A True Master Piece For It's Time:NiGHTS Into Dreams
Review created: 03/07/08
by:

In NiGHTS, the player flies around a particular linear route through the Mare. The gameplay as Nights is not completely 3D: players can only fly in the 2D plane of the screen, with their actual motion through the level determined by the automatic camera angle at that point in the Mare. The player has only a limited period available before Nights falls to the ground and turns back into Claris or Elliot, and each collision with an enemy subtracts five seconds from the time remaining.

Various acrobatic maneuvers can be performed, including the "Paraloop", whereby flying around in a complete circle causes any items within the loop to be attracted towards Nights. The game features a combo system known as "Linking" whereby actions such as collecting items and flying through rings are worth more points when performed in quick succession than they are individually.

After completing the four Mares, the player is transported to Nightmare to confront one of Wizeman's Nightmarens. The player has two minutes to defeat the boss, with the time taken contributing to the player's total score for that Dream. After each boss is defeated, a player can play a level again, and choose via the menu which boss to fight.

Graphics: 5/5 for the time it was released, NiGHTS had some great graphics which showed the true power of the Sega Saturn.
Music:5/5 The music is enchanting and the soundtrack is a must have for video game OST lovers.
Gameplay:4.5/5 to fully enjoy NiGHTS, you would need to get the Sega Saturn 3D controller which makes it easyer to move around.Except that, the characters are easy to handle.
Story:5/5 Original Story and characters which created a new mascot for SEGA.
Originality:5/5 should I repeat myself?^-^
Basically, it's a must have for Saturn Fans or for retro gamers around the world as this game appeals to any age group and is easy to play. Enjoy!!!

  Nights is truly a dream
Review created: 12/02/07
by:

I first played Nights into Dreams on a rented Sega Saturn back when it first came out. I never forgot it. More than 10 years later I bought an old Sega Saturn on ebay, partly to play this game. It was beautiful, and I bought the special controller to go with it. It truly looked like something out of a dream and it really felt like I was flying. The graphics didn't look as fancy as I remember, after years of playing on a Playstation 2, but the feeling was still there: A powerful sense of carefree bliss.

Nights into Dreams is one of my favorite games for Sega Saturn. I couldn't stop playing it when we rented it from Blockbuster. This was the first game of its kind where your character can fly. Claris and Elliot are the characters who call upon Nights to tackle their nightmares. The graphics are great and the music is decent too(Soft Museum was a rather catchy tune). You have to get all A's to get the best results when you beat the game. Some of the bosses were a little difficult at first(Clawz and Jackal mainly; Wizeman was a pain at times too). The rest were a breeze. This game will be enjoyed by many. It is highly sought after and can cost you some serious cash on eBay. Lucky for me, I already had it before the game reached such a high demand on here. I bought mine Brand New from the Electronics Boutique for $15. The Christmas Nights sampler is also available; however, you will have to cough up a lot of $$$$ unless you get the Japanese version(as low as $5 used). If you don't own this game, be sure to pick it up. You'll be glad you did. Enjoy.

  Nice challenging aerial game

In Nights into Dreams, you fly around and are pretty much invincible until you run out of time and revert to a normal child. The thing that's cool about the game is how it gives the illusion of being 3d but it is really 2d. It really looks nice and plays well; the controls aren't as problematic as I was afraid it would be without the analog controller.

  Nights Into Dreams

Great and fabulous platform game. Started to show what the 3d generation of games was all about. It is a very solid game from the Sonic Team. This is a must have for your Saturn collection. Make sure your clock is set on your Saturn as you will see the weather change with the seasons. ( Which is cool just to fool the system to thinking its summer when its winter )

  Refreshingly Imaginative

"NiGHTS: Into Dreams" is the SEGA Saturn's classic "almost-perfect" masterpiece. You'll be hard pressed to find another game with such a fantastic atmosphere. Much like the classic Mario series, NiGHTS is about having fun... regardless of your age.

Gameplay revolves around collecting chips within a time-limit and then returning to a marker and then starting the process again. Movement is mostly in a 2D field with you controlling the free-flying main character; you're limited to one button for a dash attack and two buttons to make NiGHTS preform acrobatics, as well as NiGHTS "vacuum" attack that occurs when you fly in a circle quickly enough. This might seem simple at first, but dashing through a level trying to collect chips in succession to maintain a combo can get very difficult very quickly.

The bosses in NiGHTS are very creative, though they do follow pretty set patterns. Figure it out and they fall very quickly; the faster you topple them the more of a multiplier you get for your top score.

NiGHTS was also one of Sonic Team's first forays into playing around with AI that the player could raise. Depending on how you treat the tiny little Nightopians in the levels of the game the music and creatures will change. It's not an indepth part of the game, but it can certainly be entertaining to see the Nightopian/Nightmare hyrbid you breeded on accident.

The biggest drawback to "NiGHTS: Intro Dreams" is simply that it's very short. 7 stages in all. Even with the desire to max out your high score and simply freely explore the levels despite the time limit that's not very much. What's there is excellent, but there's no denying the shortness of the game.

Still, definately a classic.

NiGHTs Into Dreams: - Never Give Up On Your Dreams!
Review created: 12/17/07
by: jeremy1456-- a member of Epinions and Lead in Games

Pros:
Addictive Arcade Style Gameplay, It's Got Immeasureable Amounts of Sega Magic

Cons:
Bad Graphics, Can Wreck Havoc On Your Thumbs

The Sega Saturn may have been a big joke to most video game fans, but there are a small number of us that truly appreciate it. One of the many mistakes Sega made with handling this console was the absence of a brand new, completely 3-D Sonic the Hedgehog game - by far and away their mainline franchise. What we got though, is something I consider vastly better than any of our hedgehog's outings, something much more personal - NiGHTs Into Dreams. Like Sonic, the flying jester was the brainchild of Yuji Naka, but unlike Sega's hedgehog, NiGHTs was a far more original, and dare I say compelling...

  Dreamy
Review created: 01/27/07

Pros:
A simple, beautiful game

Cons:
Can be slightly pricy these days

Possibly one of the biggest failings of the Saturn was that it lacked a true game featuring Sega s mascot Sonic the Hedgehog. There was no clear platforming game with character as the Nintendo 64 had with the evergreen mascot vehicle Super Mario 64 or even the mascot-less Sony with the third-party Crash Bandicoot. At least, that s how things appeared on the surface. While Sonic himself didn t make a proper appearance on the machine, his role restricted to a compilation and a racing game, the folks behind him, Sonic Team, released another outstandingly simple yet enchantingly addictive game...

  Oh the humanity of Nights!
Review created: 01/12/05
by: dogeymon -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Stunning graphics, smooth gameplay, great soundtrack, and a very moving experience.

Cons:
It eventually ends. ;)

You can never critisize Nintendo when standing in the presence of a huge Nintendo veteran, because they're the kind of people that see Nintendo for their genius. Because, yes, yes, there's something more to Nintendo's games like Mario and such than just a great game. There's a magical experience about them. And I think that Sega has the same magic as much (and I think beyond) what Nintendo does. Mario, a plumber who lives in a land of mushrooms and can touch a star, become invincible: that's magical. But Nights into Dreams goes to a whole other magical level and touches every emotion in the...

NiGHTS is brilliant. Think "Psychedelic 3D Flying Sonic the Hedgehog".
Review created: 10/17/04
by: jble -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Amazing gameplay and artwork.

Cons:
none.

NiGHTS into dreams was created by the Sonic Team, and it is a joy, with incredible artwork and gameplay that stand up very well eight years later. It was up against Mario 64 on the n64 and Crash Bandicoot on the PlayStation, and there weren't enough great games for the Saturn to be successful in the US, so many people haven't ever seen it... but this game alone is worth buying a Saturn for. You absolutely need the 3d analog sega saturn controller (it was designed for, and is often packaged with NiGHTS) in order to play this game - it's painful and difficult to play this with the digital...
