"You'll Be Gone With The Wind For Messin' With Dark Gable"

Pros:
Kane's nimble wordplay. Generally good production.
Cons:
A couple of cuts on which Kane thinks he's Keith Sweat.
When you take a second and add up all of the great rappers in history, there are always some names that get forgotten. Well, one in particular, anyway. Rakim and KRS always get mentions, and of course there's BIG and Tupac. You might even add Jay, Nas and Eminem to the list. But whatever happened to Big Daddy Kane? Commercially, Kane's probably the least successful of the bunch, but he might just be the most influential. The man born Antonio Hardy (no wonder he changed his name) worked his way up from toiling as the DJ for femme rapper Roxanne Shante to writing songs for Shante and Biz Markie.

Dark Gable in Full Effect...at His Own Expense
Review created: 03/15/07
by: balogun-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Music
Pros:
Some actually good romance cuts; lyrical skill still intact; some fun guest-featured tracks
Cons:
Outdated production; half the ballads suck; Kane not the battle rapper he used to be
It was bound to happen. With each album it was becoming more and more apparent, with songs like The Day You re Mine (Long Live the Kane); Smooth Operator, I Get the Job Done and To Be Your Man (It s a Big Daddy Thing); and Cause I Can Do It Right and the Barry White-featured All of Me (Taste of Chocolate). And then, it happened. When Big Daddy Kane released his fourth album in 1991 Prince of Darkness many fans were aghast at the sight of the front album insert. There he was, standing right in the center of the blue-hued background wearing a white suit, in front of a half-naked beautiful woman.

Prince of Darkness: How a legend can create a bad album...
Review created: 12/07/04

Pros:
Kane's beefed up wordplay and rhyming skills saves the album; A few great beats
Cons:
Bad production throughout kills the momentum; Too many bad tracks
Big Daddy Kane has been hailed as a legend in hip-hop, and rightfully so. Ever since his debut album Long Live the Kane, Big Daddy Kane has inspired a plethora of hip-hop's past and present to be just as charismatic, laid-back and loaded with punchlines. A lot of people have bit his style, so don't pretend it hasn't happened. Is his discography perfect? Far from it. Kane's got a lot of great albums, but he's also got a couple of weaker efforts. In my opinion, Kane's weakest album even to this day is Prince of Darkness. It's a shame that it's not even his fault. Track List
