If you like jazz this is a cd you need to try. Simply astaunding music. The album has only 4 songs, but they are all 14 minutes long. You will hear elements of funk, jazz, rock, metal, big band, fusion, etc. It can defenetly be labled as Prince's greatest musical achievement. A MASTERPIECE - every music enthusiast should try it.

Prince does JazzN.E.W.S. is prince doing jazz, with a little rock guitar thrown into the mix. There are better jazz albums and better rock guitar albums, but I give credit to Prince for trying something different. The man can surely play guitar, and maybe someday we will get that rock guitar album that Prince has talked about and "Chaos and Disorder" only hinted at.

Prince started out early with great lyrics like I wanna be the only one that makes you come . . . running ( I Wanna Be Your Lover , PRINCE, 1979) and Dig, if you will, the picture / Of you and I engaged in a kiss / The sweat of your body covers me ( When Doves Cry , PURPLE RAIN, 1984), and wound up with tripe like All she needs is just a little gratuity / She don t like no beef / She just loves me for me ( She Loves Me 4 Me , THE RAINBOW CHILDREN, 2002) and What was the real reason that Adam never left Eve ( The Greatest Romance Ever Sold , RAVE UN2 THE JOY FANTASTIC, 1999). I don't know what fans of Prince's more commercial 80's material will make of this album. Prince's style has matured greatly since Purple Rain. If his name wasn't on the cover, you'd never know that this was his record. N.E.W.S is easily one of his best albums to date. Here we have four 14:00 instrumentals named North, East, West and South, each flowing seamlessly from ambient and new age to jazz and rock and back again. And like everything Prince, it's funky as all hell. It's very hard to review an all-instrumental album - lyrics are what gives people a human connection to their music - but..

I have always wanted Prince to release a downright instrumental album, and N.E.W.S. satisfies that desire. He's done an instrumental track every now and then, before this album came along, but that's about it. N.E.W.S. is Prince doing what he likes to do best - just record and go. I'll be honest, I didn't much care for One Nite Alone, either the album version, but I liked the concert CD collection. Then, Xpectation was only released to NPG Music Club subscribers, and I wasn't subscribed to the club at the time, so I've only heard bits and pieces of that album. I had heard a bit of N.E.W.S....

This album embodies (not wholly) Prince's personality like the wind. He's ever changing and advertureous; as so is this album. If you are the type Prince fan that just can't seem to let go of the Little Red Corvette, then this may not be your thing, but for all others.... it's a new joint your ears must hear. To give you an idea of what to expect.... it's more on the lines of the Kamasutra album. And in case you aren't aware that's another album by Prince.
