  "ALL IN" - With Rounders!!
Review created: 01/23/08(updated 01/23/08)

Gives you an idea what you go through as a high stakes poker player. The Highs, the lows, the relationships that you make in this game is always at risk. Matt Damon is SOLID in this role as Mike. He gives up gambling for law school after LOSING his bank role in a high stakes poker game. Ed Norton is an absolute LOOSE CANNON!! Norton really shines in his role as WORM. VERY brilliant actor I may add. He steals the show in this movie with his character. John Malkovich is AWESOME as Teddy KGB!! a RUTHLESS card shark - VERY convincing. John Turturro and Martin Landau have GREAT roles also and round out this terrific poker movie.

If your a card player you can relate to this film on all levels. VERY well done.

Personal Rating: SOLID 8

Add it to your movie collection!!

Great film. Matt Damon's acting is clearly superb. I don't consider myself a film critic but do consider my son's taste in film to be right on target.
He suggested I purchase "Rounders" and I now see why. I also found Martin Landau and Ed Norton Jr.'s acting impeccable. Damon, Landau and Norton clearly stand out as equally talented actors and their talent is exemplified time and time again as they portray versatile characters in so many other films.

  A Modern Day Classic Movie
Review created: 05/08/07
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

When I think of current classics, this title certainly jumps to the top of the list! It's one of those movies that seems to get better and better each time you see it. If you haven't seen it, then get the DVD and watch it.

Immediately you will be entrenched by the cinemaphotography. The color and tone of the movie really sets the mood, as this is a movie about back room card games, and the players who are successful at beating them (Rounders).

Christopher Young did an unbelievable job at the musical score... the music really sets the tone throughout (of course this isn't something you're really noticing when you first watch it).

The dialogue is steller, as the writers did their research on this subject very thoroughly. There's plenty of references to some of the greatest poker players in the history of the game, from Doyle Brunson to Johnny Chan. Malkovich's performance is probably his most memorable. Matt Damon is at his best!

Yes, this is a great gambling movie, but the movie's undertone is more of preservering through adversity. It's also about owning up to your true passions in life instead of living by everyone's expectations. Therefore, this movie is a must watch for those of us looking for inspiration in the face of insurmountable odds.

It was everything you would expect to get from buying a DVD. It came packaged well and with absolutely no problems. No scratches, all of the inserts, and plays perfectly all the way through. Fast shipping time too! How can you go wrong with Rounders though!

  Great Movie

Loved the movie when it came out and wanted it to watch anytime I felt like watching it, usually before going to the casino. Couldn't find it in the stores anywhere so I figured E-Bay because they usually have anything and everything on there. Sometimes you can get it for a decent price but it's for sure that if you really want it and money is no object then you'll probablly end up winning it.

  Rounders Movie
Review created: 11/06/06

For anyone who loves poker this movie is a must have. I host bi-weekly poker parties and I just leave this movie playing in the background.

Even if you don't like poker or have never played it's still a great movie because you are sucked in to the drama of the characters. It is a start studded cast featuring Matt Damon, Ed Norton, John Malkovich and others.

I highly recomend it.

If you play poker, this is required reading!!

What to say about Rounders that hasn't already been said? It makes the perfect gift for the Poker player on your shopping list right after Doyle Brunson's Super System I & II and right before a plane ticket to Vegas or Atlantic City.

For starters, with 10x WSOP bracelet winner Johnny Chan making an appearance you have to think the movie has some credibility. For the non-player it still presents the story and the action in such a way that you can still follow along. For the seasoned player, don't worry... It doesn't dumb things down. Actually, it's a great movie to watch with your significant other (The girlfriend is portrayed as intolerant of his card playing... Your s/o will SOOOO not want to be like HER!!)

The best reason to watch the movie (aside from the great performances) is the fact that over the last 8 years, this movie has inspired so many people to pick up Texas Hold 'Em. If you were going to a Star Trek convention without seeing a single episode, you might be a little confused when people make references to the show. Do people REALLY make references to Rounders at a poker table?!?? ALL THE TIME... A few times catching a subtle reference to Rounders helped me pick up that the guy across the table from me was trying to pull some moves a la Matt Damon's character Mike McDermott... The most recent time was in the Poker Room @ the Excalibur in Las Vegas and before I start telling a story, let's just say the movie paid for itself 20x over with that hand alone.

Baseball fans love "The Natural" or "Field of Dreams"... Hockey fans like "Slap Shot" and "Miracle". "Rounders" is THE MOVIE for the Poker fans.

BID ON IT ALREADY!!!

Rounders Is As Good As A Full House
Review created: 07/02/00
by: chad8246 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Great cast with good poker scenes and finally some DVD extras

Cons:
Mol is wasted and the plot is somewhat predictable

There is no doubt that poker is experiencing a huge renaissance. ESPN just finished up with its 2004 World Series Of Poker coverage and the Travel Channel s World Poker Tour will be starting their third season soon. Both Bravo and Fox Sports have their own poker shows as well. With the star power of Matt Damon and Ed Norton and the focus of a growing sport, there is no doubt that if Rounders was released today, it would be a huge hit. Unfortunately, it was released about five years too early, which is unusual because Hollywood usually follows the trends rather than creating them. Regardless,..

The wheels on the bus go round and round...
Review created: 05/18/04
by: updateghost-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
Damon, realistic script, situation, and climax.

Cons:
Norton, and the fact that I'm getting sick of SGM's.

The last big poker movie to be released in the United States was Rounders, which some of my friends tell me is a popular topic of conversation among poker players, while other friends don t even mention it. In fact, most people don t even mention it. So I gather that it s not really so popular a topic. I don t see how you could really hold a long, drawn-out conversation about this film. It is indeed a good movie: You see it, you like it, and then you mostly forget about it, only remembering a few scenes that you particularly liked. Works like that. And what do we call these types of movies,...

  Poker: A Game of Skill
Review created: 02/04/08
by: lyoness913-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
Great cast, great story, exciting, great pacing

Cons:
None

I really don t care what anyone says, poker is a game of skill. I ve spent countless hours in front of five cent keno machines waiting to hit 9 out of 10 or even 7 out of 7. It may happen once in a very great while, but not very often. It requires absolutely no skill whatsoever, and it just requires that luck may hit your numbers. However, poker is a different story. Even if you play video poker, you have to have a certain skill set or know what you re doing, because you have to know when to hold em and know when to fold em. Tres cliche I know, and there are parts of Rounders that are fairly..

Rounders --- Matt Damon and Edward Norton make Poker Exciting Again
Review created: 01/06/08
by: three_ster-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
Damon and Norton, great supporting cast, strong film, good themes that are cyclical

Cons:
may be too much poker for some

Mike McDermott is a grinder. A poker player that takes his time at the tables, going for one big hand an hour when he has the cards, and protecting his cards all other times. His playing style is to slowly grind out the hands, taking his time, and playing with the goal being to just come out ahead at the end of the night. This is what he professes to be, but the habit puts him in a risky situation right as the film opens, as we find him sitting at a table with some Russians who don't mess around at the tables. Damon serves as the narrator, explaining how he has worked hard playing poker to...

What 21 Wishes It Could Be
Review created: 04/01/08
by: bilavideo-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
slick, thoughtful, with interesting plot twists and dazzling performances

Cons:
Like it's main character, the film struggles to be more than it is.

Is there a version of the auteur theory for actors? If not, there should be. Novice actors like to think they could play any part, take on any role. More often than not, this has led to some very earnest flops, what you'd expect if Batman were played by Carrot Top, or if the role of Gandhi were helmed by the guy who plays Mr. Bean. In Hollywood, the most effective actors are selling a character. They may play many parts but behind each one is a face that audiences recognize and get - even if the same actor is a lead here, support there, a hero in one film and a villain in the next. Jack...
