  Classic movie
Review created: 04/25/08

Two of my favorite actors in one movie, what more could you ask for. Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington were both fantastic in this movie. Even Antonio Banderas, whom I don't think is much of an actor, was good in this movie. It shows how something people don't understand can scare them and bring out their prejudice and bigotry. This is one of the all time classic movies and I would highly recommend it.

I'm a high school teacher and I use this movie in my classroom to address stereotypes and HIV awareness. I bought this becasue I was tired of having to continue to "check it out" from our library staff each semester. It drives me crazy to find a great purchase price but have to spend more on s/h than the movie cost itself but it's worth having my own copy.

I liked the way the story presented the young man with Aids, the attorney prejudice and leary at first, then succombing to the facts of the young man case, agreeing to represent him and finally becoming a friend. Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington and Anthony Banderas were excellent portraying their parts. Just a real good movie and a tear jerker. Friends recommended it.

  A touching Story

This was a very touching story and during a time when Aids was rarely talked about. In this movie a lawyer has aids and the firm fires him. He takes them to court looking for a lawyer to help him with his case as he is researching most of the information himself. A very well written script and plot.

  Philadelphia - Pride Write-Off
Review created: 07/20/04

Pros:
great acting, makeup, camera effects

Cons:
story a bit simplistic

My PRIDE entry this year is late, not entirely my fault. Netflix sent me the wrong DVD and then I had problems with my television. Please excuse the lateness of this entry. Check out Shannon s page - http://www.epinions.com/user-psychovant - for more entries. It s funny in a way that I thought this film was older than it actually is. I was surprised while watching it to hear the characters talk about events which take place in 1990, and even more surprised when I checked at IMDB.com and found that the film was originally released in 1994. This was the first film released commercially by a...

  Tom Hanks Triumph: Philadelphia
Review created: 05/20/02
by: tbrown -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
powerful subject matter; evokes strong emotions

Cons:
AIDS details not dealt with in depth

This movie, directed by Jonathan Demme and written by Ron Nyswaner, earned Tom Hanks a well-deserved 1994 Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Hanks stars as Andrew Beckett, prominent attorney in a high-powered, yet conservative, law firm. The story revolves around what transpires after Beckett is unjustly fired by that law firm. Beckett's firing does not stem from incompetence, as his employers claim, but from the fact that the partners of the company have discovered that Beckett has AIDS. Beckett decides to fight his unjust termination. After going to nine attorneys in an...

  Jonathan Demme s PHILADELPHIA (1993) Pride Write-off #2
Review created: 06/22/03
by: artbyjude -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
The story, the depth of characters, Hanks, Banderas and Washington

Cons:
As sad as a movie can get. Not everyone wants to see it.

I have been meaning to write this review for a very long time. But I put it off, knowing if I watched the movie , it would certainly make me cry, and remind me of many lost to AIDS. I know every line of dialog written for this flick, I know every scene. I have even watched it twice since I committed to doing this review, and I always , always, cry. In terms of Gay Pride, I can t help but hope PHILADELPHIA did some good in showing the right things to some of the people who needed to see it. I know for a fact that my ex-husband, (The John Wayne Fan) saw it (granted I threatened him with having..

Pros:
a fantastic performance by all

Cons:
the devastation of human life

Philadelphia is the heart wrenching story of a successful attorney (Tom Hanks) that is gay, contracts AIDS and is fired from his position at a well known and respected law firm and centers on the basis and bias of people viewing the gay life style and the AIDS virus. Mr. Hanks gave a stellar view of the devastation that is your life when faced with this killer. The attorney he hires (Denzel Washington), after many attempts throughout the city to obtain representation, is probably the first black WASP I have encountered. He and Hanks had previously been opponents in a low profile case -...
