This movie is just like the title, After watching it i felt like i should grab a pair of scissors and run through the house. I couldn't believe that this story was actually true and that someone went through these trials. A very scary glimpse into a world of control and psychoanalyzing where the bizarre just gets more bizarre. I truly enjoyed watching this movie and just stared at the credits with my mouth open in a dazed shock.

This movie has a great all-star cast. Anette Benning puts on one of her best performances I have seen. The movie in my mind was closely related to her other movie "American Beauty". It was odd, and great for someone with a somewhat twisted or different sense of humor. Absolute great story line, based on a best-selling novel. You will not be disappointed.

Dysfunctional family movies are my cinematic bread and butter. No matter how many I see, I m always up for yet one more. Having read and enjoyed Augusten Burroughs memoir Running With Scissors, I knew that the film would have family dysfunction galore. In fact, dysfunction on top of dysfunction with a little extra dollop of dysfunction added for additional flavor. What I inexplicably failed to take into account is Hollywood s tendency to sap every last bit of juicy goodness from high quality source material. You d think at some point I d learn. The film version of Running With Scissors begins.

Running with Scissors looked very promising based on the trailers for it. It is the story of a boy, (the author of the biography Running with Scissors Augusten Burroughs), growing up in a very dysfunctional home. Actors including Annette Bening, Brian Cox, Gwyneth Paltrow, Alec Baldwin, Evan Rachel Wood and Joseph Fiennes made this film on my 'want to see list'. The fact that it looked like a Wes Anderson film (Rushmore, The Royal Tennenbaums) made me want to see it even more. When circumstances in a film seem too outrageous or unusual to grasp, we tend to view it as something outside of ourselves. It is my opinion that a successful film possesses character details and events that we identify with that allows us into a film and creates a visceral connection and a deeper connection to the story. Every now and then, I look at the ePinions star ratings and I reread what they actually stand for. A one star product or movie is one that the reviewer is recommending a reader avoid. In my ten-point scale I usually rate things on, a 1-star is usually equivalent to anything from a zero to a three out of ten. "Running With Scissors" might barely pull off a 3.5/10 in my rating system, but it's a definite "Avoid It" for ePinions.
