  A great classic!
Review created: 05/21/08

This movie was a little slow in the beginning, but as in all great movies, all things tie in together in the end! Great movie about the history of the Jewish mob! Loved it!

Once Upon a Time in America (theatrical release, 1984)

Very few movies have moved me like this one. The performances, the music, and the scenery are all the stuff dreams are made of. It is a masterpiece. My favorite scene...the young boy eating the icing off a cupcake in the stairwell of an apt block...such underplayed sensuality, it's unforgettable. Don't miss this timeless jewel.

This movie was recommended by a family member. I was told that it is an excellent movie. I have not viewed the movie yet, I am saving it for a day when I am bored and have nothing to do.

  Leone's best

I'll start by saying this: Buy this movie. Don't think about it, just buy it. It's that good. If you want more:

Sergio Leone is one of the best directors the world has ever seen, and I believe this is his best movie. It is fully restored to the version that got a 15 minute standing ovation at Cannes. At 3 hours and 45 minutes, it is certainly an epic. It tells the story of a group of gangsters over 50 years through a non-linear series of flashbacks. Doubtlessly an American classic.

Once Upon a Time in America- Extended Version

I saw this version once a few years ago, and really thought it was so superior to the version that was available at the video store, I really wanted my own copy. The verson containing the narration was extremely interesting, since they talked about what it took to film those tenement scenes.

The music in this movie is so haunting and ads such emotion to the film, I can play the DVD and know what is happening without evein watching the picture.

This movie, as it was originally shot by Sergio Leone was a masterpiece.

Sergio Leone Masterpiece: 1984's Once Upon a Time in America
Review created: 10/09/02
by: tbrown -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
cast, direction, plot

Cons:
none

Director Sergio Leone's final film has been critiqued and debated-over since its release in 1984. Once Upon a Time in America is a multi-faceted piece, featuring a stellar cast. Taken from a novel by Harry Grey, the story chronicles the rise and fall of a group of Jewish gangsters who are friends as children and grow up pursuing lives of crime together during the Prohibition era in New York. Robert De Niro stars as David "Noodles" Aaronson, a complex man who, though brutal and murderous throughout his life, is primarily driven by his love for a girl from his childhood. Since his childhood,...

A great film that is unpalatable to many, for understandable reasons
Review created: 10/27/06
by: Stephen_Murray-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
sets, music, visual compositions

Cons:
demands patience, work (thought), and a strong stomach

Sergio Leone's final film (1983) "Once Upon a Time in America" is a film that polarizes viewers. Many of those who love cinema love it. Although it is a "genre picture" (species: gangster film), many of those looking for "popcorn movies" with heroes clearly distinguished from villains and easily digestible plots hate it. There are a number of aspects I don't like about it, and I'm not sure that it is a good movie, but I think that it is a great film. Getting through the first 15 minutes is a challenge. They are very, very violent and more than a little confusing. Hours later, there is some...

Pros:
Leone's Direction, Script, Cinematography, Look, Editing, Score, & Cast notably de Niro & Woods.

Cons:
None Though its Length & Graphic Sex & Violence Aren't for Everyone.

The name of Italian director Sergio Leone is an iconic one in cinema. Whether it's the westerns he made with the Man-with-No-Name Trilogy of A Fistful of Dollars/For a Few Dollars More/The Good, the Bad,

  Elegy of Childhood Memories
Review created: 06/22/03
by: mashimaru -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Great acting, beautiful direction, superb score

Cons:
Flawed plot, four hours long

I ve loved this movie since I was a child. I was about 12, going through my so-called Taxi Driver phase, hunting down every De Niro movie I could get my hands on, (hey, I even sat through Jacknife) and discovered the truncated version of Once Upon a Time in America on TV. Although the studio-release version I saw then was infamously panned as a one of the worst travesties of marring a director s vision, the sepia-toned images were still very beautiful and compelling. I wanted to see more. At some point, the network began to air the director s cut of the movie (which involves flash-backs and...

  An Invitation from Mr. Bailey
Review created: 02/03/04
by: sadgit -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Excellent direction and characters, evokes the beauty of violence and pain

Cons:
four hours long, violent and vulgar content

A forewarning: this is a violent and vulgar review of a violent and vulgar film. Sergio Leone's classic gangster masterpiece "Once Upon a Time in America" takes us on an epic biographical voyage of the life of a Jewish Gangster named Noodles (played by Robert DeNiro). From his impoverished childhood in the ghetto of New York in the 1920's, during which he was part of a ratpack, and using his remarkable street smarts to gradually make ends meet in black market jobs and form Mafia connections. Through his adult life as a vicious gangster during the prohibition era, and finally his older years...
