The Nikon 28-70mm f2.8 is a soild build lens deisnged for professional use. It is uber sharp when apeature is closed down to F4 or smaller, a bit soft at F2.8

AF-s and ED is Nikon's best to put up. Ensures very fast auto-focus performance and highly saturated images.

I use it to shoot general portraits in studio and for weddings/parties, along with a 17-35mm f2.8 for group shots or closer apporch. It's a perfect combination.

77mm filter size may at first seems a bit large. But most other Nikon AF-s F2.8 lenses use same filter size (17-35mm AFs, 70-200mm VR AFs and 80-200mm AFs) so you actually saves money on mutiple filters with different thread size.

Good used price on eBay, and a highly recommended lens.

  Great portrait lens
Review created: 07/10/08

I have used this lens for studio portraits for a while. And this is a great lens. Not as good as Nikon 24-70mm, but still great and $400-500 cheaper. It takes quite an effort to have a real life shoot where difference is detectable. Color is great as well. I sold 28-70 to get 17-55, and now I switched back...

I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THIS LENS

THIS IS AN AWSOME LENS AND I DON'T KNOW HOW I EVER GOT BY WITHOUT IT. CLEAR CRISP PHOTOS. GREAT LOW LIGHT NO FLASH LENS AND THAT 2.8 SHORT DEPTH OF FIELD ALLOWS FOR SOME AWSOME PORTRAITS.

This is an excellent low light lens. Optics are fantastic and the pictures from the lens are second to none. I use it for indoor sports shots, mainly basketball, and the shots taken from under basket are surperb. I would recommend the lens to anyone.

A fatastic lens, perfect for the city

A beautiful, solid piece of machinery. Tack sharp, and a perfect range of focal lengths for street work: portrait to semi-wide. Feels great: it's heavy, but is so solid I don't mind. The focus ring could have more definition; I have to think about it when I feel for it. But it's a slight problem, relative to the wonder of shooting with it. I've a 12-24 and a 70-300, but this has become my principal lens.

This lens I bought was like new. The owner didn't know how to use it properly. After reading the other reviews I can see they don't know how to use the lens either. Proficiency is achieved though practice and Nikon has free on-line training courses available to make you a pro in no time. I used this lens to do some of my finest work shooting estate sales, auto sales, commercial advertising and personal portraits for women. It has amazing color saturation and contrast superior to any competitor lens. The camera body should be a D200 or D2X to achieve maximum performance. I found by using a SB800 and bounce flash at 60 degrees I use 2.8 constantly with results that are unachievable by cannon's top of the line equipment costing 5 to 6 times more. Adobe software and proper lens calibration using the D2X will make this the best lens in your bag. I love the 72mm filters and I make custom ones for portraits to soften the surrounding area bring the subject to a bright and crisp target. I airbrush my filters to achieve a custom look that can't be done to the smaller 62 and 52mm round filters. I suggest you buy 4" X 4" holder for drop in filters w/ 77mm, 62mm, and 52mm adapters this will give you the best lenses available for all of your needs with just one set. This will save you space and cost, you can use them on any brand of camera latter so you never buy filters over again. This lens is great for doing family portraits at 28mm getting everyone in the shot easily even if the people are quite large. The focus is fast at less than 1 second allowing to catch action shots missed by other cameras. Nikon used the best parts and lens to make this lens almost in destructible. It is versatile enough that you can you can use this lens as a stand alone lens wide angle to telephoto. I love this lens and I own the 17-35mm f/2.8 for landscape pictures with these two lens you have a great start, then buy the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR and you have an unbeatable arsenal of lenses to tackle any photo possible. You can do professional quality shots that will be better than most pro shooters with a bag full of every lens. I try to make $300-$600 thousand dollars per year doing photo shoots, it was hard to get that kind of money at first. Now I can do it working five days a week. This lens is a work horse and it has never let me down, when it is time for a new lens the 28-70mm sells on ebay for 70 percent of the initial cost making this lens the best buy on the market today, I get all of my lenses and cameras cleaned and calibrated once every two years and they all look and operate like new, I have had only 6 repairs in twenty two years and I own every lens that Nikon makes and 4 different camera bodies (2)D2X,(1)D200,(1)D40X. I prefer this setup so that I don't change a lens while I work in the field. Dollar for dollar Nikon cameras and lenses are the finest value for top of the line equipment. With owning the 17-35mm and the 28-70mm and the 70-200mm VR f/2.8 lenses and I suggest the new DX 18-200mm f4-5.6 ED-IF D AF-S VRII lens and you have the best setup money can buy. With a D200 and these four lenses will do 99.9% of any and all photos to give you professional results every shot! Buy used equipment if you can't afford new, the life of this equipment is approximately a million shots or more so don't fear the price you won't be disappointed or have any regrets. Get started now and enjoy a lifetime of photography! Cost is about a penny a day, so get started now!

  Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8 D-AFS AF Lens

This is an all-around excellent lens, without a doubt one of Nikon's finest zooms. I shoot film, so there may be some differences when shooting digital.

The build quality is excellent, all metal and designed to handle serious use.

The optics are extremely sharp through most of the f-stop range, though things get a little soft wide open (below f/4). Honestly, it's hard to see any real quality issues even opened up to f/2.8, and if you're shooting anything that requires more than the minimal DoF, you're not going to be at f/2.8 very often anyway.
That being said, it's extremely handy to have a constant f/2.8 aperture, for use in low-light situations, and just in general. Composing a photo with a "fast" lens like this one is a joy, since there is so much light transmitted to the viewfinder. It's also nice for really isolating your subjects from the background.

Autofocus is very fast and accurate thanks to the AF-S system. If you've never experienced a Nikon AF-S lens, give one a shot. Autofocus just snaps right to the subject, almost instantly. Really nice.

Finally, the 28-70mm zoom range is extremely versatile. You can cover pretty much anything in the "general shooting" category. I use this as my walking-around lens, meaning it is always on my camera. Great for street photography, and it handles landscape situations pretty well too.
For digital, the focal length will be different. Something like 42-105mm with a 1.5x crop factor. I don't shoot digital, so I don't know how useful this lens is in that respect.

Now, the cons.
This thing isn't nicknamed "The Beast" for nothing. It weighs around 2 lbs. on its own. That may not sound like much, but you will notice it after a few hours of constant shooting.
It is also a BIG lens. 77mm front element, and with the hood on it's almost twice as long as the product specs state.

The other con, 77mm filters. These can get kind of pricey, but you can always use step down rings to adapt the big filters to your lesser lenses.

Again, this is an excellent lens. You can get some pretty good prices used, and it is well worth the money. This is a workhorse lens, and will most likely be your all-the-time, walking around choice.

Pick one up and enjoy!

This is a pretty good lens in a average shape.
The lens looks like been to a bitted up shape but still in a functional condition.

I still able to use to for most of the photo shoots.
The seller sold it in a lower price which caught my attendion on it as a secondary lens.
