REAL DEPARTURE FROM PREVIOUS TITLES TOO COMMERCIAL
Review created: 05/01/08

Songs are very good and well performed - However this just doesn't sound like my favorite newer group U2. Its seems they departed their usual proud, and rightly so,songs from the heart and speaking their minds and instead opted for a very commercial sound and subject matter. This IS a good album, but I prefer U2 as there outspoken "this is how and what I feel like it or not" format, that is what first attracted me to this group. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OLD U2!

 Pop - U2
Review created: 07/07/07

As the name applies, POP is an album focused on techno and dance and less on politics and religion moving away from the arena rock sound that made the band popular. This record is a good listen but invariably will see more dust then play time.

 Pop my bubble
Review created: 11/10/06

I first heard songs from Pop when a friend of mine played some for me. I loved them instantly, and finally got around to getting the CD. The songs are romantic, sensual and poetic as well as smooth. Even though it's labeled Pop, it's still rock, it's still U2, it's still good. Trust me, if I thought it was schlock (like Beck's Sea Changes), I'd let you know.

 Underrated

Pop is among U2's most maligned albums. It is one of the lowest selling, despite the fact that it was released well into their career, and it is one of the lowest regarded by fans.

Part of the reason Pop is so often attacked is that it represents U2's foray into techno music. For a band which spent the 90s in experimental mode, Pop was just too much for many fans. When, in December 1996, the first single, "Discotheque", was leaked on the net (one of the first examples of internet piracy), the 30 second clip sent shockwaves through the fan community with many claiming that U2 had abandoned their rock roots. Nevermind that the track was one of U2's most popular (#1 in the UK and #10 in the US - their last top 10 hit) and contained some killer guitar by the Edge. The fact of the matter was that this album contained a lot of dance music and many bare-bones, rock-free songs.

Pop is U2 at their most inaccessible. Indeed, many songs from the album, especially "MOFO", are barely listenable. And the lyrics are as dark and abrasive as the music. But U2 accomplished something here that they didn't fully achieve anywhere else with the possible exception of Achtung Baby. They created an album that was a full experience. From the whooshing effects that start of "Discotheque" to the aching vocals of "Wake Up Dead Man", the listener is drawn into U2's world. And a desolate world it is indeed. Songs like "Discotheque" and "Do You Feel Loved?" seem inspired by infidelity and meaningless sex, while "If God Will Send His Angels" and "Please" deal with humans subject to harsh lifestyles. Bono's lyrics are some of the most bleak of his career, and the music compliments them. But, like the music, they are also some of the most powerful.

U2's Pop is not an easy or even an enjoyable album to listen to. But it is a huge success and a wonderfully encompassing experience.

 My favourite U2 album

I think that the Pop album is the best Bono and his band ever composed. It contains 12 different tracks and all of them give you an unique experience: from Discotheque, which opens the CD to Wake Up Dead Man. My favourite piece is Mofo, I think the most extraordinary US song of the late '90s. Other very popular songs are: Staring At The Sun, Miami and The Playboy Mansion. This album's worth the money: BUY IT!

 U2 makes a U-Turn with Pop
Review created: 05/09/02

Pros:
An extension of the electronic sound of Zooropa, great songs

Cons:
Miami, Gone, Discotheque, etc...

Pop proves that even the commonly believed worst U2 studio album is better than the best Backstreet Boys pseudo-attempt at music. Critics and fans alike had problems accepting U2 s new direction on Pop. But, in reality U2 first experimented with the techno-pop-electronica feel on Achtung Baby [1991] and perfected it on Zooropa [1993]. Pop is simply an extension of the exceptionally popular Irish band s new musical direction. So what exactly is U2? A band hailing from Dublin, Ireland and having played together for now about a quarter of a century, U2 is a mix of rock, New Wave, and pop music...

Looking for the Baby Jesus Under the Trash

Pros:
Juicy electronic-influenced rock music coupled with gripping (and sometimes haunting) lyrics.

Cons:
The occasional awkward lyric; conservative Christian listeners will be offended.

Ladies and gentlemen, here it is. My favorite U2 album. No, really. Okay, I know it sounds preposterous. After all, I'm the guy who likes an inordinate number of happy, well-adjusted Christian rock bands. So why, instead of any of a wide variety of faith-affirming albums from the famous Irish foursome, would I choose this techno-fied work of blasphemy as their crowning achievement? Well, for one thing, it's not all techno. And another thing - it's not blasphemy. At least not to these ears. Born out of an era during which U2 appeared to be questioning everything they stood for, Pop is a...

A few bright moments if you can weed through the junk

Pros:
Makes for great background music; you'll actually find a good song here and there.

Cons:
"Not offensive" does not mean the disc is terribly good, either.

I honestly thought U2 was finished when I first heard 1997's Pop. The disc came out after 1993's Zooropa, a disc which redefines the term "horrible." While Pop is an improvement over Zooropa, it still lacks the drive, immediacy and outright passion of such stellar earlier efforts such as 1991's Achtung Baby, 1987's The Joshua Tree or 1983's War. Pop, on the whole, is a pleasant enough disc with some pretty good moments, but it's not a great disc. Fortunately, this wasn't the last album from U2, and the band returned in fine form in 2000 with All that You Can't Leave Behind, a disc on which it.

Pros:
Several REALLY GOOD songs

Cons:
Some stuff that didn't work musically

Until 1997, I didn't listen to "new music." My favorite bands were Elvis, The Beatles, Simon

Listen As Hope and Peace Try To Rhyme...
Review created: 10/30/03
by: MattA75 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Please and Wake Up Dead Man are amazing, 3-4 other decent songs

Cons:
Mofo and Miami should be wiped off the planet

In the case of all too many great rock and roll acts who have great careers, there is the one blunder of an album that mucks up their nearly spotless resume. For Aerosmith, this is known as Done With Mirrors. For The Who, it's known as It's Hard. For The Rolling Stones, it's every album since Some Girls. For U2 however, they had enjoyed well over a decade at the top of their game. Admittedly, their sophomore effort October was underwhelming, but one could chalk that up to any number of things, not the least of which being the fact that maybe just maybe U2 cracked a bit trying to follow up...
