Pros:
Good cast in fun, entertaining movie.

Cons:
None for me. Not for everyone.

I have enjoyed books and movies dealing with magic or witches. In 1998, Practical Magic, a movie about witch sisters was released. I've seen the movie several times since then and I still enjoy it when I watch it. The women in the Owens family have been witches for a few hundred years, usually treated as outcasts by the people around town unless they needed some sort of help. In addition to be witches, the women in the family had to deal with a curse that would cause any man they loved to die. Sally and Gillian were raised by their aunts Frances and Jet because their mother died not long...

Practical Magic: Some boyfriends you don't want back!

Pros:
Good story of sisters who take care of each other.

Cons:
May be objectionable to some on religious grounds.

The first of the Cullens family witches, Maria, was abandoned by her lover and so, in a moment of desperation, cursed any man who would ever be loved by a Cullens woman would end up dead. Well, it has been two hundred years and still the problem persists. Jillian (Nicole Kidman) and Sally (Sandra Bullock) play the latest generation of Cullens witches. They knowof the curse having been told of it by their two old aunties who are played by Stockard Channing and Diane Weist. Jillian has solved the problem of falling in love with any single man by sleeping around promiscuously. Sally, however,...

"Being NORMAL is not necessarily a virtue.. it rather denotes lack of courage"

Pros:
Performances all, especially Wiest, and Channing. Fun and harmless, endearing

Cons:
You need a sense of fun to appreciate. Bullock's bad wardrobe at times

This movie is a story of two sisters. One wants to be normal, but isn't. The other is more normal, but wants desperately to be something else. What makes it fun is that the family has a genetic kind of nose-twitching talent, (no one actually twitches)reminiscent of "Bewitched" that is passed genetically, and a curse accompanying their lives. What makes the movie good, in spite of the ridiculous premise, is the quality of the production, the directing, the screenplay by Swicord, based on a book by Alice Hoffman, and the performances of some outstanding cast members, and some good performances..

  A sleeping spell
Review created: 02/24/00
by: GwenK -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Gorgeous cast of strong women; stunning soundtrack

Cons:
Drunken driver screenplay that swerved all over the place

No magic in this drunken driver plot If I weren't a sucker for a happy ending--and Epinions would let me--I would only award "Practical Magic" a fragment of a star. Still, I can only in good conscience rate it a one-twinkler flick. You'd expect a bit more from Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, who co-star as the supernatural sisters in "Practical Magic." The two play Sally and Gillian Owens, the youngest in a long line of witches living in the present. The once-tight sisters part ways in adulthood. Gillian takes to the high life with parties and dark, mysterious men. Sally finds happiness in..

Practical Magic. It'll put a spell on you!
Review created: 02/14/08
by: talyseon -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
A stellar cast pouring their hearts out in a story about the power of love.

Cons:
The sanctimonious may loose the message of love and togetherness because of the word "Witch."

Practical Magic is the 1998 adaptation from the book by Alice Hoffman. Griffin Dunne directs. The Owens family are witches. From the time of the puritans, and the unsuccessful hanging of Maria, all Owens' women have been blessed and cursed; they are blessed with magic, and cursed that any man they love will die. The current generation are Sally and Gillian, played by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Their mother died of a broken heart shortly after their father's (inevitable) death. The generation above them are Aunt Jet (Diane Wiess) and Aunt Frances (Stockard Channing.) In the course of...
