We think it's hard to fault the Netgear RP114 WebSafe Router. It's long since become old (End Of Life) technology, but look what it does!
* It's a capable router that has DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to automate the assignment of IP numbers to client computers and NAT (Network Address Translation) to help make client PCs safe from outsiders trying to get in. * It's connects to either a DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) or Cable modem to provide Internet connectivity. * It a four(4)-port switch for connecting client PCs and other Ethernet devices. (Turn off DHCP and it functions nicely as just a switch!) * It's consistently been available via ebay for years in the neighborhood of $15 to $25.
As an IT consulting firm we've tried to keep one or two around as cheap insurance to help us be ready for whatever comes up. Just the other day we turned off the DHCP setting in one and used it as a switch to temporarily get network PCs connected to the Internet via the one original connection in the office. And months ago when a SonicWall firewall failed, one of these units filled in nicely which 'extra' firewall software turned-on at each workstation.
So if you have one we'd suggest that you hang onto it, or maybe sell it to us! And if not consider picking one up for whatever you might need next. We have a clint with three PCs using an RP114 with a cable modem. They paid once to have it set up, and then NO ongoing monthly equipment fee for the cable company's multiple PC (rent-a-rooter) solution.
