Before Tom Hanks won 2 Oscars for Best Actor but after Sally Field won her two Oscars as Best Actress, they made this movie together in 1988. It is a barrel of laughs with just the right amount of drama to make it great.
The story revolves around Lilah Krytsick (Field), who is trying to get started as a stand up comic. She is already a New Jersey housewife with 3 young daughters who make her happy. Her husband (John Goodman) keeps the kids after working all day so that she can do her stand up thing at the Gas Station Night Club. But he is not happy about it at all. He wants a wife who stays home and supports his career as an insurance salesman.
Lilah is not a fantastic comedienne until she meets Stephen Gold (Hanks). He is a flunked out medical student who is barely making ends meet in the comedy club. But he takes a liking to Lilah and helps her with some jokes that are appropriate for her. The unfortunate thing is that he falls in love with her; she almost falls for him too. But she stops and thinks about what she has at home.
The finale of the movie is a contest for a spot on "The Tonite Show with Johnny Carson." The best 10 regular comics at the Gas Station get to try out for the prize in front of famous judges. Although Lilah wants to compete, she has to explain to her husband and daughters why this is so important to her.
Thus the finale is the climax of hilarity in this movie. Watch out for Lilah especially. I have never seen Sally Field so funny.
This movie has a heart and a soul. You will feel much better after you have seen it!
