Loved the CD! It's probably my favorite cd. This cd does not come with the DVD. Only 4 of these songs come on the cd with the dvd. The DVD is great, too!!

I bought this for the sole purpose of listening to John Mayer's song and instantly became a life long friend of Herby Hancock. I heard he was good, but I had no idea he was that good.

  Good for variety of performers

This doesn't feature Herbie Hancock, it features the other performers with support from Herbie. I bought it for the variety and am well satisfied. There is a video out showing the making of this album and I enjoyed that enough to buy it and knew what to expect.

I saw Christina Aguilera sing "A Song For You" with Herbie Hancock on the 2005(?) Grammys and had been looking for the recording on her CDs with no luck. I eventually learned it was on a Herbie Hancock CD and hunted it down immediately. Christina's vocal performance on this project is one of the best ever captured on "vinyl".

When you take the genius musicality of Herbie Hancock and pair it with unusual performances by some of today's finest vocalists and musicians, you get "Possibilities". This project is a true collaboration of "greats" but it is not for the casual listener. It is a very ambient work that either gets inside your brain (if you "get" it), or bounces of your ears (if you don't).

Not one to give much time to new and/or popular groups/singers, I was only peripherally familiar with John Mayer. Hearing him on "Stitched Up" was surprising, refreshing and not what I expected from him -- his opening song sets the tone for all that is to follow.

Annie Lennox and Paul Simon turn in exquisitely-crafted performances -- proving that a great voice only ripens with age. Sting's performance is remarkable because it sounds so like him and unlike him at the same time. If I were to hear just a snatch of it, I would be unsure whether it was his voice I was hearing. Unfortunately, there's just nothing one could do to "I Just Called To Say I Love You" that could make it compelling or even interesting. It baffles me why, of all Stevie Wonder's magnificent compositions, Mr. Hancock (or whomever) chose this clunker. In any event, the orchestration is pretty and minus Raul Midon's otherwise pleasant vocals, it could have been a nice instrumental. Joss Stone's performance is predictable and not unusual in any way, but it is good nonetheless. The last selection "Gelo Na Montanha" is a rich, ambient instrumental full of soft sweetness.

If you appreciate out-of-the-ordinary music, get "Possibilities".

The best cd you never heard of.

I first heard this cd when a guy left it in a cd player I bought on eBay.
When I lessened to it, it had all of my favorite artist on it and the tracks were as good as any the artist had released on their own cd's.

  Only one good song

I was really excited to get this CD because I heard "Stiched up" with John Mayer. When the CD arrived, I was severely dissapointed because it turns out that this was the ONLY good song on the whole album. All the other songs just sound like a bunch of famous names trying way to hard to be cool with herbie, but they all failed miserably with only one exception. Stiched up is a great song, it almost made the purchase worth it. I don't suggest buying this cd, just buy the single on iTunes or something.

CD Review: Possibilities by Herbie Hancock
Review created: 05/27/06
by:

Herbie Hancock probably best known as a jazz keyboardist and one of Miles Davis's sidemen has released his latest CD entitled Possibilities and it's more like a Musical Event than just another CD. Hancock describes the CD this way: "This is a real collaboration that we’re doing here. It’s all been decided at the session, a record without borders, woven like a tapestry with many colors. The possibilities are endless". Wow! I think he pretty much nailed it.

Hancock who through the years has been no stranger to crossing over to the world of popular music may have managed to out do even himself with his latest project.

Possibilities is an absolutely outstanding collaboration with a wide and varied cross section of world renowned artists like Sting, John Mayer, Christina Aguilera, Annie Lennox and even Paul Simon. The CD was recorded in studios all over the world face to face with each of the collaborating musicians and has a real international flavor to it.

One of the great surprises of the collection is the way each performer gives you something you might not have expected from them. Like the way Christina Aguilera, yes that Christina Aguilera, absolutely sheds her bubblegum roots and cuts loose on Leon Russell's A Song for You, track 3 on the CD, in a way that would make her idol Etta James proud. Awesome offering! Leading me to again realize we are, or do become more like the company we keep.

John Mayer also "Brings It" with some outstanding vocal phrasings on track 1 Stitched Up, which, when paired with Hancock's signature jazz funk sound, will remind seasoned listeners of those vintage Steely Dan days.

Not to be outdone or left out, Annie Lennox also turns in a very memorable vocal performance with an aching rendition of Paula Cole's Hush Hush Hush, track 5 on the CD, and how about Stevie Wonder himself doing a little harmonica work on I Just Called To Say I Love You featuring Raul Midon, track 9.

Even though getting up there in years, Herbie Hancock is clearly still challenging his creative boundaries and transcending categorization. Seemingly, like fine wine, only getting better with age.

Oh, and who's ever idea it was to put Johnny Lang and Joss Stone together on track 7, When Love Comes To Town in my humble opinion deserves some sort of genius badge. Truly magnificent.

The CD's title alludes to the fact that the possibilities are endless and they most certainly are when you get these "Super Groups" together on collaboration projects.

Possibilities has me hoping this is trend that continues. I'm lovin it! It's like a musical high when you get to hear some of the greatest artists in the world perform together in perfect harmony like they're in musical conversations.

This is a CD any music fan can and will enjoy totally irregardless of genre preference. It's just simply good music and a must have.

Every single song on the CD is awesome but if I have to pick a few the standout tunes are Stitched Up featuring John Mayer [track 1], A Song For You featuring Christina Aguilera [track 3], and Hush, Hush, Hush featuring Annie Lennox [track 5]. My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 6, Sister Moon featuring Sting. Admitting openly that I'm a huge Sting fan.

Herbie Hancock Presents The "Possibilities" Of Another Uneven Celebrity Duets Album
Review created: 09/05/05

Pros:
Damien Rice, John Mayer, Christina Aguilera, Carlos Santana.

Cons:
"I Just Called To Say I Love You".

Ahhh...the all-star compilation album. We've seen it quite often lately from the likes of Ray Charles, B.B. King and Santana. A legendary musician, years past their commercial prime, decides to place him/her/themselves back within charting reach by combining their talents with the best of what the new pop music scene has to offer. If I can be honest, I've not heard Charles' or King's attempts enough to render a decision, but the last two Santana efforts, while bringing Carlos firmly back into the light commercially, have been quite inconsistent affairs. The songs are only as good as the...

Three Years.........More like Twenty, since he made an album.

Pros:
<b>Hancock's</b> best work since <b>"1&1"</b>, should get at least 1 nomination for an award.

Cons:
<b>Aguilera's</b> tone of voice, The spoken-word styles of <b>Annie Lennox</b>.

Herbie Hancock now 60 years old, decided to make an album after a three-year touring stint with the trio of Roy Hargrove and Michael Brecker. Working with Starbucks of all things, to create a follow-up album to the eight-time Grammy award winning album "Genius Loves Company", seemed like a dream-away. Plus, who would have thought that the follow-up would be with Hancock? I didn't think so. Hancock called his Starbucks album "Possibilities", cause there were many possibilities in collabarating with some of the best up-and-coming artists and some legends too. The first song titled "Stitched Up".
