The PENTAX DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 is a wonderful kit lens to purchase if you are new to the Pentax DSLR system. The wide-angle 18mm focal length is great for capturing landscapes and the at the longer 55mm end, it's perfect when wanting to get a little bit closer. The overall image quality of the photos are very decent for the price (and better than the Canon/Nikon kit lens) and is perfect for the casual shooter. Enthusiasts may eventually want to upgrade to better glass, however.
On the wide end, it suffers a bit from vignetting (which can easily be fixed via post-processing) and is more noticeable with a filter attached. It also tends to be a bit soft wide open - however, stopping down definitely helps with the sharpness, and contrast and clarity is evident throughout the zoom range. The lens is super lightweight and is perfect for a walkaround lens. AF is smooth and speed is average, although a bit noisy and can search in low light.
This lens also features the quick-focus system which allows you to manually focus even in AF mode. This is helpful for quick adjustments after auto-focusing on a subject. Build quality is decent for it's price and definitely does not feel too cheap. If you're new to the Pentax DSLR world and are wondering if you should pick up this kit lens, I would definitely recommend it as a great starter lens.

The quality of Pentax is very good in my opinion. I have the 28-80 and the 100-300 telephoto as well. I find the 18-55 is a bit slower when taking multiple shot type photo's on the AM-mode. The portraits that I have taken with this are some of the best work I have done! It allows just the right amount of light. I am enjoying this addition to my collection & the learning it is bringing! I would suggest you research this lens to confirm it is the right fit for your type of photo's to be sure you will not be out of your range.
This is a nice basic kit lens. It does a good job. I wish it was a little faster, say f 3.5 throughout, but for the price it does a very nice job. The pictures are crisp and the lens quality is quite good. I'm well pleased. I believe I got a little better quality than I expected.
I HAVE 8 PENTAX LENSES FROM 19MM TO 200MM AND SEVERAL PENTAX FILM BODIES,NOE OF THEM HAVE CAUSED ME ANY GRIEF. SO I boughT Dl2 with the above zoom lens. i find it very convenient in use with its best performance in the mid focal lengths. Colour is good and focussing adequate, Results are equal to Canon equivalent which I have experience of
Good lens to a fair price with prompt delivery. The lens is a standard lens fitting to a SLR camera I bought at ebay a few weeks ago. I am sure I will enjoy my new lens.
