Since HD DVDs are no longer made and players no longer produced - this is one of the FEW movies I would recommend actually getting on HD DVD for collectibility, quality, and exclusive extra features.
If you are a big fan of this movie - this (the HD DVD) may be one of the few collectibles from this movie that is sure to be a classic some day.
I went to the theater to see this independent film by director Guillermo del Toro 3 times.
I think the best description I saw before I went to see it was "A rated R version of Alice In Wonderland" & "A children's story that you want to see, but don't want your children to watch ... you may want to sleep in your child's bed after seeing it."
The character and creature design in this movie gives you chills ... yet it's not a horror movie.
The movie is in Spanish with English subtitles, but the story can easily be followed.
This film is an interesting history piece as well - placed near the end of the Spanish revolution.
This is definitely a movie worth seeing in high definition, whether it is HD DVD or BluRay. It is a well told story that provides for many movie seekers, whether it is action, fantasy, or plain old special effects- this movie has it. My only complaint is that it is only english subtitled(in BluRay it is anyway), it would have been nice to have had an english soundtrack available but otherwise it is still really worth seeing.
