Nostalgic old movie, with Haley Mills. She was a Gem when she was a child and in the Movies. I always liked her and all her movies are worth getting for your kids or Grandkids.

  One of Disney's best movies
Review created: 07/08/06(updated 08/15/06)

If you think of Hayley Mills, you probably think of "Pollyanna" and it's little wonder since this is her best film and one of Disney's best too. "Pollyanna" is the story of a little girl named Pollyanna Whittier, an orphan, who comes to live in the little town of Harrisburg with her very wealthy aunt. Unfortunately for Pollyanna, nobody (including her aunt) really likes her much as first -- probably because she's always so happy.

However, she eventually becomes friends with several of the townspeople including a grumpy old lady who thinks she's always about to die and a crotchety old hermit by bringing some joy and happiness into their lives. In fact, she goes around the old town spreading smiles and happiness which spreads and helps improve their dull, joyless lives.

Meanwhile...Aunt Polly Harrington, the wealthiest person in the town named for her family, completely runs the town. Nobody dares oppose her nor contradict her. Even the minister is afraid of her and does everything she tells him to. But when a new orphanage is needed, Aunt Polly doesn't want to help much. Spurred on by the new camaraderie sparked by Pollyanna, the town rebels against her rule and the townspeople decide to take matters in their own hands, and they plan a bazaar to raise money. However, Aunt Polly forbids Pollyanna to go. But Pollyanna sneaks out anyway and helps lead the bazaar. While sneaking back into her room, Pollyanna suffers a horrible accident and her legs are paralyzed.

Pollyanna, always cheerful, becomes sad and depressed. An operation may help restore her ability to use her legs, but in her mental condition, she's not fit to operate on. In a scene reminiscent of "It's a Wonderful Life," Pollyanna sees how much she has changed the whole town and roles reverse: now, the townspeople come to cheer her up. Much improved emotionally, Pollyanna leaves Harrisburg, The Glad Town thanks to her, for her operation.

"Pollyanna" is one of Disney's finest films for the excellent story, wonderful actors, and the upbeat message. Sadly, while "Pollyanna's" message of trying to look for the best in life may seem a bit corny to us today, it's still a great message. Another positive message in the movie is Pollyanna's motto of "If you look for the bad in people you're sure to find it, so look for the good in them instead." I really enjoyed this movie and highly recommend it! Rated 5/5

  Nudity in a Disney Film?

Pros:
Great acting from the adults

Cons:
Story could have been fleshed out better

I m a little ashamed to admit I am finally seeing Disney's version of Pollyanna. See, the movie was partially filmed in my hometown. Growing up, I drove by the house used as Aunt Polly's home more times then I can count. Still, it was only as an adult that I got to see the film. Pollyanna Whittier (Hayley Mills) has had a hard life. Her parents, who were missionaries, have recently died, so the little girl is sent to live with her aunt Polly (Jane Wyman), a woman she has never met before. Polly is the only surviving adult heir of the Harrington family. As such, she is extremely rich. But she..

They're Your Children; What Lessons Do You Want Them to Learn?

Pros:
wonderful, wholesome, family movie

Cons:
a bit of overacting by the seasoned actors

Parents are funny. In one breath they whine about the terrible influences their children are exposed to, and in the next they are giving them money to rent Scream 2. They lament the evil ways of the world as their kids are in the next room watching violent cartoons and playing disturbing video games. Not me. When my daughter was very little, of course, there was always that idiot Mom that rented inappropriate movies for slumber parties she was invited to, but we stuck mostly to Disney movies; our favorite was Pollyanna. Pollyanna, made in 1960 and the lead role played by a young Hayley Mills,.

  The Original "Glad" Girl

Pros:
Hayley Mills, Jane Wyman - the DVD extras!

Cons:
Not a link with ANY reality!

When Walt Disney ran the company, he knew each of his employees by name. He took a hands-on approach to all of the projects on the lot. His influence was so strong, that decades after his passing (in 1966), some said WDP was being run by a dead man. As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth, we can be glad that he took his mission so seriously. He left a legacy that is a monument to family, kindness, animals, and love. And if sometimes he was mercenary (no one wins a lawsuit against Disney, just ask Annette), his business sense was coupled with a finger on the pulse of America. His...

I don't think this DVD looks sick at all.

Pros:
Extensive bonus materials. Nice keep case. Excellent restored transfer.

Cons:
Some may think content of feature is too sweet. But I LIKE it!

Ok so my title is absolutely presumptuous, and well...IMPERTINENT! However, this classic movie with a timeless message should be watched by everyone at least once if not owned. I have liked this movie since I was a wee little lad. Like most little boys I was not able to freely admit this. I kept my dark secret until recently when I pre-ordered this DVD from Amazon.com. I only expected the movie itself with a clean resolution that DVD offers as I already had the VHS. I was surprised by all of the extras this edition had. Since everyone is posting sterling reviews about the actual content movie.

Pros:
Quaint Americanna charm!

Cons:
Dated, but lovely!

I confess to adoring these older Disney films. They portray a time that I wish I could have experienced...the kind of age that is recaptured on Main Street USA in Walt Disney World. In this screen adaptation of Eleanor H. Porter's novel, Pollyanna, Hayley Mills won a special Oscar at the age of 14 for her performace of Pollyanna, an ever-optimistic oprhan sent to live with her powerful and wealthy spinster aunt. As lovely as she is cold to matters of the heart. In this heartwarming film, Pollyanna sets to changing the lives of everyone she touches with her 'look on the bright side' views and..
