I am not new to the world of Sound and Video, but I am new to those items that give you one hell of a deal in the area of quality of build, sound, and features. This is what you get in spades with the Onkyo TX SR705. This is my first Onkyo product that I have bought, I own Pioneer Elite, Sony ES, and much higher end amps and preamps, but this will be the one that I will be using the most often. Why, you ask or might not ask or even care, but if you value supporting a product that outshines, outclasses almost anything in the under $1000 AV Receiver arena you will care on how you spend your money and what it will give you in return. the sound is very clean and detailed not harsh, this has to pump out more then the 100 watts per ch it is rated at because there is no end to volume. It is THX2, HDMI 1.3a, decodes all of the most up to date high definition soundtracks that is out there and that will be coming. It has the most sophisticated auto speaker setup that really works and is a breeze to use. Has both satellite radio system already setup for you to use if that is what you want to do. Their are so many features both sound and video such as up sampling DVD's to 1080 I and P etc. so many that it would take the entire review just to name them all. The main negative is the manual and how hard it makes to set this unit up if you use a none HDMI TV/Monitor. It can be very frustrating and was. But, I still will give it an excellent rating because overall it deserves it plain and simple!
I've owned this unit for a few weeks now and think it's a terrific unit. Lot's of power, flexibility and sounds excellent with both movies and music. I found it very easy to set-up having owned an Onkyo in the past and a Denon which had similarities with layout.
Nice features include the double bass setting when you set your fronts to full mode which gives the system excellent punch by channelling front speakers bass through the subwoofer as well. Also the various DSP settings operate differently yet effectively for different sources and 5 Channel stereo makes even the vcr material sound good.
Lastly, movies in Dolby Digital or DTS have never sounded so clear and spacious vs my previous Marantz and Denon receivers. If you get a chance to buy one of these units I recommend that you do... you won't be disappointed.
For the money, this is likely the best value on the market. I'd highly recommend this receiver to anyone, especially since there are preamp outs on each channel if you need to drive external amplifiers.
This receiver is easy to get playing... Almost without the use of the Owner's Manual. (If it wasn't for the HDMI inputs having to be named, this receiver would plug and play.) The remote is straight forward and the HDMI inputs make wiring very simple. The volume is adequate for a large listening room... The sub woofer should be powered... That's it.
This unit seems to do it all. However, for many folks, my self included, it may do to much. The unit assumes one understands the industry. There are many new advances in sound processing. This model is like a historical review of them all. It can be confusing with all of the audio options. Many of the audio output options are designed only for 6.1 to 7.1 playback. Since there is a very very limited source of material recorded for 6.1 and 7.1 playback the unit packs options for virtual 6.1 and 7.1. I, like many, hope the industry doesn't go this way. WARNING- RUN ON SENTENCE. It is overkill and hard to incorporate into a room tastefully, but then I never thought people would be willing to walk around with a cellphone plugged in their ear- what do I know? There is an admitted problem with Voice Sync. I know this statement has already lost some of you- "What is Voice Sync?" Rest assured Voice Sync can be adjusted for. I am not worried about the heat it operates at. This demonstrates the unit is dissipating energy like it is designed. There is limited power. If your listening room is larger then 20 by 20 then a more powerful Onkyo model is a better choice. Having said all that, once you familiarize yourself with the Onkyo 705 it is incredible because I, like everyone else, want it all.
It has about every kind of hook up you will need any time soon. The sound is very good when watching movies. It seems to run a little hot but I have it in a kinda small space. When I added a small cooling fan, heat did not seem to be a problem. The remote is nice as it has lots of buttons, gota love that. I bought it as I did my homework and Onkyo seemed to have the most bang for the buck. I looked at the SR605 and I did not like it as it changed all the HD video from 1080i to 720p. I paid more to get 1080i on my TV so I thought I needed to pay more to get it on my receiver too. Overall I like it very much and I have been very impressed with it. I have had no problems with it at all. I think I bought the right unit for my system. It goes well with my Samsung LNT4071 LCD TV. I think I will get many years of enjoyment out of it. Great unit !!!!!
3 HDMI inputs, THX Certified, Easy to setup, Some reviews said that it should upconvert to 1080P some not, not matter what have a good source and the picture is perfect.
and this thing is really tough to get setup. The problem lies not with the receiver, that seems fine. The problem is that you have to know what you're doing in order to get the most out of the technology. Speaker setup not too bad, but getting the cable box (hdmi compliant), the TV (not hdmi capable), the DVD, the CD player etc all synched and working correctly is honestly beyond me. I'm going to be getting some professional help in here to get this thing setup and have someone walk me through it. What I can tell you is that the pure audio and the dolby digital with the cable box sounds fantastic. The manual speaker setup is a breeze and very intuitive. The remote looks like it could control the NASA shuttle, but it's also pretty straight forward. I'm saving to buy a 1080p LCD flat screen w/hdmi, and once I got that, I think this whole thing will be rockin, but for now I have a toshiba projection HD TV that requires component hookup, and it's not taking anywhere near full advantage of what this bruiser of a receiver is capable of.
awesome! this receiver has redefined my home stereo to a higher level from analog A/V to digital HD-HDMI 1080p and THX sound effects. it has solved a lot of issues for me like why my surround speakers could hardly put out any sounds. i have to use 3 remote controls to select the input, the TV resolution and the 480P video signal shows up with pixelations on my 1080 TV. with the upconversion feature of this receiver, i can watch my regular TV channels to a HD quality and now i've begun to appreciate and enjoy what Dolby digital/THX 7.1 surround sounds should be. best of all for the price i paid, it makes this receiver a heaven-sent for me. The only downside i can think of is that it makes me lazy to go to work since i'd rather relax on my recliner and enJOY the cinema-ambience with all the digital/THX sound effects and HD-TV in my own living room. I highly recommend this receiver!
