  Just wonderful.
Review created: 05/04/08

Endearing and unique. Great for a light-hearted night. Humor is witty. Not your stereotypical view of Asians or lesbians. Watch it if you want to: get a peak at the Asian culture, laugh, see something different.

cute romance, cultural commentary, even if the dialogue is a bit trite sometimes between the two romantic partners.

  Wonderful and Touching Movie

Don't just think this is a lesbian movie. It goes well beyond that to show the growing and changing relationship between a mother and daughter who are not that different. Both wanting to be free to love whom they want but bound by tradition and old world views. Joan Chen is beautiful and wonderful in the role of the mother. I wish she was in more movies.

Yes, it's a lesbian love story.

Yes, it's an Asian American movie.

While these descriptions may be exciting and scintillating, it's a fun movie that transcends those labels. Michelle Krusiec and Joan Chen each deliver fine and enjoyable performances. Chen and Krusiec play mother and daughter, both confronting the cultural stigmas associated with the loves they have chosen.

Don't let the labels steer you away from a fun and entertaining movie. I really enjoyed this film.

Great purchase ! DVD arrived on time, Quality excellent, Will do business again in the future. I love this movie because it about Asian-Americans and native Asian which represent both sides of the world. Also the most important thing is present the meaning of friendship and love no matter if your straight or gay.

  Asian Same-Sex Partners, Who Knew
Review created: 09/05/06

Pros:
Performances by principle actors.

Cons:
Movie seemed disconnected in some places.

There s a lot to be said for channel surfing; you never know what you might find in between Paid Advertising and the weirdness that accounts for a lot television these days. In my case I ran across a perfectly charming movie about budding, charming love story called Saving Face (2004). Written and directed by new comer Alice Wu, Saving Face follows a brief period in the life of a young first generation gay Chinese-American doctor (resident), and her mother. The former struggles with her sexuality and the latter tries to find her place in American society after her husband dies and her father..

(LGBT Pride) W/O: High Three's for SAVING FACE; a Saving Grace or Two Picture..
Review created: 06/03/05
by: macresarf1 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Complex, multi-generational family comedy-drama, accessible to general audiences. Cast. New Star: Lynn Chen

Cons:
Budget-restricted production values. Some humor and meaning lost in the translation. Predictable developments.

In SAVING FACE, first time Writer/Director Alice Wu has created an engaging comedy-drama in what may be soon known as "The New York Ethnic Lesbian/Conflicted "If-She-Will-Marry" Sub-Genre." A Big Tent of the full troubled-wedding genre might include ANYTHING BUT LOVE, HAPPY ACCIDENTS, THE JOY LUCK CLUB, MAMBO ITALIANO, MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, WHAT'S COOKING? WISEGIRLS and KISSING JESSICA STEIN, etc. No doubt too predictable in certain areas, SAVING FACE has plot twists and insights which make it entertaining and worthwhile. Its great strength is that it fields a competent cast and tells a...

"One Billion Chinese People... One Degree of Separation"
Review created: 06/30/06
by: aeoluscmc -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
humorous, likable characters and situations, a few surprises near the end

Cons:
seems to be trying to decide what type of movie it is...

THE PLOT Wil (Michelle Krusiec) is a young Chinese-American woman who suffers the usual clich s although she s a successful surgeon, her mother (Joan Chen) keeps trying to set her up with nice young Chinese men, not knowing, or not admitting that her daughter is actually a lesbian. Meanwhile, breaking new stereotypes, her mother, a widow and single-parent for many years, becomes pregnant. Since she was originally living with her own aging parents and refuses to divulge the identity of the father, she has no choice but to move in with her grown daughter. Having a new girlfriend herself, the...

  Saving Romantic Comedies for Minorities
Review created: 07/13/06
by: tate22 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
great look at minorities, light and fluffy, meaningful, wonderful performances

Cons:
some racist comments about african-americans may turn people off, kind of predictable

I've not seen a super amount of lesbian romantic comedies - something I believe there should be more of. It's irritating that movie studios deprive gays and lesbians of comedies and romances they can relate to. It seems like any story told about these orientations are heavily dramatic and steeped in stereotypes and whatnot. Saving Face is a refreshing romantic comedy. It centers around a young Chinese-American surgeon woman named Wil in residency. She lives a workaholics life, heavily relied upon by the staff at the hospital barely getting any time to herself. She has her own apartment but is.
