Moulin Rouge is as good musically as it is visually

Who knew Ewan Mcgregor had a phenomenal voice until this movie or that Nicole Kidman could command the screen with something other than her beautiful eyes and long legs. This movie had great music, a phenomenal plot with many twists and turns, and a soundtrack that combined elements and songs in such a way that was entertaining and humorous. The costumes and cinematography will keep your mind going well past the drop of the curtain and the last time the words are uttered--the only thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return

This is a very interesting film with an interesting consept; Take a 1952 Oscar winner for best Picture, Throw everything out but the name (script and premis and all) Keep the Main character but change him from a sad old drunk to a wimsical merry elf, make him an insignificant suporting character and add a butt load of pop music--- Sounds awful, but your Wrong... This is one of the best films ever, just watch it and prove yourself wrong!!

  One Of The Great Ones
Review created: 01/01/07

I never thought that I would want to see this movie but now that I have I can't seem to stop wanting to see it over and over again. My Daughter told me that it was great and I now agree with her 100%, this is as good as the old Gene Kelly musicals and as you know Gene was the best. Ewan McGregor has a wonderful voice too and he looks so beautiful, the songs are great, not long and boreing just beautiful. I even bought the movie soundtrack to listen to because the songs just seem to stay with you long after the movie is over.

  Moulin WOW!
Review created: 11/04/06

The energy, the dancing, the singing, the decadence of Paris at the start of the century will catch you up. If you think too much about the sad reality of that life, you could get depressed, but watching John Leguizamo as Toulouse-Lautrec was grand. Since you knew the real person was only about 5 feet tall and John Leguizamo is 5' 8", you know he had to play this part on his knees! Ewan and Nichole singing together was great! This is the sad story of a beautiful girl who had to sell herself to live. Then she found someone who valued her and loved her as a human being, only to have cruel life bring her down at the end. The passion of that redeeming love is a memory to keep.

Moulin Rouge- you'll either love it, or hate it!

Moulin Rouge is a complex musical that by it's very nature is just not going to appeal to everyone. It is set in the early 1900's and pairs concepts from several previously done movies and plays (including one from Shakespeare) with music from the 1980's. The costumes, scenery and choreography are fabulous. The first 20 minutes or so of the storyline, however, is a mess- it moves VERY quickly and is VERY difficult to follow (it wasn't until I watched the movie a 2nd time that I even had a clue). BUT, if you can get past the intro what unfolds is a very romantic (and tragic) love story, set to fun music, that is absolutely HILARIOUS in parts (i.e. a comical dance set to Madonna's Like a Virgin). I'm not ashamed to say I even cried a bit at the end. My advice is give it a try- you'll either love it or hate it, but either way you'll have watched a very unique movie for today's standards.

I bought this movie because I absolutly love it. I like the expressiveness that this movie has. It also has a great movement to it, this movie is a lot of times full of energy and never really has any dull moments. I have been looking for this movie since I first saw it in the movie theatre.

Sex, Lust, Love, and Paris-The Moulin Rouge
Review created: 06/10/01
by: RobinLynn -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
story, actors, music, costumes,Paris

Cons:
none

It has been a long time since I have been so wonderfully surprised by a movie. Of course, I had to go see it since it took place in my favorite city in the world!! While recently in Paris, we stopped to take a photo opportunity in front of the famous Red Windmill . There we were, in the midst of scores of tourists, taking pictures in front of the night club on the sleazy street, surrounded by peep shows and strip clubs in Montmarte. But since we had been inundated by early press releases about the upcoming movie, we thought it would be fun to get a photo in front of the landmark. When we...

Ewan McGregor Is Prince Charming in Moulin Rouge
Review created: 06/01/01
by: kristinafh -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
WOW! Where has Ewan McGregor been all of my life?

Cons:
A little loud and busy at times, but that's just a small inconveinence.

Preamble Let's get this straight. I don't like musicals. Grease? Sure, it had its time and place. The Music Man? High school fodder for David Cassidy wannabees. And then there's Moulin Rouge. (Insert dramatic pause here). Either musicals have progressed significantly OR Baz Luhrmann has a great one on his hands. The End There are many of you that really want to see a movie but don't even want to read a full review until AFTER you've seen it. You want to experience it without anything being given away. I want you to see this movie therefore, I am moving "The End" up to the top :). This movie...

  Moulin Rouge! That's Entertainment.
Review created: 03/07/02
by: Vormancian -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Entertainment! McGregor and Kidman.

Cons:
A bit too much. Could have been put together better.

In the beginning we see a red curtain. In front of the red curtain we see the image of a man conducting the music we are hearing with what can only be described as reckless abandon. The curtain, the orchestra pit, and the flickering of the projection light all lead us to visions of the early days of Hollywood. Movies from the thirties and forties which had as their main objective simple entertainment. Movies that weren t even sure what movies were yet, and as in films of The Marx Brothers and such, films that had stage productions built into them because that s what entertainment was at the...

Moulin Rouge : A Love story and the Best movie of 2001

Pros:
The music, a great story, outstanding color schemes, and superb acting.

Cons:
none

"The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love, and to be loved in return." Words to live by, and a lesson that must be learned in the duration of the film Moulin Rouge . Baz Luhrmann took a step out into the unknown, and was given the money to make a musical centered around a night club in 1900's France. The premise of the film would be based around the music, and have characters that would go through all the stages of love. Having not directed a film since Romeo

Moulin Rouge: "The most important thing is to love... and be loved in return."
Review created: 02/16/02
by: mkp51 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Excellent acting, well done music, garishly entertaining.

Cons:
Overly simplistic story line.

With my somewhat... shall we say... conservative... tastes in movies and books, it came as somewhat of a surprise to me the other day that I would even consider sitting down and watching Moulin Rouge, much less buying it on DVD. Yet, that's exactly what I did. What came as even a bigger surprise to me is that I liked it. I liked it a lot. That's not to say that Moulin Rouge didn't take a bit of getting used to. Five minutes into the film and I felt my senses being bombarded with frenetic, over-the-top, somewhat hard to follow (and swallow) scenes. "Geez," I kept thinking to myself, "how much..
