Springsteen's Best Effort
Review created: 01/20/08

The simplicity of the music helps the songwriting shine through. All the great themes are here. Longing, revenge, anger, lust and all the human emotions are expressed in these deceptively simple songs. Stripped down to just guitar and vocals, we can appreciate the storyline on tracks like "Johnny 99" which was later covered by Johnny Cash. "Mansion on the Hill" and "Highway Patrol" are other favorites of mine. Great album!

Nebraska is his best work. This record has integrity character charm and it will be passed down from generation to generation unlike those radio hits. It never grows old to muscians writers actors and music buffs alike. God given talent is a rare comodity. I love this record.

GROWIN' UP SPRINGSTEEN VI: "there's just a meanness in this world"

Pros:
Lyrically stunning; stark, moody, and atmospheric.

Cons:
Musically, almost wholly unexciting.

First things first, then: ratings don't mean a thing. It's important that we hurdle this issue straightaway, because as i start this writing, i still haven't figured out whether Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska is a four-star album or a three-star album. It's not a five-star album, certainly - which is sad, because most of 'em up until Nebraska have been - but I'm sure I could justify giving it four. Then again, i could totally justify the three, and that's where the meaninglessness of ratings comes in: in a way, I think they should be optional, although I realize that for the practical purposes..

Pros:
The title track and "Atlantic City" meet the most basic requirements of entertainment.

Cons:
Everything else is a late night ride through Valiumville.

It's been forever since I last wrote a review, and I feel sorta strange re-emerging with a pan. Especially since everybody else who reviewed this album gave it four stars or more. But what the hell. Please understand that I'm essentially not a Bruce Springsteen fan to begin with. Oh sure, I like "Born To Run", "Hungry Heart", and a few of the other hits, but whenever I need a slice of American cheese, I almost always opt for Mellencamp. That probably has everything to do with my Indiana upbringing. What drew me to this album was a claim I once heard about "Nebraska" being a very "dark" album..

Pros:
Presents a different side of Springsteen.

Cons:
Not one.

In 1984, during his re-election campaign Ronald Reagan tried to co-opt Bruce Springsteen's Born In The USA as a campaign song. Reagan praised the song as exemplifying American Patriotism or something to that effect. Springsteen later commented that Regan and hadn't really listened closely to the song beyond the in-your-face chorus and commented, "I bet he's never heard Nebraska". Springsteen was probably right. Until The Ghost Of Tom Joad nearly thirteen years later, Nebraska was unlike any other album in the Springsteen catalog. It was an album that was almost totally acoustic, having been...

Pros:
One of Bruce s best
Cons:
It s gotten hard to find at least this side of the Atlantic
1982 s Nebraska comes in close second on my list of Bruce Springsteen s albums, after the gorgeous Born to run. Born in the U.S.A. Bruce s music occupies a very special place in my life. I still consider Born to run (1975) the best album I bought in America last summer. Now, as I keep running in my life, his music follows me, ever reminding me of my dreams, as each day brings me closer to their fulfillment. There s something genuinely special about Born to run, an album for tramps and dreamers, and the culmination of the early E Street Band musical prowess. That little album was also Bruce s..

Pros:
Every song is incredible.

Cons:
Don't expect any sax solos.

Funny how the majority sees only one side of a thing. Take Bruce Springsteen, for example. The man has released a swarm of albums over the past thirty years, but his biggest commercial successes came with his biggest sounds. Born To Run and Born In The U.S.A. were both big records with a big band, including three guitars, drums, bass, keyboard/piano, and saxaphone, not to mention Springsteen's powerfully loud screaming voice. But Nebraska, a modest and small record, was largely ignored by radio. And it happens to be Springsteen at his best. Once considered to be inseparable from the Reagan...
