Outside of my KJV Bible our 1967 reprint of Noah Websters 1828 Dictionary is, to us, one of the top three books every American and/or Christian should own. Everyone needs to understand the meanings of the words we use everyday! So much the more, do we need clarity of words not so commonly used but rich in meaning. Our family uses our Websters 1828 before any other dictionary or online resource.
I purchased this dictionary to help me with defining words in the Bible and so far I have not been real disappointed. The dictionary provides good solid definitions as well as good examples of the words in context. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is searching for a dictionary for similar reasons.
I have used this dictionary for years and enjoyed it so much I ordered them for my adult children and grandchildren. This is a fabulous, historical item, much needed in this day of re-defining and re-writing truth.
A good reference book, it deffinatly puts the English language of that time into perspective. Overall this book may spend more time on my shelf than I would have thought.
I can't say too much about this dictionary, as of yet, as I've only had it a short while. What I can say is that I like it for it's archaic definitions. There are a lot of words out there that are no longer used in everyday language, yet are still out there. They need to be defined as there are still valuable books out there that were written using words that have either changed meaning, or simply been abandoned. Some of the newer dictionaries either don't define them or list them as archaic. I have been in search of an older dictionary for quite some time as they writters of these books appreciated words and knowledge. I never knew the word 'conversation' to mean a lifestyle, I only knew it to mean speach between people. So when reading this word in my bible, there was something missing in the context of the passage. I am not one that believes you should have to be some great schoolar to have to retranslate from the original tongue the scriptures or any other book for that matter. You just need a good dictionary to be able to understand the words as written. The 1828 Noah Webster dictionary of the English language is an excellent resource. A worthy study aid for any serious student of the great works of literature; be it the bible or shakespeare.
This is absolutely THE classic dictionary that every family should have. Noah Webster was a Godly man who compiled this work in 1828 -- the first truly American dictionary. He gives complete definitions, with examples from the Bible, to fully explain the true meaning of each word. Just compare his definition of terms like, "marriage", "education", "sin", and "law" to today's modern definitions. The modern dictionaries impart a secular worldview, as opposed to Webster's 1828 work which clearly demonstrates a Biblical worldview. My family uses our dictionary on a regular basis, and I am glad that my children are learning the true meaning of the words in our language. We all should have a Webster's 1828 Dictionary on our shelves.
No home should be without this classic dictionary. If you want the original, true meaning of a definition, you really need this dictionary. Next to my Bible, I count this as critical for indepth study of any kind.
