-established parochial high school. This movie educates us about the prejudices of the ignorant. Greene was trying to concealed his Jewish heritage but it...

  Powerful and to the Point

Pros:
Was very realistic and showed how people can become bigots in a second.

Cons:
Very sad movie

I'll just start off by saying that Brendan Fraser is my favorite actor. Not only is he good looking, but when he plays a role, he makes it seem real. That's especially the case in School Ties. Now, almost everyone starts off their epinions on movies with things like "I though this movie would be boring by the cover" or "if someone hadn't of recommended this, I never would have watched this". That is the case for me, but I'm glad I did decide to get. it. The movie is set in the late 1950's. David Greene (Fraser) has been accepted to an elite school where almost all of the graduates move on to..
