  Ophelia Natalie Merchant 1998 CD

My favorite song on this CD is #5 minus the "ahhhhh" introduction. Listen to it and you will see what I mean. The whole CD is great to listen to all the way through at least once or twice. It does pass the line between boring on some songs but all in all it is a great CD. If you liked Tiger Lilly you will certianly like this one. I just love listening to her voice. It is just so enchanting. I think every one will have a favorite on this cd to listen to over and over again. I sure have!

Wonderfully dark with a hint of kindness!
Review created: 11/10/07(updated 11/28/07)

I love this cd because it is both dark and kind. The vocals are beautiful, great follow up to Tigerlily. Great artist, Natalie Merchant who dates back to 10,000 maniacs, as lead singer. Poetic like Emily Dickinson and musical like that old church organ. Particularity like the songs "Kind and Generous" "Ophelia" and "My Skin"

Not nearly as good as Tigerlily, Ophelia is decent but unfortunately it often swerves into boring territory. Natalie does have a wonderful voice and it tends to help offset some of the drab music but all in all Ophelia simply falls flat. 3 1/2 Stars.

I like Natalie Merchant, but not her best album.
The first song "Ophelia" has a very magical and soothing sound to it. I like this one a lot..it gives me chills up my spine.

Definitely worth listening to. Try it out.

Fine melodious cacophony. If you liked Tigerlily, you will like Ophelia. Same type of rainy day music that cheers you up and brings you down concurrently.

Horswispr's Death By Suicide: Natalie Merchant's "Ophelia"
Review created: 09/06/01

Pros:
pretty melodies; thoughtful lyrics

Cons:
excuse me while I reach for 20 Valiums and the bottle

I was captivated when I saw Natalie Merchant live in Berkeley several years ago. Her melodies are pretty, her sound is distinctive, and her lyrics are involving. The legacy of 10,000 Maniacs lives on in her solo work. The first time I heard the song "Ophelia," I loved it. It begins (and begins the CD) with a big minor chord, played on what sounds like a church organ, and takes you into the mind of a women who can save others, but can't seem to take care of herself. This woman positively drips profundity: Ophelia was a bride of God... In sister cells, the cloister bells, tolled on her wedding..

Natalie Merchant in Ophelia - Better On Her Own
Review created: 01/26/00

Pros:
Great lyrics, Great voice

Cons:
none

I got hooked on 10,000 Maniacs in college when one of my roommates would constantly play their CD's. She took me on a whim to a concert and I was more than impressed with the unique voice of their lead singer, a female named Natalie Merchant. After college, when I no longer had my roommates CD's to borrow, I purchased 10,000 Maniacs MTV Unplugged, and, while still moved by her voice, I did not find many of the lyrics pertinent to my life and times. One day, I heard Natalie was going out on her own and leaving the band, and thought to myself - "This will either fly or bomb" . Slowly, through...

Pros:
'Effigy,' 'Frozen Charlotte,' 'My Skin,' 'Ophelia,' 'The Living,' and 'Thick as Thieves.'

Cons:
'King of May,' maybe?

Ophelia is Natalie Merchant's sophomore solo CD. This recording differs from TigerLily in that the record label had greater control of the content and players than the singer would have liked -- leading to her break with Elektra. It also marks the debut of Graham Maby on Electric Guitar; he later goes on to record Motherland and The House Carpenter's Daughter with Merchant. Pete Yanowitz plays drums on TigerLily and Ophelia but was replaced by Matt Chamberlain on Motherland; Allison Miller subsumed Chamberlain s role on The House Carpenter s Daughter. Similar shifts with Natalie s guitarists .

Ophelia had many different personas; a bad singer was not one of them

Pros:
Brilliant lyrics, stunning vocals, and amazing melodies...it's a winner!

Cons:
With themes of dying, the dead, and contemplating death, it may not be for everyone.

Natalie Merchant's epic "Ophelia"; considered by many to be her best work. Sadly, it is considered by others to be Natalie Merchant on anti-depressants, a melancholy tribute to herself. That's not the case, in my opinion. I bought "Ophelia" as an 8-year-old. I bought it simply because I heard Kind and Generous on the radio. And I hated it. Let's face it, I was naive at 8 years, I only liked music at face value, never delving deeper into the meaning of lyrics. But really, what 8-year-old does? I can't name a single one. But enough of that. I eventually got tired of Kind and Generous and...

An irresistible beautiful fusion of poetry, music, & voice
Review created: 09/10/01

Pros:
Beautiful music and poetic lyrics- Miss Merchants voice is exquisite.

Cons:
Run for your bottle of prozac, this depressive, thought-provoking album is not for all listeners.

This is quite possibly my favourite CD, ever. Now, I have quite a CD collection and own anything and everything from Carmen to Metallica, and up till now I've never been able to pin point a "favourite" amongst my collection. Natalie Merchant's growth as an artist and performer since "Tigerlilly" shines through in this album. I was first introduced to Natalie Merchant a few years back, with the song "Wonder" from her album Tigerlilly, and although her talent was evident, I never really paid much attention to her. I usually, above all, prefer heavy, melodramatic music. The Tigerlilly album just.
