Thsi is one amazing lens if you like doing close-up, macro photography. I live on property and am able to take absolutely breathtaking photos of insects, flowers and plants that are as clear as it gets. AF works great, just an absolute pleasure to use.
I purchased this lens for the macro feature; I needed it for extreme closeups. But I found that it makes an excellent portrait lens. That, plus the fact that it is razor sharp, makes it one of my favorites.
I wanted a macro lens, and I bought one it works well and it is what I wanted. It was my fault for not reading the fine print for the item I purchased and the price paid. It did not come with the original box or papers - bad me - would have been nice to mention that in the sales pitch as I did a buy it now. The lens is great but it came packed in a 99 cent store bag and foam peanuts. Kinda cheesy packing for a Nikon, maybe a KMart disposable camera could come in that and no one would care but with quality I expect quality and service (and a box would have been nice with the original packing), but like I said, I did not read the fine print, so anyone, read these people very very closely.
This is one hell of a lens! It is one of the sharpest lenses that I have used in my 30 years in photography. For macro work, I recommend focusing manually, or set the auto focus on Auto focus (S). For portraits its wonderful, just be careful to close down the f-stop, otherwise the the depth of field is very narrow (f/2.8).
As many of you know, this lens will not work in auto-focus mode on a D40x. It does not have the onboard autofocus motor necessary. Also, the D40x requires you to lock the lens at minimmum aperture. But have no fear, this enables the camera to control the aperture easily in both automatic and manual shooting modes, a fact not clearly stated in the lens instructions or other camera manuals I've seen. The D40x's shutter will not operate unless the lock ever is engaged.
As expected, though, is the lens' ability to gather light and achieve a razor-sharp focus, manual or otherwise! Depth of field control is quite flexible. A tripod is recommended at high magnification, but camera shake is less than expected. The Vibration Reduction feature on the other AF lenses is handy, but not essential. For general purpose, non-action and close-up photography, this lens represents a very high value. No D40 or D40x owner should look any further, unless they just want to spend much more $$$ for marginal improvement. Quite a wise investment!
I recommend manual control, or aperture priority shooting for best results. This lens can provide hours of productive fun and superior performance.
This is a must for all hobbist or pro's!! i personally like this better than the 105mm so I can get closer to my work( flower parts and slugish moving bugs) Well worth the avg. price of 300.00, look smart and you will find them even cheaper!!
I bought the lens a few weeks ago & have been able to shoot some fantastic closeups that were very difficult & time consuming before. I had used a 18-55 before & was finally able to get a few nice shots after too many attempts. It's hard to get a bad shot with the 60mm macro if you take your time & use a tripod. The 100 macro seemed to have less of a depth of focus than the 60. The autofocus works well despite the small objects I'm after. I've been shooting bugs, pieces of wood, plants, & berries much easier since the purchase. Top caliber lens!
Sharp and quick with nice bokeh, this lens is exactly what a 60mm macro should be. I also have a 105mm Nikon Macro lens which I prefer but not for reasons of defficiency. Buy it and start shooting great close ups. Nice value too!
I borrowed this lens from a friend of mine for some close-up shots of petrified tree cross-sections. The lens performed magnificently in moderate natural lighting and the resulting images were clear and sharp. The Nikon 60mm f/2.8D also serves as a great portrait lens for those people who don't mind getting a little closer to their subjects.
Succinctly stated, this is versatile macro lens at a price that won't force you to break the bank!
I bought this lens b/c I wanted to get a start in macro photography. It's a great lens, good for portraits and it does have a good focusing distance when you get real close but I have found that the 105mm that nikon makes would be the better lens for real macro photography (as I was soon told after I bought it by a fellow photographer). I would reccomend it to anyone wanting a good closeup lens for starters.
I bought it based on description. I am familiar with Nikon products and this provided just the right amount of information and the auction was quick and easy
