For any Bukowski fan, this is a must read. It was his first novel for Black SParrow Press. Its good. Not great, but good, for Bukowski's standards. A good starting place would be Hot Water Music. Ignore the novel WOMEN. Bukowski is awesome. I am not smart enough to write a more detailed reiew than this.
Charles Bukowski isn't for everyone, that's pretty much universally agreed upon. Post Office is a good novel to start with, it can be read easily in a few nights and if you like the style Bukowski has more novels, short stories, and poems to keep you going for a long time. Some think he's a womanizing drunk, to some he's a deadbeat lazy bum, myself I think of the man as genius. "Factotum" is another good novel, as is "Women". All of Bukowski's works are for mature audiences, definitely not for impressionable teenagers. I give this novel my highest rating, 5 stars!
Bukowski is (was) a brilliant novelist and poet. Bukowski describes, in vivid detail, his 13 year experience working for the Post Office (along with other aspects of his life) with a great degree of humor. An easy read and never dull. Post Office was Bukowski's first novel.
I DISLIKED THE SERVICE. I PAID FOR EXPEDITED MAIL, AND WHEN I FINALLY GOT IT, SHE HAD SENT IT BY REGULAR MAIL. I GOT IT ABOUT 3 WEEKS LATER, AND IT WAS TOO LATE.
This book was refered to me by a friend. I had no idea who Bukowski was. This book is easy reading. It's things that happen in everyday life and it's a captivating book. I can say that this book has got me hooked and i'm reading and plan to read the rest of Bukowski's novels. It kind of reminded me of J.D. Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye". Highly recomended.
Bukowski misses the mark with this attempt at postal pathos. The book is a self absorbed account of the drudgery of postal work, the cliche of bad boss troubles and a typical "beat generation" preoccupation with all things libidinous, hedonistic, and egocentric. A poor man's Kerouac, without the prose or the profundity.
