This movie was made about thirty years ago, but holds very true today. Its a story about simple values, such as honesty and integrity; and how easily they can be tossed aside. Most movies I rent, but this one is for my permanent collection.

This is a portrayal of how desperate the news networks can get for ratings. It has strong language. I think that it is a very honest look at the news media itself. It is very sad to see how far they will go for the sake of profit. I enjoyed it.

  Just simply a fun movie

Peter Finch plays the character Howard Beale who is a has been in the news programs and the management has decided that news is a loss to the bottom line. Faye Dunaway plays Diana Christensen who is a manager that removes all stops to get her way and is mainly concerned with the ratings. Robert Duvall is a axe man who is concerned with the bottom line. William Holden is Max Schumacher who values his friendship with Howard and works to make the team function in spite of the disfunction.
This potpourri of chacters makes for one of the best dark comedies I have watched. The fim was created back in the mid 70's and it was an Academy Award winner.
Beale is told he is going to be let go because of the low ratings, Diana tells Duvall she can make something out of the news program if she is granted carte blanche with running the show. Beals states he is going to kil himself on live TV in two weeks. The ratings soar and the watchers of the program behave like puppets to Beale. He becomes sensational.
This movie will tickle your funny bone and satisfy your desire for drama.
I enjoyed this movie back in the 70's and when I watched it again I felt the enjoyment again.

I'm Mad As Hell....The Quote That Makes The Movie W/O
Review created: 08/02/04

Pros:
Powerhouse performances, Brilliant script, Relevant topic

Cons:
Some content and characters a bit exaggerated

This is my entry into Epinions member dbcint's* The Quote That Makes The Movie W/O. The objective is to write a review of film in which there is a memorable quote that basically sums up the contents of the film. I chose for my entry, one of the most memorable movie quotes of all time, which I think continues to be relevant even today. When the movie Network was released in 1976, the Vietnam War had just ended, oil prices were rising, and there was a general feeling of disillusionment among the American population. I can see numerous parallels between that time period, and the one in which..

NETWORK: TV is bad for your eyes....no, really it is!
Review created: 12/08/04
by: cripper -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
One of the best satires ever written for the screen

Cons:
Some might say it is dated and too exaggerated

I was talking to my dad just the other day about what some of the most memorable screenplays of all-time are. Given that we were not allowed to talk about adapted screenplays, I found it very, very difficult to come up with screenplays that were original that stood out in my mind. The first film that came to mind was Casablanca, but I found it very hard to come up with any other film that had a great original screenplay. This is where Network comes in. Having just watched the film, it was the next film that came to mind. And because I realized I had not reviewed it yet, here is my take on...

Somethings that are old are new again--the themes here are
Review created: 02/16/07

Pros:
Story, satire, maturity, acting

Cons:
Speechifying and Dunaway's screaming gets pretty old.

No one gripes more about the wasteland of television (and when Network was released, there were only 4 major networks with smaller, typically UHF channels for larger localities) than the people who make it. Every profession has its nay-sayers, but television not only has them, they can (in a supreme irony) televise them. The plot is complex, so please bare with me. Howard Beale (Peter Finch) loses his mind on the air of the lowest rated evening news show on the fictional network UBS. At the beginning of the film, he says he is going to commit suicide on the air in two weeks. Naturally this...

Dark Comedy as Prophetic as the Bible - and as Horrific!
Review created: 03/23/06

Pros:
hilarious, poignant, surreal, prophetic

Cons:
outdated production values

I saw this film, back in 1976 when it was released, and couldn't believe my eyes. Never before had a movie struck me with such power and brilliance. Never before had I been hit right between the eyes by the anger and poetry of satire. Growing up in the seventies, with television as my nearly-constant companion, Network was one of the last great pieces of social commentary before the cynicism of Jaws became the innocence of Star Wars, and "social consciousness" beat a hasty retreat to fantasyland. By today's standards, the production values in Network are beyond outdated, as are some of its...

Network's UBS: the future home of Jerry Springer
Review created: 08/17/07
by: updateghost-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
Performances, story, direction.

Cons:
Monologues can grow old.

Sidney Lumet's Network (1977) is so skillfully crafted that its more dramatic scenes can sneak up on viewers and bite them in the ass -- hard. It is a satire on the American media but demands that its characters be taken seriously. The central person is Diana Christensen (Faye Dunaway) -- she's a heartless executive for UBS, with a drive for ratings so severe that her aptitude for love has all but disappeared. The station's news host, Howard Beale (Peter Finch), knows that he's about to be fired for his old age, so he announces that he will commit suicide in a week live, on the air. Beale...
