I bought it as a gift for a friend who said they'd like to have it. I didn't listen to it myself, but it came in great condition.

This is what PinkFloyd was supposed to be, the album that started it all. now understand that if anything PF did keep its signature... they are one of the MOST, if not the THEE MOST "ORIGINAL" rock band to date. they went from psychedelic to "space rock" to progressive to heavy to jazz to w/e if you ever tried drugs you'd know exactly why this album was such a MASSIVE hit during its day and should still be today

  Great Pink Floyd!

I bought this CD after watching the VH1 Classic on Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd. This CD definitely has that 60's psychedelic feel and sound, but the music and lyrics are really quite masterful. Although Syd leaving the band led to the emergence of Roger Waters as a songwriter, it would be interesting to see where Pink Floyd would be or would have gone had the original band stayed together for more than this one album. Great stuff, a must have for any classic rock and roller.

  A Classic

I first bought a copy of this album in the early 1970s in the U.K. It serves as probably the greatest example of psychedelic rock, and the greatest sampling of songs by the late Syd Barrett. It makes one wonder what a second album with Barrett would have been like. He's pictured with the band on A Saucerful of Secrets, but only contributed one song. As David Gilmour put it, Barrett was out of control, so they made a deal. Gilmour would tour and record, Barrett would sit at home and write the songs. Of course, it didn't work out that way. I can't name just one strong song on Piper; they're all strong. This album is a must, not only for Pink Floyd fans, but everyone interested in the psychedelic era of music.

Piper is one of the great 60's psychedelic albums and Syd plays the part of a madman perfectly through lyrics, music (and other strangeness). Pow R. Toc H. is probably the strangest song on the album and I would imagine that it is the one song here that scares everybody away. In reality, it's not all that strange and Floyd went on to do much stranger work (even without Syd) so don't let the other reviews turn you off to this masterpiece. Piper is a must have for those of you who dig 60's psychedelic Rock. 5 Huge Stars.

Piper at the Gates of Dawn: A Glimpse of a Mad Talent
Review created: 10/21/03
by: lambchops-- a member of Epinions and Lead in Music

Pros:
Good songs, great lyrics

Cons:
Sometimes a bit too bizarre

Once upon a time, in a land not so different from this one, there was this strange psychedelic band led by an equally bizarre genius lunatic. And so the story of Pink Floyd goes. Most listeners are aware of the band s 1970 s theatrical releases. It was during that decade that the London born band released four consecutive, outstandingly well received albums beginning with 1973 s Dark Side of the Moon and wrapping up with 1979 s The Wall. Songs from that era including Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb, Money, Another Brick In The Wall, and Time are classics. But years before the band...

Swimming in the icy waters underneath

Pros:
The sound of Syd before the 'cid hit home. The cornerstone of psychedelia.

Cons:
VERY 60's. Sounds dated and nothing like their arena rock days.

I'm sure I've brought this up a time or two before, but every band should have a story. That's something the musicians these days really seem to lack, especially when compared to their 70's predecessors. And when I say a "story", I'm not talking about the kind of mundane drama that losers like Nick and Jessica seem to generate. Probably the band with the biggest story would have to be Pink Floyd. Oh sure, Led Zeppelin had its black magic/dead drummer thing going, and Fleetwood Mac was essentially a five-person soap opera in a touring van, but Pink Floyd's tale was and remains unique in the...

The "Lime and Limpid Green" Side of the Moon
Review created: 07/28/02
by: fartzarellah -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Barrett's songs are charming, playful, and frightening, music and lyrics go together perfectly.

Cons:
Could do with less improvisation. Some states of mind you may not want to witness.

-------I WANT TO TELL YOU A STORY, ABOUT A LITTLE MAN------- Syd Barrett was the charismatic leader of Pink Floyd when they started out, being the main song writer, lead vocalist, and guitarist. The band scored a hit single with the song "See Emily Play" and went on to cut their first long player PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN in Abbey Road studios at the same time the Beatles were recording SGT. PEPPERS (1967). The psychedelic, art rock album garnered critical success for Barrett's song writing abilities and Alice in Wonderland/Dr. Seuss lyrics. Then it all came crashing down (actually, had been.

  I hate Pink Floyd
Review created: 01/08/08

Pros:
A psychedelic album that is actually very good!

Cons:
Syd Barrett went nuts sometime after this album and the band never recovered.

For the most part, I simply can't stand Pink Floyd. I hate everything about the band, in fact. The corporate hippy vibe the band radiates is distasteful, and I have absolutely no use for the minor-key dirges and inane lyrics that the band has trademarked over time. However, 1967's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is downright fantastic. One of the major problems with the album, however, is that it's a Pink Floyd disc and just doesn't fit in with the rest of the band's catalog. Those of us who have been tormented for years by classic radio stations that delight in playing Pink Floyd as often as..

Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Review created: 01/18/01
by: tinasamuels -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
poetic lyrics

Cons:
none

The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn was produced by Norman Smith and released on August 7, 1967. It was the first release in the career of Pink Floyd. The title comes from Syd Barrett's favorite book "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame. The piper at the gates of dawn was in the 7th chapter. Track One - Astronomy Domine (by Barrett) "...Lime and limid green, a second scene. A fight between the blue you once knew. Floating down, the sound resounds around the icy waters underground..." If a song could be in Technicolor, this would be the one. Very early work, yet typical of the sound of the..
