I bought this phone to replace my POS Razr (cingular compatable version). After going through 3 Razr's with much dissappointment (each lasted less than 2 months then broke), I went back to Nokia. Overall I am happy with this phone after the 2 months or so I have had it. I really like the fact that it has a recorder on the phone and you can record voices, etc. and then use them as ringtones. The camera is eay to use and seems to take decent quality pics for a phone.
All in all the phone is pretty good.
The only thing I can think of that I'm not surper happy with is the durability of the plastic body on the phone. It seems thin and easy to break - we'll see. Also the phone doesn't open up to as large of an angle as the Razr did so it makes it harder to hold between your neck and ear if you are trying to do other things wile talking. But, the speakerphone is loud enough to put it down and continue the conversation in this case.

*EDIT* As of December 2006 (a month after writing this 1st review) my phone screens died. Yes - both of them. The large inside screen as well as the smaller screen on the outside. About 3 weeks after that happend the phone turned off one day, never to be turned on again. I tried charging it for hours and it would never boot up again.
This very well could be because I bought it off an idividual here (eBay), and not in a store, but who knows. It could have done the same thing if I bought it in a store. I would have been able to return it if I bought it in a store though...
I have changed the rating to average from good because of this.

  Nokia 6102i: one Luddite's view...
Review created: 07/28/06

Disclaimer: Technical types will not find this review useful.

Chief complaint: Voice Quality so poor as to be unintelligible much of the time.

Details: My Nework :Cingular (used to be known as AT&T)- My calling range: S.F. Bay area.

On my Nokia 6102i, All the voices have an oscillating, underwater quality, and often an underlay of static as well. It's so bad, I avoid using the phone. I was forced into switching after my analog phone finally died. I 'd assumed reception depends more on the network than the device, but I don't really know. I DO KNOW that I enjoyed perfectly clear reception with my old Nokia model using the SAME provider I still use... Looking for a new phone now. Meanwhile, at least there's no chance of any overages. It takes only seconds to say "I'll have to call you back on a land line."

Since I really only use it as a telephone, I'm not qualified to judge the bells and whistles. I'll just mention that straight out of the box, it seemed easier to find myself in the "Cingular Mall," (where they sell ring tones, etc.), than to find and set up features I would have used most, (and already pay for) such as the speaker phone and speed and voice dialing. But I might have been able to fix this using a nifty application which allows you to program your own SHORTCUTS into the menu.

This was my first time using a camera phone. Among its drawbacks; it's hard to see your subject in the screen (no viewfinder)-especially in sunlight. And you can't download photos except over the internet (for a fee.) It won't replace my digital camera, but I've found that any gadget that makes it possible (easy, in fact) to turn grandchildren into screensavers is one I don't want to be without!

  Love this phone
Review created: 03/31/08

I am not a reaaly big texter or talker but I did find myself "playing" with all of the features on this phone. The things that you can do with the pics you take are fun and I enjoy putting different graphics and pics I my emails. My kids and grandkids are getting a kick out of me joining the "real" world.

my nokia 6102i cell i purchased from ebay
Review created: 03/05/08
by:

i originally had one which i got from my company for free with a plan, which was regularly $249.00 and i "loved it",when the speaker broke, i contacted ebay, as this phone is not the newest phone out there. I now turn my phone off at night to preserve it, as i never did this before. I also wrap it in plastic and carry it in my pocket so no lint gets into the phone to ruin it. I love it very much and because my contract was over and i could have gotten another brand new phone with a new contract, but i wanted this particular phone. i am very happy!!!!

  Versatile Phone
Review created: 03/01/08

I purchased this phone new on Ebay to replace a Samsung SGH-497.
This phone has camera-video capability and bluetooth. Since I don't have a bluetooth computer, I purchased a CA-42 serial cable on Ebay for about $5 to use with the Nokia 6102i.

The phone takes fun little 640x480 pictures. I like being able to download the pictures without incurring charges from my service provider using the CA-42 cable and Nokia PC Suite software; the latest version is available free from Nokia.com. To get the software to "see" the phone, you have to go to Settings...Manage Connections...Serial(CA-42)...and then pick the correct COM Port number.

I find the video to be useless. It's low quality.
Ringtones are easy change using the cable and any suitable midi file you want to use--again no need to incur charges from the service provider.

One annoying problem with this flip phone is that the keys are easily activated when the phone is closed. There is an option to lock the keys.

The Samsung never had this problem and I never had to lock the keys.

In conclusion, I like being able to take a quick little photo wherever I have my phone. I like being able to transfer the photo to my computer for free. I like being able to use any midi file for a ring tone for free.

The Samsung is a fine basic phone that did what it did fine and no more.

The Nokia 6102i phone has more features, the most important being able to configure the phone using the Nokia software, CA-42 cable, and my computer.

I love everything about this lil phone. I'm in the dark about high tech things and this is SO easy to operate & understand. I have had a cell phone for only a yr and had to replace the original 6102i(due to son). I cant think of a thing I didnt like so I went with the nokia 6102i again instead of a fancier waste of money &time for me :) . the Ms'lee

We are an AT&T authorized agent, with many customers in very rural areas. We have been in the phone business since 1989 & seen cell phones since back when the power output for signal strength was more than twice what it is today. Unfortunately many of the new feature rich phones made by LG & Samsung do not get the reception in rural areas that many of the phones made by Motorola,Sony-Ericsson & Nokia do. AT&T and most of the other carriers are lowering the transfer rate by installing their firmware so they can adjust signal strength to 5.6kbs transfer rate; less than half of what the manufacturers are building the phones to do. So we look for phones with the best signal strength & the ability to adjust them to deliver all the reception they are capable of. The Nokia 6102i is one of these phones that does give better than average reception, which is what our customers need. We have found Ebay one of the best places to look for what we need at a fair price.

I liked the fact that the phone was about a third of the price for a new one. But when I received the phone it did not work. Took it to the Cingular store to have it checked out and they said it would not work(new battery...etc...). I own several of these phones and one was dropped so I decided to try EBay. Funny how ebay will let someone sell something they say will work and it's broke but when you try to sell something you say doesn't work or is just a collectible, they won't let you sell it!!! I hope this helps anyone looking for information.
Regards,
Jeff

  Good basic camera phone
Review created: 09/18/07

I've had this phone for about 3 months, and my 3 gripes are:
1. It doesn't open up to as wide of an angle as some flip-phones I've had before.
2. You can't assign personalized ringtones for different callers.
3. It doesn't have predictive text for text messaging.

Overall though, it's a very good phone. The camera is not super quality, but is good enough. It's not as sturdy as some previous Nokia models, but it's not as flimsy as it feels when you first open it up. The only reason I'm planning on getting rid of mine is because I'm fed up with AT&T's GoPhone plans, and they want me to pay a $500 deposit to get a contract plan.

This phone did not work out very well for me. The button on the side where you turn the volume up, was rusty and would not work to turn the volume up, which left the phone basically unusable, because you can not hear your phone call. I will not get this phone again.

  Good Phone

I have already owned one of these phones, and am bidding on another one. I needed money when I sold the last one. My mom has one, and a friend had one. My mom has had hers forever and she loves it. That's why she won't sell it to me.
This is a great phone that has good reception. I have NEVER had reception problems with ANY Nokia phone. I can't say that about Motorola or Samsung.

I have had many, many phones (being a cell phone junkie) and I always go back to this one.
There are only two drawbacks to this phone, which have already been addressed previously.
Yes, the sound quality isn't perfect, but it is good. Also the top antennae cover comes off. The Nokia 6102 I had previously never fell apart, but my friend's did. That was understandable. She just threw it around all the time.
Most definitely, this is the best phone I have ever had.

  Flimsy Phone
Review created: 08/09/07
by:

While I agree that this phone has excellent reception, the plastic on it is just flimsy. I got 4 of these free on a family plan with Cingular. Both my husband's phone and mine chipped the plastic in exactly the same spot -- right in front of the antennae, which allows the entire top of the phone and antennae to come off at the slightest rub. My husband's antennae came off in his pocket and fell out, so basically now his phone is useless. I am just trying to be really careful with mine in the meantime. I am debating buying another one of these because of the good reception, but, take my word for it, this is not a phone for those with a clutzy side. I had a Samsung for two years before this. I had this phone less than 2 months.

I think the Nokia 6102i is a good phone. It seems to be durable, It takes clear pictures, and it has good reception. The main thing I do not like about it however, is that when the lock keys lock, you have to bevery fast at unlocking them. This takes a bit of getting used to.And until you do, you will try to click the two buttons, only to find you have to start all over. The best bet, use both hands, put one finger on the one button and get ready to push the other. Other than that it is a good phone. It hold a charge for a few days even!!

  Great rfeatures, terrible quality
Review created: 06/15/07

I like it because it has great reception, blue tooth, and light. The problem arises with quality. Cheap plastic case. The antenae cover has come off more times than I can count. After 4 months the first one I had the screen went blank like one of the reviewers above. They gave me a replacement phone, probably refurbed, and now, just under a year later, that phone has screen problems, no backlighting most of the time. Of course, this one isn't under warranty since they go by the date of the original phone!
Buyer beware.

Easy to use, lightweight and does not drop calls like Motorola V557 my husband has. I was able to set up the phone the way I wanted it and not the way it came from the factory. I was able to put on the "GO TO" menu all the things I access often. i.e., Alarm clock, calendar, camera, meeting, etc. One of the best Nokia phones I have had and I have only had Nokia phones. My husband has a Motorola V557 and it is worthless. It drops calls all the time and he has had nothing but trouble with it...it is his second V557. Was have had to replace it now and he is looking into the Nokia 6102i like mine.

Yes some great features, but no memory!

Yes this phone has some cool stuff in it, like a camera etc, but it is not worth the money people are paying on ebay. the major setback of the phone is that you have barely any memory on the phone. According to the specs this phone is to have 4.2MB of flash memory (but it doesnt)and so far neither Nokia or Cingular Customer Service can figure out the missing memory mystery. Put a couple ringtones on the phone and a screen pops up telling you that something needs to be deleted. The phone is also made of very cheap materials, which makes it easy to scratch, and break off of one little drop. I recommend you to buy a different phone that is the same price but a whole lot better because believ me there are a whole lot better phones than this one for the same price.

good phone but not as sturdy as a samsung
Review created: 01/16/07
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

i like that it's blue tooth enabled. i NEED the bluetooth headset since i am on the phone more than i am off it! i had a samsung prior to this and dropped it in the water either in the sink, fell out of my pocket into a puddle, or fell into the toilet out of my coat pocket, six times and it still worked after two years until i upgraded to this. i dropped this in a puddle a month ago and it just stopped working last week to my surprise. i was unhappy about that but i did love the features on this phone. the camera was super easy to use that my kids took pics with it. the volume goes louder than any of the other phones i have had in the past which includes the speaker phone is loud and crystal clear. i loved the blue tooth definitely. my friend got a motorola of somesort from cingular and it was difficult to program and this was easy to program and all features were easy to use. i don't do gaming so i don't know about that feature but i did do the mobile email and check my email while on vacation and that was great to do. i'd get it if i were you, it's worth it.
