I have had this Audio Visual Receiver for about 6 weeks with heavy use and have had zero problems.

The HDMI switching has worked quite well although it could be faster, I am using it to switch between a cable box and a HD DVD player out to a projector. Since it only has two HDMI inputs, one more input would be nice but really is not an issue for me.

It does have a lot of features and a learning curve to go with them, however the documentation is acceptable and can be navigated easily once you learn the nomenclature. It is ready for 7.1 sound when it becomes available so that makes it somewhat future proof. Overall no buyers regret, I expect to many years of enjoyment from it.

  Great Sound

I like this reciever. It really gave an added dimention to my TV sound.
I do have one problem though. I am a cable subscriber with a HD Box, with HDMI out put to my TV. Non HD chanels look great but HD chanels over load the upscaling circuits. After about 5 minutes of watching the picture distorts and then goes out totaly. I now use component cables and forget about upscaling to HD

It accomodate all signals: DVD, Cable HD, Cable regular, Jukebox DVD/CD, VCR. All go thru the receiver to Toshiba ColorStream HD 1 via a component connection. Brings all HD signals up from 440 pi to 780 pi. This is not the fault of the receiver since it accommodates full 1080 pi. However, the Toshiba is an older model and can only accept a component connection at 440 pi which the Onkyo sends to it at 770 pi. Not 1080 but darn good.

Excellent equipment, very good factory support, right price. This product should be an easy setup for the surround sound system that I have. I am removing an old Sony Receiver and installing this Onkyo.

  Great amp for the price

First HDMI pass through AV Receiver I've bought, wanted to simplify the cabling requirements. Works great in that capacity, have connected a PS3 and a HD DTV receiver to it and a single HDMI cable from the Onkyo to my 42" 1080p LCD, leaving one HMDI input free on the TV. Sound is awesome, tons of DSP sound fields, still trying to optimize settings for my room :) Also Audyssey set up for speaker level is very nice and connections via HDMI are as simple as can be. My only caveat is that the receiver needs to be on to pass through signals via HDMI; i.e. you cannot watch DTV, play a game, or watch a movie with the amp off or in standby, it doesn't pass the signal. I may actually swap back and use both HMDI inputs from the PS3 and DTV box to the TV and a TOSLINK from the TV to the amp so I can watch TV without the stereo being on, still debating that. Overall very happy, just be aware that it doesn't pass HDMI 1.3 signals when it's off or in standby...least that I've been able to figure out!

Onkyo TX SR605 7.1 channel Receiver

This unit replaced an older Onkyo unit which has served me well. This new unit produces great sound. Set up is fairly straight forward. The remote control is the first I have ever received that actually operates my other components. Have it matched to a Hitachi 42" plasma. Still getting familiar with some aspects of the unit but once you get the basics down the rest is easy. The automatic speaker set up is a breeze and works well. Onkyo has made a great product in this receiver. It does all I was looking for and MORE!

this receiver will still be ahead of its time 3 years from now. able to handle full bandwith hd and blueray audio formats which are not even available yet! high power barely begins to discribe the ability of this receiver. the audessy microphone auto adjust your speakers to the characteristics of your area. absolutely onkyo buyer for life.

HDMI Cable box users beware!!! Disappointed with Onkyo

From the get go, the Onkyo TX605 SR 7.1 receiver was giving me troubles
Didn't like the fact it only had 2 HDMI input slots, then was unable to get any video capabilities with HDMI cable box from Time Warner Cable(Samsung)
Called Onkyo 5 times for assistance and kept getting different solutions, albeit nothing worked totally. I had to totally forego using my cable box via the receiver and put an HDMI cable directly from the cable box to the TV and bypass the receiver totally. I hooked up a Toshiba HD DVD player to the receiver and honestly don't see or hear anything that spectacular. I went from an older Onkyo receiver to this upgrade(low end of the higher end receivers, and thankfully didn't waste my money on the higher end receiver because that too would have been incompatible with my cable box) (not HDCP compliant)
I am highly disappointed with my purchase and all the hype is just that, HYPE. You can literally die from improvements and today I am so sick from all this electronic mumbo jumbo. I should have just stuck with what I had. I thought I was missing something, but realized I wasn't.
Take all your Blu Rays, HD TV's, DVD players and even HDMI cable boxes and HDMI cables and put them where the sun don't shine. Onkyo never alerted the consumer that their HDMI cable box may not work or be compatible with the receiver. It mentions it in the user manual AFTER the fact. Shame on them. I even researched many receivers before buying this one and no where did they even mention this on their website. Even CNET didn't mention this could be a problem.
Total waste of money.
Stick to the basics, you will be much happier and saner.

  Great Reciever for the money
Review created: 01/29/08

Albeit a bit difficult to setup initially as my inputs were spread out all over the place, I eventually got it done well. One of the few caveats of this receiver was finding the hdmi menu option. Once I found that it went well. Speaker calibration was easy as anything--just plug in the mic and press enter.

Excellent product, will buy onkyo again.
