I bought it for the great blues song "Gimme A Reason," but other songs are growing on me. The album is largely about positive thinking and respecting the earth.
This is one of those CD's that every single song is good. I have it downloaded on all my computers and a cd of it in my care. My 7 year old loves listening to and this is the kind of music that delivers a great message. This Cd is so spiritual with out that over bearing religious note. I love it.
I bought this CD solely for the one cut, (Give Me One Reason). Of course I listened to the whole CD, but this is the only one I listen to on a regular basis. The CD & the case were in good condition, if a little faded.
It is exactly what my brother in law wanted said he had been looking for it for about 10 years and could not find it so I orded it in about 10 minutes on ebay.
Tracy Chapman has always been a bit too mellow for my tastes, but I decided to give this album a try...I was not disappointed. Her unique vocal style and her musical craftmanship is very unique, soothing and talented. You can feel power, talent and raw emotion seeping from this woman. She is a good, talented female singer who has something important to say in each and every one of her songs by both, her music and her lyrics. Why can't we have more intelligent and talented female musicians like Tracy today?
Tracy Chapman is a smooth voiced woman with soul at the roots of her music. I liked the way she tells the story with words and music that gets you in the mood to sway and jive .
I like the fact that a cd I've been looking for and not able to find in stores I was able to find on EBay. I really don't have anything bad to say about it, shipping was very fast, and it was in perfact shape thanks again
If you like everything else that Tracy has done, you'll like this CD. If variety is the spice of life, this album defines bland. Her extreme positions are repeated over & over until they are numbing, not thought-provoking. I like an artist the tackles controversy, opposes the majority, and gives them hell, but Tracy, at best, gives them heck. Let's have some music here, not repetitive recitations. On the plus side, she has an engaging personality that comes across in her performance. Her sincerity is refreshing, if not persuasive. If she gets some production help to be more musical, she could be dynamite.
New Beginning by Tracy Chapman was a good showcase of her soulful sound. There's deep hurtin in those words of hers. Anyway - I like the tune "Give me on reason". Overall - nice job.

Tracy Chapman: She Will Tell It Like It Is [crashing the E' W/O]

Pros: Social consciousness without preaching, mellow tunes, passionate lyrics
Cons: Could move listener to tears with some very depressing lyrics
Without angst and without abrasive lyrics, Tracy Chapman sings of harsh realities - and even more tragic situations. Although this album, New Beginnings does not suffocate its listener with high-handed moral instruction, nor does it sing of these hardships to ask for pity. Chapman merely sings to enlighten. Quiet hope weaves its way throughout these songs - even in the most dire situations. As the title implies, all of these songs speak of average people at turning points in their lives - making a new beginning, naturally, but some do not succeed. Stories of discovering the true nature of a...

Pros: A musical choice for any mood or time frame.
Cons: No cons about it!
Heaven s here on earth is the first song on this CD and it is by far one of the most inspirational and relaxing songs I have ever heard in my life! How true she is when she say s If we have faith in humankind and respect for what is earthly and an unfaltering belief in peace and love and understanding this could be heaven here on earth . A statement maybe we all should take to heart and open our eyes to, after all not everyone is open to believing in a god or a heaven above, so why not open our eyes to what we see everyday? New Beginning is the second song on this CD and that is what...

Pros: Great music from beginning to end.
Cons: none
I have to tell you right off that I never really cared for Tracy Chapman. That was before my friend was playing New Beginnings, Chapman's 1995 CD release. The songs on this CD seem to have a depth that I've never heard with Chapman before. Sure her lyrics have always been right there, such as the song Fast Car but the music just quite didn't touch me in the same way. Now with the CD that's changed for me. Heaven's Here On Earth The first track on the CD sets the tone right off. Chapman's Signature voice along with acoustic and electric guitar and a powerful yet subtle drum score takes you...
