THIS GAME WAS ONE OF THE FIRST REAL ADVENTURE GAMES. YOU ARE PITFALL HARRY TRY'ING TO RUN AND JUMP YOUR WAY THROUGH A DANGEROUS WORLD OF SNAKES,SCORPIONS,ALLIGATORS, E.T.C. WHEN THIS GAME WAS RELEASED 25 YEARS AGO IT WAS CONSIDERED REVOLUTIONARY,AND EVEN TODAY IT STILL, IS A GREAT DEAL OF FUN. OVERALL THIS IS A GREAT GAME THAT EVERYONE SHOULD PLAY AT LEAST ONCE.
This game is the Father of all modern-day platformers. Pitfall might seem repetetive to most, however, the challenges of the game keep you coming back for more time and again. Despite the graphics, back in the day they were stellar, as were most of the Activision lineup. If you own a 2600 or 7800, this is the title to get. You won't be disappointed. Hats off to David Crane!!

Pros: There was nothing like it before, and nothing to match it since
Cons: Repetitive, nearly impossible to fully map
Doubtless many thousands of people out there have been clamoring for a review of a 23 year old game for a defunct game console from a completely overhauled one-time titan of the gaming industry. Welcome to Pitfall!, Activision's singularly entertaining, maddeningly hard-to-complete video game for the Atari 2600, and arguably the game that put Activision on the map to stay. It's arguably THE game that put David Crane, its designer, in the Hall of Fame of video game design if one was ever created. He was as close to a rockstar as existed in the world of the early game systems, and for good...

The legend that started the adventure platformer as we know it!

Pros: A old school platform game.
Cons: A old school platform game.
"Crikey! Look at the size of them Crocs!" Pitfall was one of those rare games for the Atari 2600 that broke new ground for action back in the early eighties and it really helped the new company Activision (who were actually made up of ex-Atari employees mad about not getting any credit for their work) get on the map. Imagine a cross between Nintendo's Donkey Kong and Atari's Adventure, and you get David Crane's Pitfall! The game is simple, help the hero Pitfall Harry collect up to 32 lost treasures of the unforgiving jungle filled with deadly scorpions, quick sand, rolling logs, and lots more.

Historically significant, but so is Pong

Pros: Historically significant; good graphics; easy to find
Cons: Monotonous; not nearly as good as the platformers it influenced
Pitfall! certainly has its fans, and I'll be the first to admit this game really kicked off the side-scrolling platformer genre that hit its stride after the Atari 2600 was past its prime. Indeed, the road that led to classic titles like Super Mario Brothers for the Nintendo Entertainment System and Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis began back in 1982 when Activision released Pitfall. As revolutionary as Pitfall! was in 1982, however, it just hasn't held up that well. It's kind of like Atari's Pong -- a game that is credited with kicking off the video game revolution in the early 1970s,.

Before there was Mario, there was Harry

Pros: Innovative; action-packed; always fun & challenging after repeated play
Cons: No 1-Up's; trying to jump over those scorpions; makes me crave Combos
The Atari 2600 was fairly limited in its processing power as were the games in their memory capacity. There s an old adage that says limitation inspires creativity and that s certainly the case with Pitfall!. Here is a game that is leaps and bounds ahead of its time, making perfect use of the essential gaming elements: a story to drive the action; fun and challenging gameplay; various strategies to employ; smooth play control; and nice graphics and sound despite its confines. If all the games for the Atari 2600 were of this caliber, there might never have been a video game crash. PRESS FIRE...
