Joni Mitchell's Return, More Than Just an Ordinary Night Ride Home

Pros:
versatile vocals and lyrics that cover wide territory

Cons:
a couple of dead tracks

The Artist No longer is she the fresh-faced kid dwarfed by her guitar on the Woodstock stage; that was thirty years ago, you know. No longer is that velvet voice tinged with girlish tones so evident in Ladies of the Canyon or Court and Spark; it's grown somehow harder, with a sharper edge (perhaps decades of smoking is taking its toll?). No longer are her lyrics the innocence of "Chelsea Morning" and "Big Yellow Taxi" or the frivolity of "Twisted"; they've begun to take on an air of cynicism and perhaps just a trace of world-weary sorrow. Pros:
Every track is solid and interesting, independent of all the others.

Cons:

Pros:
lyrics and music offer a starry-eyed view of life

Cons:
a couple of lyrically forthright songs

It quickly took its place in my heart as one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard, and perhaps the most optimistic pop-music album since John Lennon's Imagine. In spite of its undertow of eeriness--particularly the song "Cherokee Louise," documenting a girl's mental and sexual abuse by her stepfather--it's mostly a nostalgia-tinged, heartfelt piece of shimmering melodies and thoughtful, intelligent lyrics. The...
