Nikon ups the ante - an entry level dSLR with 10.2MP

Strengths: Very nice value for the feature set, gorgeous 2.5" LCD screen, Auto-Flash Off exposure program, Nikon takes their simplest dSLR (the D40) and adds 10.2MP resolution and 3fps!

Cons: Only fully compatible with AF-S lenses, no top LCD, no second command wheel

Like the D40, the D40x is designed to capture the "entry-level" dSLR user and folks migrating from point and shoot cameras. The D40x does a nice job introducing aspiring photographers into the dSLR world. It is powerful enough that it will allow most camera users new to dSLR photography to grow into the features it has. But the D40 can still be used as a super P&S - just put it in P or A mode and start shooting away! I particularly like the Auto-Flash Off feature. Instead of forcing the consumer to fumble with menus to disable the flash (for when you're in a church or museum, for example), this automatic exposure program is an easy one step process.

I continue to be impressed by how Nikon designs its products. Unlike other camera companies, Nikon does not cripple its lower end products by hardwiring limits to high end components. It assembles the best components it has to come up with a complete camera to meet a particular price point. For example, all of Nikon's dSLR cameras today have 2.5" LCDs from their most expensive to their entry level dSLR. Also, the D40x shares the D80's 10.2MP resolution and matches the D80's 3 frames per second performance. Nice.

So why would you buy the D40x instead of the D40? For the higher resolution (10.2MP vs 6.1MP), higher frame rate (3fps vs 2.5fps) and lower starting ISO (100 vs 200). That's it! If you crop your photos a lot, the D40x is what you want. Otherwise, the D40 should suit you just fine.

What do you give up by not going up to the D80? The D80's top LCD, main LCD cover, second command wheel, flash commander mode, depth of field preview button, high speed flash sync, less focus areas, continuous AF engine, and on-demand viewfinder gridlines. Also, only AF-S lenses will have all functions work with the D40x while all AF lenses will work with the D80. Will you miss these features of the D80 by going to a D40x? It depends on the photographer. Ninety percent of photographers will be perfectly happy with the D40x while more advanced/serious photographers will want the D80 or more.

Lots to love about the D40x. Nikon's image quality, as expected, shines through. And ergonomics are top notch. The D40x is Nikon's smallest and lightest dSLR but it manages to feel substantial and solidly built. I would highly recommend this camera. Good luck!

The 10 Megapixel Nikon D40x is targeted for those who want a relatively compact and light camera yet having most of the important SLR features. I would also recommend you to also test the D50/D70s/D80 first before deciding to buy the D40x. There are some limitation with the D40x which shouldn't bother most people. Once you understand its limitation, thex D40x is a potent and exciting photography machine

D40x powers on instantly and take pictures with no shutter lag which are the major advantages of a DSLR over a point and shoot camera. With 3 frames per second you can capture movement progress in sports. Also great to photograph your family or child (child mode). The D40 is a great all around camera.

Some notable new features:
1. Auto (no flash) mode.
2. In camera editing capability such as black and white, sepia etc
3. 10.2 Megapixel sensor. enough to print larger than 13 X 19 Inch.
4. 3 frames per second

To date, D40/D40x is the smallest and lightest among all the Nikon DSLR. I believe that choosing a camera that fits comfortably with your hands is important. Therefore, I recommend people to test the camera before buying

About the 18-55mm II AF-S kit lens: A good lens producing sharp photos (though not a very fast lens). Also decent for close-up/macro photography.

Lens compatibility: Notice that with D40/D40x, autofocus function will not work for non AF-S/AF-I lens. If you already have non AF-S Nikon lenses and want a backup or replacement camera, you will be better off buying D50, D70s or D80. If you buy the D40x, it will be convenient to stick with AF-S type lenses.

Image quality of the D40x is very good which is #1 factor that I look for in a digital camera.

Here are the pros and cons of the D40x in my opinion:

Pros:
1. Nice out of the camera result picture quality
2. 10.2 Megapixel sensor
3. Compact size and light weight
4. Large and bright 2.5 inch LCD
5. 3 frames per second
6. B/W, Sepia, several more in-camera editing features.
7. Instant power on, fast autofocus and no shutter lag
8. Noise is acceptable at high ISO settings. Auto ISO settings available.
9. Great battery life (500+ on a single charge. 1000+ if flash is not used).
10. Auto (flash off) mode available

Cons:
1. No direct button to change QUAL, WB and ISO settings
2. Grip comfortably but might be a bit too small for some people
3. No top LCD and no front command dial
4. Autofocus will not work with non AF-S or non AF-I lenses
5. No AF/MF switch
6. Only 3 autofocus point
7. ISO start at 100 which is slower than the D40's 200 ISO
8. No night landscape mode in pre-programmed settings
9. 1/200 flash sync
10. No depth-of-field preview button

Comparing D40x with the D40. I personally prefer the D40 over the D40x. If you do a lot of cropping and print larger than 13 X 19 inch then it might make sense to get the D40x, otherwise use that $200 (price difference) to invest in SB-400 flash or better/more versatile lens (such as upgrading the kit lens to 18-70mm or 18-200mm VR or add the 55-200mm VR zoom lens).

In conclusion, the D40x is perfect for those who want high quality pictures, more control (than a P&S camera), and have a DSLR experience (instant power on and no shutter lag). And unless you are shooting sports/actions professionaly (which faster focusing & frames per second & larger memory buffer might be needed), the D40x is pretty much all you will need.

Happy Photographing!

  I Love This Camera

This is a great camera for a great price. I love it and I'd suggest it to anyone who wants a camera that's better than a point and shoot, but doesn't want to make a career out of photography (ie, they aren't willing to mortgage their home for a new camera and lenses).

I decided to buy this camera after test-driving a Canon Digital Rebel. This shoots higher quality pictures at about half the price. The only down side is that the focusing is a bit slower than the Rebel, and since I'm primarily taking photos of my new baby, there's been a few times that I've missed a smile because the lens was in the middle of adjusting (although that's really more my fault than the camera's since I wasn't prepared).

Speaking of babies, the D40x has a great preset feature: Child Mode. I don't use it very often because I don't really like using the flash at all (I prefer totally natural lighting), but it's a great feature that my wife uses all the time. She doesn't really know a thing about photography and still manages to snap amazing pictures with this preset. It's got a softer flash and focus that really brings out the best in children without hurting their eyes. My son is still a little surprised every time the camera goes off, but he's not shocked into crying, which makes this a great setting.

And yes, it's true that 10.2 megapixels is a lot. And you'll read a lot of reviews saying "unless you plan on doing a lot of cropping, this is too much." I don't do a TON of cropping, but let me tell you, when I do, these extra megapixels come in very handy. VERY HANDY. There's an old film saying, "you can't use what you don't shoot." And for the megapixel metaphor, "you can't zoom in on what's pixelated." To those of us who don't have another $500 to drop on a good telephoto lens, those megapixels are really important when taking a picture of something a little further away. Sure, cropping is not the best photography technique, but for those of us who are just photo hobbiests, it's a pretty nice feature.

I'm still learning all the functionality of this camera, but the basics are really easy to pick up. I was taking great photos from the moment I took it out of the box. And for anyone who buys it, be sure to check out Nikon's website because they've got a great video tutorial that gives a great overview of all less commonly used features. It takes a little while to get through it, but you'll be glad when you really learn the camera and begin taking excellent pictures.

I was going to take a foreign trip so I looked for light compact and powerful high-end DSLR camera. I've reviewed tens of models and decided Nikon D40X is the best choice for that price.
Unfortunately I haven't received it, because of fraudulent/incompetent seller - barclaysphoto. They just didn't ship it out at all. So I can't tell definitely
whether Nikon D40X as great camera as its description on web.
Thank to PayPal, I have received my money back at least.

Having been a Nikon film guy for over 35 years I really was nervous about making the jump to digital but this little sweetheart made me a covert. This is so easy to use that my 8 year old son is using in with ease. A perfect camera for the average family photographer to the more advanced. Flip on auto if you like and just shoot to your hearts content. The other nice feature is the interchangeable lens for the nikon film line. Nothing bad I can say. As usual Nikon has done it again. And as the price drops it just gets better. Do yourself a favor and BUY IT!

Wonderful Camera for All Skill Levels
Review created: 05/20/08

This camera can be as easy to use as a point and shoot or you can manually adjust settings for the more experienced. The quality of the photos is incredible. The ability to shoot up to 3 photos per second up to 100 consecutive shots makes it so easy to get those fantastic shots that you could be easily missed with other cameras. In camera editing features reduce or eliminate the need for a computer. The only thing I wasn't expecting (mainly because I didn't do enough research) was that you have to use the viewfinder to take the picture, there is no preview image on the LCD screen. That is not a very big downside though since there is less shaking when the camera is braced on your forehead in addition to your hands. This camera is also very comfortable to hold with plenty of room for both hands without accidentally pushing buttons.

I would highly recommend this camera to pretty much anyone old enough to assume the responsibility of caring for it. Get better pictures than you can from a traditional point and shoot with the same ease of use. It's a lightweight camera weighing in at just over a pound and very much worth the money spent for all the amazing memories you will be able to capture.

It is a very good camera. It takes great pictures for everyday use. It does good with sports photography, and outdoor pictures. I have also used the Canon Rebel XTi and I would have to say it is comparable, but I like the canon a little bit more. Overall, it is a great camera.

I was in the market for a Professional SLR Digital camera and the Nikon was one of the hihghest rated cameras available. Product is easy to use and gives professional results right out of the box. Product and related accesories purchased were all in excellent condition(Like New) and the prices through E-Bay made them even more affordable then regular retail.Would highly recommend the Nikon D40X to anyone, battery life is incredible and again the quality and ease of use is fantastic.

I purchased a Nikon d40x kit packaged with the camera, a 18-50mm lens, a telephoto lens, wide angle lens, a 2GB memory card, tabletop tripod, full standing tripod, hard carrying case, soft carrying case, lens cleaning kit, and polarized filters for the camera. (There may be more, I forget) The company said the product was completely new, and it was! This was my first big ebay purchase, and I would gladly do business with them again. I had to get expidited shipping to get the camera to me in 3 days. The customer service was great and they answered all my questions effectively. I had no problems with them at all, and got my camera right on time! Everything was excellently packaged, and works great! I shot a wedding with my camera two days after it was sent to me, so it was definitely worth the money!!

Thanks!! I love my camera!!

This is a great camera for me. I have a new baby on the way and wanted to be able to take profesional quality pictures. I wanted a camera that I could grow into, but not be ovewhelmed with. In full auto the d40x is truley point and shoot. It will go full manual and everything in between. My only word of caution is...Think about the size. Any slr setup is going to be big.

I love this camera for the ease of use and the great pictures it takes! I dislike the case it came with but i can get over that. The camera overall exceeded my expectations. I am thoroughly pleased! I am in the process of figuring out all that it is capable of doing and i am enjoying learning new things as I go along. The weight of it feels good...not too bulky or hard to handle. The clarity of the pictures taken is fantastic. Great camera!

As a novice hobby photographer, this camera is perfect for me. It offers all of the features that I might need (actually more than I will ever use), flexibility in camera settings and lens selection, and has a high level of capabilities, such as 10 megapixel photo size. A professional would probably want a higher end model, but for me, this camera is great.
